Dad saw wood burning German tanks!

My dad was in the ETO during the war and saw wood-burning stoves on a small shelf at the tail-end of German tanks which helped propel them during combat. Now I understand.

You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Yes. The tanks had engines for propulsion, but the woodburner shelf was for conversion of mineral fuel into combustible for those diesels.. They were fitted to Pzkw Iv H and J models that I recall. See the link I provided. Much has been written on this and indeed Patton had his people fit the system to Shermans "just in case".
At any rate, I doubt they were produced in any quantity, but I have no doubt of dad's integrity.
