Hehe true, did not think about that, but this is not what I am after.
Hint: bullets vs tracers

Now I am guessing that the bullets and the tracers did not follow the same trajectory -- so that the tracers would encourage you to aim in the wrong direction.

Correct. The tracers and the bullets did not have the same weight, making you hit with the tracers but miss with your bullets.

ooo post #1k, guess this thread has indeed served my main purposes for starting it [:D]

A few ironic questions:

Q1: What was the name of the US Navy Command on Dec 7th 1941?
Q2: What was the name of Hitler's personal train on Dec 7th 1941?
Q3: Fighter planes would often load their guns so that one in aprox 5 bullets would be a tracer so that they could adjust their fire on sight, why was this a mistake?

Stalin conducted the Purges because he rightly feared his Generals. No purges and Stalin probably wouldn't have been alive or in charge in the Summer of 1941. The Soviet Citizenry believe that no Stalin and the war would have been lost in the first 6 months.

The soviet citizenry were "brainwashed". If they would have say otherwise Stalin would have send them to the Goulag. We will never know what could have happened, an interesting whatif.
Warspite1

Absolutely right - I remember reading one episode that sums up the cult of Stalin and how the "citizenry" perceived him. During the subjugation of the Kulaks and the resultant starvation - leading to canibalisation - in Ukraine, many Kulaks believed that if Stalin knew was what going on he would have stopped it........

Which French battleship served with the British Eastern/East Indies Fleet in WWII? - I thought Patrice might know that one..

Maybe an armed merchant ship disguised as unarmed. The 5-inch gun being smaller and easy to hide so the armed merchant is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Yes it would - but that was not the question [;)]. This was just one ship within a class

This Q has been bugging me all night, and I still have no answer [:@]
The 5 inch is not typical RN, more USN. And I know one of the RN cruisers took a hit at Malta (I believe it was Malta at least) and was repaired in the US. So I guess it is that cruiser that had her guns refitted as well, but her name?! #¤&%&!!!!

This General was awararded his countries highest award for valor in the face of the enemy. He was shot in the face and lost an eye in Africa. Lost a hand in France. The General was shot through the head without any lasting injury. Had other injuries in his hip, ear, leg and ankle. Wounded in action no less than 8 times. Survived when his airtransport was shot by enemy fighters killing his aide. Was later taken prisoner after his airplane had crashed due to engine failure. Made 5 attempts to flee imprisonment including a 8 days attempt on the run.

1) What is the name of the General.

2) What campaign did he later descibe as the dullest campaign he had been in?

-Orm

I know this is a difficult one so I add some more facts.

He is considered by many to be one of the most remarkable figures in British military history.
He recived all his wounds in WWI as well as the Victoria Cross. At the end of WWI he said "Frankly I had enjoyed the war..."
During the WWII campaign he considered dull he commanded "Mauriceforce".

Another question, the name or surname of a canadian-american fighting force. Yes, a brigade composed of american and canadian soldiers in the same force. The only to my limited knowledge to have existed in WW2.

A clue, it was a super-commando created in 1942 by the U.S. and Canadian armed forces. Any idea someone what was the name of this unit?

The Black Devils, this unit was a special secret force, even now I have difficulties finding something on them on the internet. They served in the Pacific then were recalled in Europe in 1944 for the Anzio landings. The germans called them "Schwartzen Teufels", hence Black Devils, because of their ability to pass unnoticed and the black they used to paint their faces. They were the first allied unit to enter Rome. They suffered a very high casuality rate.
