Ideas for New Misc Models

Post by Mobius »

I’ve been watching the W.W.II East front features on some of the history channels keeping an eye out for interesting things in villages and background. I found a few items that would be good to add to the misc. models to add a little more bling to the maps.

1. New telephone/telegraph poles. The ones included in PCK are all T-type with 4 hanging wires. I saw some single poles with just 2 wires. Also, saw T-type pole with an angled support brace in several shots.

2. Big stoic rail stations. These things look like they could stand a Class 5 hurricane. Check some Trans-Siberian RR sites for pictures.

3. Water towers. I don’t know what they would look like as I didn’t see any of these. Some battles have been over control of the towns water tower so there must be a reason. Maybe like in the mid-west they are the highest building in the town.

4. Railroad track sections. Make them 3-D with raised rails not a flat panel. If the telephone poles can have 4 hanging wires on each pole two straight rail sections on a flat panel of ties is a lot cheaper in terms of polys.

5. Some sort of generic depot building. The Soviet Union being a collectivist society collected a lot of things (trucks, tractors, equipment, cargo) into depots.

I've got a bit of time again, although I will need to relearn a bit of what I've forgotten over the past 3-4 months that I've been busy.

Railroad tracks are a must. Did anyone ever sort out the inability to place the track models that we have?

I do have a water tower that could be finished up relatively quickly.

Ben,

Thanks - I dont haves pics for examples but adding some winter rural bldgs. Would be nice. I find myself using a lot of the same snow covered buildings over and over as there doesn't seem to be as many of them.

I do prefer that the buildings have 2 squad capapcity and 3 squad if they are multi-story. That way sceanrio designer can set building capacity.

I imagine over time a more standardized approach to buliding squad capacity will evolve but for now, it's good to have flexibility.

I think at some point I'm going to have to create a catalog of models available, although the ability to preview them in MM really helps.

Thanks,
Rick

I have literally hundreds, if not thousands, of photographs of the Eastern Front during WWII. Everything from the men and equipment, to the places they fought. If anybody is needing photos of anything in particular I can more than likely provide them.

While I can't make a program like MM I can support the series in other ways.

Gentlemen,

I have redone the RR Tracks ... And, I thought I sent this to Stridor a long time ago. I'm at work right now but when I get home I'll upload the new RR tracks. These are models that have been recentered (like the bridges) to allow easy placement and alignment.

RR tracks in the Ukraine at times were on an embankment as high as 10-12 feet. This was to keep them from flooding in the rainy season.

That should prove interesting in a PCK scenario.

I just received my copy of "Angriff: The German Attack on Stalingrad in Photos" by Jason Mark. This should be good fodder for something like a depot type of building.

For those that might not know the books that Leaping Horseman publishes:

They are thoroughly researched books on Stalingrad primarily. I have the others on the battle by LH books, and all are amongst the best books I have on any era of combat studies. All the books filled with information from street level operations and have many aerial photographs (as well as many never published ones from the battle).

Another great arrival is "Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin". This book focuses on the combat operations in a level of detail never seen before. It contains lots of new photos and aerial maps with unit positions. For such a chaotic battle, the author has done an amazing job in researching what units were where and when.
