About air attacks on convoys

Post by kaleun »

I have had several frustrating episodes playing Japan in WITP:
If there are US and UK carriers present, my naval bombers and Betties will always attack the UK carriers with bombs that bounce off their armoured decks.
Also if an invasion task force is detected, If my betties are carrying torpedoes, they will attack minesweepers and the like; the next day, they decide to attack the battleships, but of course they are carrying bombs that day!

Is this going to be the same in AE?

Sorry if it has been asked already.

If the question is "am I going to be as unlucky in AE as I am in WitP" then the answer is: probably.

If the question is "can the above happen in AE" then the answer is easy: yes, it can. In fact your bombers are far more likely to carry bombs in AE because of needing an air HQ and torpedo ammo is kept track of.

And Kaelun, it goes the same for both sides. I can't tell you how many times I've found myself screaming at the computer "Go for the bloody transports!" as I watch my bombs bouncing off the IJN battlewagons and cruisers that are escorting the invasion fleets...

not to mention your shiny Mitchells or Marauders being sloughtered by the Uber CAP of the KB while some other far more lightly defended targets are around[:D]

Hopefully with the ability to control our bomber loads now we can at least put the torpedos we do have on the most experienced torpedo group available, maximizing their effect.  I have a feeling you are going to want to arm most of your bombers with bombs just to keep from wasting the torps anyway.

Besides, bombs work just fine on transports anyway.  No armor and slow = sitting duck.

Of course the prospect of your bombers loading with the wrong kind of ordnance is prototypical, and the reason the Japanese planes were caught on the decks at Midway...

Ideally, we've always needed the ability to set a wide set of base strategic and tactical parameters.

I don't think there is an "randomness" to the aircraft ordnance load out in either WITP or AE ... maybe there should be!!! For WITP it depends on target, range, and base size. In AE it is "more complex" but still predictable.

In the case of carriers, in AE, for example, I do find myself reminding myself to set the torpedo bombers to carry "bombs" as a default, unless I think I am going to fight a carrier battle. You have enough torpedes for about 2 attacks with torpedoes per carrier, so if I am going to be hitting anything but enemy carriers, I will probably select bombs, then I can hope if enemy carriers do show up - I have time to switch back to torps. Otherwise, I will find myself fighting the enemy carriers with no torps aboard.

Is the # of torpedoes on a CV set down as an actual number, or is it something like "two attacks' worth"?

Was any thought given to removing 'sorties' completly and including bombs as well as torpedoes as a set number to use and then have to resupply.
I remember this question being asked and a poll taken before WitP was released... Sorties won the vote...

If you going to count bombs, then you have to count bullets. You have to count gals of av gas and figure how much gas was actually used, how many bullets were actually fired. In other words opening a kettle of fish that would take many more years to complete the game.

Would it be worth it to you? Actually none of us care if it would be to you, it wouldnt be to us [:D]

Was there any thought towards it? I can't remember, probably some, the data that tells us the torps, tells us the bombs, sizes and counts and usually the av gas. But as Yammy says, we have to draw a line somewhere. Torps seemed to be a bottleneck easily reached which would have a big impact. So we drew the line there.

I would love to see some 800kg AP bombs counted........would love to run out of torps only to have to shift to that lovely bomb and pound a BB caught at sea with KB. LOL

Ideally, we've always needed the ability to set a wide set of base strategic and tactical parameters.

Guess I should elaborate. The base user interface should include a much wider set of choices and perhaps even priorities. HQs and units could also have more UI choices than just prep points. These priorities could be offensive and defensive postures (which reflect number and types of missions flown), target priorities (naval: surface warship, carrier, transports); air superiority: (airfield suppression, sweeps; strategic: (civilian, manufacturing, resource), submarine doctrine (mercantile, major warships, escorts).

Unit prep I believe should be based more on terrain and country rather than simply a single base.
