What a finish

Post by DAWUSS »

Earlier I was doing a matchup between the Ben Davis Giants and Warren Central Warriors in MFB. It was a snoozer for most of the game, up until the dramatic conclusion. Giants 7 Warriors 0, 3rd and 6, 0:09 (play clock was down to last seconds), Ben Davis possession, Warren Central has one timeout (so BD has to run a play). Handoff up the middle, BD fumbles, WC recovers, and returns it for a TD. The extra point is wide left.

Anyway, you can catch the real game 7pm eastern tonight on the WBDG webstream

Snapshots 1.

BD completion, WC QB Sweep (these kept biting BD on a frequent basis), and BD biting on the fake handoff to the FB

BD fumble return TD, BD on a pass, Warren Central getting a rare run up the middle for a good gain (most of their successful runs were to the outside), another QB Sweep

Warren Central stuffing the counter late in the game (first half they were consistently hammering away on the counter when they were running it), WC catch in triple coverage on 3rd down (catch was 1 yard short of a first), BD handoff mid 4th qtr, WC player on fumble return TD

Ben Davis continues postseason dominance with rout of Warren Central
By Michael Pointer
Posted: November 15, 2008

Little more than a month ago, this year's Ben Davis football team hardly looked like a group that would put its mark on the program's glorious history.

On Friday night, it looked like a group that just might be able to win a state championship.

Miles Wright rushed for 211 yards on 27 carries and scored three touchdowns and the Class 5A No. 10 Giants dominated the offensive and defensive fronts in a 45-23 regional victory at No. 9 Warren Central.

"That's what we've been doing the last five weeks, since the Lawrence North debacle (a 14-10 loss on Oct. 10), where we just played horrible and they whipped us," Ben Davis coach Mike Kirschner said.

"We just said we're going to come out and this is what we're going to do. We've moved some people around, but for the most part, we're relying on our size and our strength."

Ben Davis (10-3) snapped a nine-game losing streak to Warren Central (9-4) en route to winning the school's 14th regional title -- third-most in state history -- and the first since 2002. The Giants will play at top-ranked Center Grove in a semistate game next week.

"We're physical," Ben Davis standout defensive end Jordan Stepp said. "That's really what it comes down to. We fly to the ball on defense. We don't quit and we just hit. Something clicked in us after that Lawrence North game and we became a different team."

The next week, the Giants upset then-No. 1 Carmel 24-17 in the regular-season finale. They've outscored their four postseason opponents 150-61.

"I don't know what the difference is except they decided they wanted to be champions," Kirschner said. "And tonight, they are."

Warren Central's stellar running back duo of Eric Williams and George Cheesebourough combined for 257 yards in a 42-21 victory over Ben Davis on Sept. 12. They had just 144 yards Friday night, as Cheesebourough had a late 59-yard touchdown run after the game was out of reach.

Ben Davis' defense also scored two touchdowns on fumble recoveries. And offensively, Wright and his teammates were able to run between the tackles all night, thanks to some punishing blocks by the Giants' offensive line.

"We just wanted to come off the ball hard and use all our weightlifting to our advantage," Wright said.

Ben Davis took a 17-9 lead when Estaban Cortez kicked a 27-yard field goal on the final play of the first half. Warren received the second half kickoff but was forced to punt.

Ben Davis followed that up with a 13-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Wright's 8-yard touchdown run with 3:56 left in the third quarter.

"When we scored on that drive to start the half, I really think that took a lot of life out of them," Kirschner said.

Ben Davis' Isaiah Lewis returned a Warren Central fumble 12 yards early in the fourth quarter to make the score 31-9 on a soggy night.

"The rain feels great," a drenched Stepp said. "Everything feels amazing right now."

Ben Davis 14 3 7 21 -- 45
Warren Central 2 7 0 14 -- 23

BD -- Keith Suggs fumble recovery in end zone (Estaban Cortez kick)

BD -- Phillip Dudley 30 run (Cortez kick)

WC -- Safety, Ben Davis punter recovers bad snap in end zone

WC -- Derek Hart 1 run (Tommy Martin kick)

BD -- FG Cortez 27

BD -- Miles Wright 8 run (Cortez kick)

BD -- Isaiah Lewis 12 fumble return (Cortez kick)

BD -- Wright 2 run (Cortez kick)

WC -- Eric Williams 18 run (run failed)

BD -- Wright 46 run (Moises Vigueras kick)

WC -- George Cheesebourough 59 run (Cheeseborough run)
