How do you think the Japanese Siege Regiment would do on Markus or Wake Island ... ?

It has

24 x 240mm Guns
24 x 150mm Guns
12 x 150mm Howitsers

Together with a Divition dug into Fort 9, a Combat Engenere Regiment and a Costical Defence Regiment it would properbly provide a nice quantety of Firepower... or what do you think ?

[:-]I think it's a lousy idea. Not a squirrel's chance in a desert. I say put only road constructions units there. They are vicous, I tell you. I would never attack a place loaded with ONLY road crews! Best to put that heavy artillery in China, or better yet the Russian border, yeah, that's it, the Russians could come across any second! Put it there.

I think regiment would do great there [:D] and I would encourage all Japanese players to place it there [:D] as well as many other troops as they can. Four or five divisions as well as many SNLF would be fantastic. Of course, I never invade those two islands. I will bring out a CV task force to do some bombing runs if I need to increase the experience but other than that I ignore them. I have never figured out why Japan wanted those two specs of dirt. One of my current opponents just spent a month taking Midway. I wont bother to retake it either. While KB was there I reinforced some critical areas and in the long run will benefit from his focus on Midway. YMMV

If the AI would do such a thing I might consider it at least half intelligent.  I successfully invaded both Wake and Marcus Islands in 1943 and now they're advance sub bases, with PB4Y's flying out of Marcus providing recon and TF spotting as far west as Iwo Jima.  I occasionally send them to Iwo to bomb the ships in port there as well.  IIRC Wake had a base force when I invaded, and Marcus had a SNLF, a base force and some engineers but no big guns, hardly a challenge for the 32nd Infantry Division plus Marine Raiders and Rangers that hit them.

A big Japanese problem in the Central Pacific is that there are too many islands that are sufficient bases.  A patient Allied player bombs to get a notion of what's there, invades and builds out what is least well held, and leaves the big garrisons behind as giant self-administered POW camps that double as live-fire training ranges.  I don't think the Japanese have enough troops to be strong everywhere, especially by late 1943 when the Allies started their historical counter-offensive in the Central Pacific.

Yeah, but does the AI have to put 20+ LCU's at some bases and none at others?  Right now Rabaul, Palaus, Truk and Kwajalein all have a dozen or more LCU's each, and they are indeed "self administered POW camps" in my campaign.  It looks like Iwo Jima is also stuffed full of LCU's, but there's little in the bases I've recon'ed in the Philippines.  Looks like MacArthur is going to have an easy go of it at Davao and Leyte...

Well the AI is IMHO indeed poor,  but what does one need the AI for when we have a community filled with players ???
