Trojan virus discovered in GAME.EXE

Post by SlickWilhelm »

When I launch Hired Guns, I received this error message from my F-Secure AV application:

"Malicious code found in file C:\MATRIX GAMES\HIRED GUNS\BIN\GAME.EXE.
Infection:W32/W.B
Action: none."

A little googling brought me to this website: http://www.avira.com/en/threats/section ... t.nai.html

FYI Erik. I'm not saying that I got this virus from the golden master download...but it's possible. No indication of this virus was present on my system until I tried to execute the GAME.EXE for Hired Guns. I downloaded this from the US Store, btw.

I can confirm that the copy in the store is virus-free. I think the chance is approximately 100% that this is a false positive by your anti-virus software.

Looks like you're correct, Erik. I just performed a complete scan of the Hired Guns install tree, and it came out clean.

Sorry for the false alarm. [:(]

Better 100 false alarms than 1 real virus sneaking by.

9 times out of 10 AV reports false virus. The problem is that many people allow the AV software to auto heal the virus and then they are screwed. There have been two cases in the last couple of months of AV software pooching people's OS because the AV software was quarantining  Windows system files and once that was done the customers could no longer boot back into Windows. AVG was one of the companies but can't remember who the other company was. Best to set AV software to report only and then investigate further on the internet to determine if it really is a virus or not.
