RE: Surface action at Rabaul

I hope you are prepared to lose the 18th Indian Division.  Anything sent to Java is probably on a one way ticket, particularly when playing under 2 day turns.  The fact that your opponent is moving quickly on Singapore, Makassar, Amboina, Kendari, suggests to me that he will quickly cut off Java from resupply and land there before you have built up Festung Java.

The defense of Java

Post by RUPD3658 »

I am willing to lose the 18th ID at Java. Same thing for all the Dutch Base forces and Garrison Rgts I have evacuated and brought to the island. I figure that the 18th ID will double the AV of the defenders and keep the airfields open for 2-4 weeks longer. With over 150 bombers and 150+ P-40s (plus another 100 or so crappy Dutch fighters and bombers) they should exact a heavy toll for the capture of Java. Currently I have over 200K supply on the island with more on the way from India.

The longer Java hold the longer Gordon must wait to either invade India or Oz by sea. It also requires the KB to support any landings thus keeping it out of the Eastern Pacific. This allows my carriers and BBs to make a few raids without fear of the KB spoiling my fun.

RE: The defense of Java

Post by Alfred »

I'm not certain I agree about the KB having to remain in the DEI to support Java landings.

1.  Palembang is not strongly garrisoned and is easily captured by the Japanese.  With the west Malaya and north Borneo (as per stock map orientation) air bases under Japanese control, he can contemplate landing on Sumatra without the assistance of the KB.  Certainly the allies will not be able to intercept the enemy convoys at sea.

2.  Once Singapore falls, not only does the invasion of Sumatra become quite easy, but Batavia air base can be neutralised.  With Palembang also under enemy control, Japan will dominate Allied air space over Batavia and Merak.  A landing at either site will be covered by enemy LBA.

3.  Once the enemy lands on Java, it will be too late to build up Festung Java.  Nor should you assume you will be given an opportunity to build Soerabaja AF up to level 5 to base B-17s.

4.  After Makassar, Kendari, Amboina are fully functional enemy bases, the obvious move is to capture Timor and thus cut off southern Java from resupply.

In short, an aggressive Japanese player does not need to retain the KB in the DEI.  The sacrifice of the 18ID may therefore not produce the rewards you anticipate.

Anyway, just a few thoughts to keep you on your toes.[:D]

It's very interesting seeing a JFB try the Allied side.  You know what's coming and still try to fight it. [:D] The really interesting part is what you're focusing on - nit picking the Japanese to death.  You're not really worried about Allied losses, as long as they take some Japanese with them.  You already took out a CA.  That's 1 down and 17 to go.

I learned this lesson against KDonovan while I was playing Japan. Once I accepted that I could lose a tons of stuff but still win (Or draw which was as good as a win) it was a liberating experience. Rather than dwell on losing a CA to an airstrike I will be thrilled that it took 2 planes down with it. [:)]

I think that this is the mindset needed to play the Allies. Too many first time players give up when the Japanese run wild.

I keep chanting my mantra "Less than a 4:1 loss is a win" and it makes it easy to accept. I am willing to draw the stop line well beyond the historical one since I know that when my offensive begins in 43 it will move much faster than history did.

The real fun here is sniping, hit and run attacks. Really messes with an opponant's head. Every ship escorting convoys that I could never attack, every plane CAPing a base I won't raid, every LCU guarading a base I won't attack is one less in the field I have to deal with.

In my last game I had KDonovan convinced I was going to invade Perth since I had raided it. I helped this by setting several units to plan for attacks there knowing that eventually SigInt would pick one off. He had the place guared well into 1944.

I hope to post some screen shots soon to make this a bit more interseting. Work has been crazy so my time is at a premium right now.

RE: The defense of Java

Post by ny59giants »

I agree with Alfred about Java. You will be cut off and have no way to evac any non-Dutch planes. I disband mine and have them re-form in 90 days at Sydney. Look at the transfer range of your various fighters. Most have short legs.

I would send over your patrol planes to evac partially to totally cut off troops rather then use fast Transport TF.

I know on CHS & RHS maps that Malang on Java is a mountain hex. It is a malaria hex, but the x4 combat bonus is nice to have vs. the clear hex at Soerabaja. Many Japanese players will prep their troops for the wronmg base while I could get many of my troops near 100% for Malang and hold out.

