Carrier Battle in the Aleutians

Post by Coach Z »

Well we had another carrier battle up in the Aleutians - August 23rd, 1942. My plan of moving on his flank and hiding the SHOKAKU worked. He admitted that he had no idea that I had 3 CVs up there. He thought maybe the ZUIKAKU, HIYO, and a bunch of the CVEs, but not another fleet carrier. Actually he thinks I had the HIRYU, not the SHOKAKU because of the Air Groups involved. I took of the SHOKAKU"s planes to train them in China and reloaded her eith the HIRYU's air group. Hell they've been sitting around and training since early June.
I was able to sink the HORNET, but wasted several strikes as an additional strike of 22 Vals went after the HORNET as she was disappearing beneath the sea. In the PM Phase a few Kates came in on the WASP, but they all missed! Oh what I would've given to put one 18" torpedo in to her side!
On my end I found the potential trade acceptable. I will probably lose the HOSHO now at 73 sys/84 flot; and the UNYO maybe in trouble 74/29 (but the fires have decreased to only 5). I still hope to save both the HITO and TAIYO who are in the 55/35 range. If I trade the HOSH and a CVE for the HORNET it'll be more then worth it!

Well it look the WASP & SARATOGA have retired for now. I will stay vigilent in case he tries to attack my CVEs who are beginning to straggle. Hopefully he will wait another day or two, which may allow my Bettys & Nells to factor in to things.

My Nells found some targets as Floyd moved a RCT in to position to unload at Adak Island. I figure they most also be bringing more supply for his Marines.

Down south near New Caledonia a BB the IDAHO was found escorting a large troop carrying convoy. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that he is heading for Koumac. I wonder how large a force he is bringing? I havent seen any part of the Americal Division since I destroyed a large part of it at Guadalcanal. He has to be bringing in at least one more division, but from where.....Australia? I guess we'll find out tomorrow, unles he is doing something really crazy like trying to invade Lunga or Gili Gili.

August 26th, 1942
His forces invade Koumac but only with elements of the Americal Infantry Division. His bombardments were mediocore, but my planes did not strike his transports nor his Battleships-which was very disappointing no Betty or Kate strikes. My CVLs were just north of Koumac yet didnt fly a single strike. Only a few of my Betty's at Luganville flew, and they went after a Minesweeper? Come on there are Aks & Aps all over the area loaded with troops, plus a pair of Battleships and we attack a Minesweeper?

Up north his Aks & Aps finished unloading at Adak Island and there were no strikes from my two Fleet Carriers. Actually there may have been one attempted because I did see 10 Vals with an unable to locate target message, but that would be less then half the available Vals on those carriers...plus what about the Kates? Only 12 out of 27 available Nells....[not counting the 9 damaged ones], at only 20% Naval Search I thought I get a # closer to 20 in the attack.

TURN NOTES
WOW I thought...and I after checking I realized I had...ordered those destroyers to bug out of Adak Island, but for some reason they decided to stay and get slaughtered....arrrggghh.

I really though with 50+ Bettys at Luganville, I get a couple of shots at his transports or Battleships....maybe tomorrow. Once more a Night Surface Action sees over 40 Long Lances fired and only 1 hit! (the other torpedo hit was a 21 incher). Dang it...I need more hits with my Long Lances...I mean we started at 8000 yards!
I really thought I'd just need the single division to drive that 'portion' of the Americal Division back in to the sea. I mean come on, he's unloading and got to have a high disruption....oh well once more something I can get right. But if he is unloading how does his AV get adjusted up?, while mine was cut in half?

My Air Raid at Imphal was horrible! My frontline fighters from decent squadrons couldn't hold their own against outnumbered British fighters!

Troops are reshuffling in China to deal with his threat on the Southern Fornt.

AUGUST 29th, 1942

Strange, but interesting turn, not sure who "won" that this turn. His subs got loks and made runs on the UNYO & ZUIKAKU and luckily neither scores a hit.
Very bummed by the 17 Betty's who could only score 1 hit against his AKs at Koumac; Floyd felt that the loss of his F4F's more then made up for it; I disagree.
He attacks in China north of Canton at 43, 40 ; and while he gets worse odds, he causes more casualties and takes less then last turns 1:1. Also in China several sentais of Army fighters choose not to fly an escort mission...I hope this is not starting again!

SEPTEMBER 1st 1942
Pakhoi falls.
Many raids in China and Burma fly w/o escorts.
Not sure if Floyd is pulling back his carriers in the North.

Post by Coach Z »

SEPTEMBER 2nd, 1942
Another day and again several escort missions in China & Burma do not fly. Is this some kind of known BUG? I mean all the Fighter sentais, datais and chutais have morales 90+ and fatigues <9.

I really hope that I can actually hit another Allied sub some time in the future with an ASW attack...it seems like its been a long time that an IJN depth charge got a direct hit.

As I reposition my forces to make another move in Australia, I can't help but think he's planning a counter somewhere himself.
I didn't think he'll continue to advance in the Aleutians after losing the Hornet. BUT I have spotted his carriers 12 hexes from Attu....within Betty/Nell torpedo range! I'd lose a good 20 Betty/Nell crews to sink another USN CV! Sounds harsh, but I think its a decent trade...especially if a bunch of USN CV trained pilots go down with the ship!
The Shokaku & Zuikaku are in position to cut off his escape and the Akagi & Kaga are advancing on his position. Perhaps I can put the squeeze on him again!

