Can't get Installation AAW to fire

Post by ddougan »

I'm playing the second mission in the GIUK Battleset (Gauntlet) as Nato.

The Soviet airfield ZXa at Banak will launch Mig23 Floggers which fly by the Narvik Installation. I've tried this scenario a number of times, and never once has the airfield launch any attack against them.

I have tried on the default 3/4 AAW Auto-Fire Range, and also at Optimum, as well as Surface SAM Fire Rate to Heavy, but to no avail. I've also checked that my air search radar is enabled (they can detect and track the Migs as they fly by, just never fire). The "Enable Air Intercepts" is ticked.

My naval ships will happily shoot at the incoming Migs - its just the ground installation which is not (and since their flight path takes them by Narvik, it would be nice to get a shot off at them before they make an attack on the convoy).

The SAMs and AA Shell count on the installation NEVER go down - so its not that I'm just missing animations or message log entries...

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug that someone else has experienced? I think it may be a bug, as I decided to also play this from the Soviet side. I fly my 6 Floggers in patrol over Narvik, (repeatedly) and none of them took any fire - so it seems the AI is not launching SAMs nor firing AA guns either!

Hi mate,

Ive played this one through before and the air defences at Narvik totally creamed the entire flight.

The only thing that rings a bell with me is that the air defences are Narvik are very short range SAMs and guns, so they wont be able to engage unless the MiG's fly directly over the port. Even then there is a chance that the SAMs and guns get caught by total surprise and do not have time to open up.

I think this was a deliberate design feature in the scenario.

This is just a heads up from what I have observed, I dont discount what you are saying in the slightest [:)]

I expect this is correct.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll give it a few more attempts as Soviets with a patrol directly over Narvik to see if I can shake up some return fire!

Here are the stats for Narvik from the Classic version of Harpoon.

1) RBS-70 missiles: 2.7 mile range, VL-L altitude. these might get your airplanes.

2) 20/80 guns: .8 mile range, L altitude. unlikely to get you.

3) 40/60 guns: 1.6 mile range, L-H altitude. This is the Bofors gun which was probably already obsolete at the scenario time

Victor, where are you getting those stats? Are they from the documentation or somewhere else? Just curious if you have some secret way to grab those stats.

Harpoon Classic Scenarios

I think that those values come from the "Harpoon Battlebook" by James DeGoey

fwiw I fired up the scen, drove the Floggers right over the base. 5 were shot down, turned for home and the fine Flogger was destroyed as well. So at least on my computer the air defenses are working fine (but they are indeed very short ranged).

Herman is correct.

The "Battlebook" is just loaded with data, such as what weapons and sensors and ammunition all the land bases have.

My copy was included in the Harpoon package I bought, lo these many years ago.
