Battle History of the IJN by Paul S. Dull is good as well.

A very unfortunate family name for an author...

I had to build a library to hold all my history books.  The "short" bookcase is 8' x 8', has six different bookshelves, and is currently split about 40/60% with Civil War/WWII history books.  Nearly all the ones mentioned above are on those shelves, along with dozens more, including the Friedman books on US Cruisers, Destroyers and Battleships, every book I can find on the Guadalcanal/Solomons Campaign, Shattered Sword, Miracle at Midway, At Dawn we Slept, Storm Landings, Peleliu, etc.

Currently reading "At War with the Wind" (about the kamikazes and defenses against them) and "Inferno" (Hamburg 1943), with "Endgame 1945" and "Italy's Sorrow" in the wings.

I was hoping that was a misprint. [:(]

Dull's book is one of those rare ones that stands the test of time. Great book.

Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is a good choice if you want a riviting battle narrative (USN side) of the Samar engagement. For a more technical and full scale Leyte analysis i'd recommend Thomas Cutler's The Battle of Leyte Gulf: 23-26 October 1944

You guys are going to scare off the "straights". Who is going to by this game if they are obliged to read 20 books before they start? [;)]

You say that like it's a bad thing...

Books about JAAF units are quite rare. The only ones I know of are two small volumes published by Kagero on the 64 and 68 Sentai, and Shores, Hata and Izawa's history of the JAAF as a whole published by Grub Street.

Kagero also do two excellent volumes on the Ki-27 and Ki 84.
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.
