Question/Plea

Post by terje439 »

Any chance there will be an option to click the different ship class abbreviation (like DD/DM/ML etc) and get a short briefing as to what that class is and does? I know most of you guys have this info learned by heart, but to new players not all those two letter combos make sense.

Just "click" the manual open .. there will be a set of pages that list all the classes and their functions.

hmmmm.... still be nice to have a built in 'dummy button' though. Kind of like the 'Civopedia' thing in the Civilization series (for those of us who have ever played anything other than WitP)

Goodaye,

I'll second (or third) this request. Sure you can flick through the manual but it's a big manual and having access to it within the game would be a great advantage.

Perhaps just a simple hot key that pops up a page listing all the abbreviations.

The interface - while functional - wouldn't win any awards for ease of use and anything that eases the information burden would be all to the good.

Y'know, I prepared an index for the WiTP manual when the game was released, and Matrix initially expressed some interest in appending it to the download package, but it never went anywhere. I have indexed both of my published books, so I have some experience in indexing: it requires judgment and planning, not just rote use of a word-processor's search function. I'd consider preparing an index for the AE manual, for no fee, if Matrix were still interested...

I think I will expand this a little by telling where my initial post came from.
Ok, I agrere that probably most people that are going to buy AE are the people that frequent these forums and know the game very well, however I feel that such a small thing would not be too hard to program/add to the game, and it will be (imo) a great help for new players.
I still scratch my head from time to time trying to remember which two letter combo will allow me to replenish mines and which will help me repair my ships.
So unless this is something that will add alot of programming (my programming skills are slightly above 0 (around 0.00001 or so[;)])) I feel this might be worth atleast to think about.

Anyway just my two cents on a great game.

Keep in mind that the list of good ideas is nearly infinite, while the number that can make it into the game are in the hundreds. And often something that seems simple could require a re-wire of the game engine. An indexed game manual may be less optimal than right-clicking your way to knowledge in-game, but it works and it's a definite improvement over what's available now.