RE: The defense of Java

Post by RUPD3658 »

My worst fear was realized with the bombardment of Seorobaja. I had expected any TF to be spotted and attacked before it could get in. Too many patrol planes were on troop transport missions. This has been corrected.

Beat up a few more subs today. I need to clear the way to PH for th 200 ships that arrived as reinforcements at SF today.

RE: The defense of Java

Post by RUPD3658 »

Seorabaja is now a level 5 airfield. Poundings of Jap bases will start soon.

PT boats and subs hopefully will prevent a repeat of last turn's bombardment.

Mini KB snuck through my patrol AC screen and attacked a TF off of Canton Is. Luckily they didn't hit anything. The main KB has gone missing. My CVs are about to meet up at PH and I have a nagging fear that the KB has gone there. If not it should turn up in the DEI or near PM soon. Once the KB is spotted I have plans for an attack on Baker Island which will require CV support.

Japs landed at Gili Gili. I am guessing PM is next.

RE: The defense of Java

Post by RUPD3658 »

4E bombers make their 1st appearance at Java slamming several ships and an airfield. Over 1/2 were damaged in the raids so they won't fly for a while.

The KB showed up in the DEI and sank several ships.

In China a localized counter attack finished off several disruted Jap units.

RE: The defense of Java

Post by RUPD3658 »

Jap BBs sneak through again and plaster Batavia.

LBA strikes a Jap convoy in the DEI and damages 5 transports and sinks a CL. The KB seems to have been scared away by the 4E bombers. Good thing for me since less than 1/2 of them can fly. A KB raid on Seorbaja would be every bad for me.

Johare Baru fell. Now it is just Singapore.

RE: The defense of Java

Post by RUPD3658 »

4E bombers continue to hit a Jap convoy retreating to Baliakpapan. It will also have to run a gauntlet of subs. Bad weather has moved in and anlong with the low morale and heave fatigue, the bombers may have to pull back to OZ for a while.

Manila and battan are low on supplies. It looks like Battan will be taken firts. Singapore is no better. A total of 350 AV, low supplies, and high disruption

"And out of the morning mist appears 6 Japanese carriers to flatten Java." I am waiting for this to happen with you playing 2 day turns. Don't keep rolling the dice. I would trying to diversify your LBA there to prevent one base from taking all the casualties.

Perhaps this should be allowed to happen. Our Samarai must pay his pennance after all. BTW, I don't know if others have experienced this but I too have had many a Japanese SCTF show up at a base and be no where in sight by the AM air ops portion of the turn. I think Mr. Spock looped around the sun and brought the IJN a cloaking device or two. I am in APril '43 in my game and for the first time saw a SCTF coming and was able to move units out of the way.

NY Giants will still go to the SB!!

I will run the turn when I get home from work but it looks like you were right. I set my LB to a max range of 6 to keep them in range of their fighter escorts but the escorts did not fly. Looks like a pounding is on the way. I plan on pulling as many AC as possible to other bases before the bombardment comes. Morale on the 4E bombers will probably keep them out of action for a while. The good thing is that the KB must travel sub infested waters.

Battan fell and it looks like Singapore will fall next turn. [:(]

Madalay held which was the only good news for the day. The SEAC Chineese units should be in Mychina withinn 2 weeks. C-47s are keeping them supplied in the jungle.

Now who won Sunday's game between the NJ Giants and the Eagles? Hmmmm?

Singapore falls 1/25/42

Post by RUPD3658 »

100,000 POWs were taken at Kweilin and Singapore. I held out to close to the historical date so I am happy with their performance.

Soerabaja was spared the wrath of the KB. Only suffered minor damage from a Bombardment TF.

All the 4E bombers have gone to India to rest and replenish while the remailing AC have been dispursed throughout the island. More B-25 and B-26 are moving though OZ to take over for the heavies.

RE: Singapore falls 1/25/42

Post by ny59giants »

Now who won Sunday's game between the NJ Giants and the Eagles? Hmmmm? [:D]

I know the Beagles won the game, but the Giants are still in good shape. The next two weeks will be interesting. They have moved the Giants/Panthers game to Sunday night.

I would double check to make sure your fighters can make it to Burma/India from Java via Sumatra before they get cut off. I'm getting the feeling he is going to make a grab for India sooner rather than later.