But back to his counter attack, I can't help but think he'll try something at Wake. He's been bombing regualrly and it will allow him to have a smalll measure of Land Based Air with his 4 Engine bombers. I can also see him trying for Makin, Tarawa, or one of those other small Japanese controlled islands in the Kwajalein region. Lastly he might try to sneak into Java thinking it is devoid of forces. Well it is a bit thin, but the Naval Guard Units there should delay him long enough for me to bring in reinforcements. Also my land based air there will make any invasion costly.

Catch a Carrier?

Post by Coach Z »

Floyd steamed hundreds of miles west of Adak Island before I spotted him again. The question is can I squeeze him between my 4 carriers and win?
Actually what I really want is for the 70 Betty's and Nells at Attu to slip a few fish into either the Wasp or the Saratoga! Unfortunately he seems to be staying 12+ hexes from both Attu & Kiska to prevent any ZERO's from being able to fly escort [smart ]

Arrrggghhh!! I lost the spot on his carriers again! Darn it! I'll spend another day or two hunting for them before I call off the search. So close, so close but yet so far. I really thought I had him.

In China it seems the same fighter groups that won't fly escort will fly sweeps. I guess we'll have to see what happens tomorrow. My forces have shifted to the south and will soon by pouring into the Canton region. He has "cutoff" Canton from the rest of China with a single corps, but I have a Tank Rgt in that hex already with a Mixed Brigade a day out.

For some reason my troops did not attack at Koumac, but perhaps it would be wiser to wait till he has made a failed assault or two. I'm not sure on this and will ponder it some more.

He keeps hitting Wake Island. I have to think that his next move will come against Wake or in the Tarawa/Makin region to give him a base to strike at Kwajalein. I may mount a small operation in this area myself just to try to maintain the majority of the initiative. I still maybe be able to hold on to Adak Island and I think I will be able to take Efate if I can stop his air transport missions (supply & reinforcements)

My lack of Prior Preperation has left me in a poor situation in China. If I had peaked at the pre-game Chinese setup I would have made Yenen a priority, but my naivity, stupidity, and perhaps a touch of arrogance kept me from doing that; so now I am paying the price throughout China!

Here's a view of Australia.
Floyd has withdrawn his troops towards Alice Springs. While part of wants to pursue and take Alice Springs, I feel he may be trying to draw me in farther then I planned to go. Plus I need to focus myself on taking Perth. I may advance to that crossroads hex (I love crossroads hexes) if he continues to withdraw.

September 4th, 1942

Good News - I've spotted the American Carriers again up near the Aleutians. I was shocked to find that they only moved about 9 hexes in two turns. He is probably trting to move slowly and carefully to avoid the range of my potential ZERO escorts for my Betty's & Nells on Attu. A Jake from my CS was able to fly and spot him by none of my carrier TF's reacted to move closer to him. So once more the squeeze is on; the AKAGI & KAGA will steam at Full Speed trying to catch the Wasp & Saratoga, while the SHOKAKU & ZUIKAKU will try to cut them off. I was able to supplement the Shokaku's air group with a carrier capable datai of A6M2's (80 experience) based at Ominato, unfortunately 2 pilots didn't make it, but I need those planes on the carriers. Better two good A6M2 pilots then the carrier-I hope. He also spotted and struck (although caused no damage) to my relief TF heading for Adak Island. Since the weather cleared up, I'll back them up and have them wait for a day or two.

Once again many of my strikes in Burma and China fly without escort. I check and I had ordered several sentais in the same hex as the bombers to fly escort, but once again they 'refuse'. My attack at Yenen was a mess and my attack at Ichang came too late. While I did lower the fort lkevels at both bases I am unmoved by their succes or lack there of. I will soon have a few brigades ready to add to the fray in the south as my troops march towards Canton. I think he will need a week (i.e. six more days) to break my siege of Ichang if I can get some air support for my Brigades holding out there.

I am puzzled why he has not attacked out of the beachhead at Koumac and why my troops refuse to attack into the beachhead at Koumac. Perhaps he was starled by the # of troops I had there (especially the Infantry Division). I am also waiting for him to try and push my troops at La Foa back; but perhaps the lack of air and naval support he has there is making him tenative. I was somewhat disappointed with my air raid at Efate.

On the Air Loses screen it was nice to see that a total of 16 B-17E's and 7 B-24D's were destroyed by his raid at Port Moresby. Things continue to progress in Oz. Troops continue to march towards Perth and a supporting TF is about to round the cape to shoot to Perth. I see he now has 5 units there, I wonder what units he marched there to replace the 13th Aussie Bge he marched north....perhaps I'll find another understrength Indian Division and a coastal gun/field arttilry unit.

September 5th, 1942

Looks like the American carriers ran at full speed towards Midway; if my intel and scouts are correct. I hope I am wrong but it seems like luck was with him till he wised up and ran! Noy sure what to do with the reinforcements for Adak Island; maybe I'll wait for some bad weather. I'd put some of my Betty's & Nells on Night attack, but I dont know if my subs have ever spotted his TF running to Adak from Dutch HArbor (although they must have gone thru those hexes!).

I expected him to shock or deliberate attack at Pakhoi, perhaps he wants me to "Dunkirk" those two brigades so he can rush those troops towards Canton. Another Tank Rgt will arrive tomorrow with the INfantry right behind it.

I can not believe what horrible luck my attack at Koumac had. After waiting three days for the attack to finally launch it did, and it was horrible. Somehow his men on their beachhead got a nearly 100% upwards adjustment when the majority of my troops prepped at 50+ (soeveral units @ 100) got adjusted down by 20%! I was expecting something near base on base; a 1:1 at least....but perhaps Floyd is right...."the game hates me". At least in New Claedonia I downed many of his Wildcats.
