ny59giants,
Well, not operating out of Phnom Penh --- just a tad bit too obvious. Soviet doctrine always talks about the need for surprise and the fact that it is much better to take an impassable route and surprise the enemy than it is to take an obvious route and blunder right into minefields etc.
Obviously though people might point out to the whole Northern Route bloodbath and say that it is, by now, ueber-obvious as to what my route is and how I'm progressing along it. That's true but when one wants to be sure to fix the enemy's attention it helps to be really obvious about it. The back of the IJN ( minus its CV arm ) has been broken along this northern route ( e.g. I have 6 BBs in action along this route but the enemy BBs facing them have all been withdrawn for repair ).
LOL re: the Pe-2. I really think the focus on this plane is excessive. It is nice but the AAA regiments at Bangkok have butchered them when they've been used there and, to be fair, 100 Pe-2s can't cover everywhere all at once. I would point to how little trouble the Pe-2s have caused me in my game vs 2ndACR and suggest that a little forward planning can really neutralise the Pe-2 threat.

RE: Forward After Interruption
I just want something that can penetrate the armor of a Japanese CA or BB. Those 500kg AP bombs should be able to put holes in some of them. American 500 or 1000lb GP just bounce off them. [8|]

[/center]RE: Forward After Interruption
Really? I'd have to check the figures again but I think the 1000 lb bombs really tend to mess IJN BBs up. The deck armour on those things is pretty poor... and it makes mincemeat of anything less than a Yamato class CVA ( and even then it will sometimes penetrate ).
So, today I sent my Fast Transport TFs in. These comprised, about 1 BC, 1 BB, 6 CAs, 4 CLs, 4 CLAAs and about 50 DDs, DMs and DMSs. A single CLAA got hammered pretty hard by enemy coastal defences but the rest of the force got off scott free. About 75% of the 1st USMC is ashore and ready for action. With over 240 AV ashore, disruption of ZERO and 2000 tons of supplies I am confident Petropavlovsk will fall tomorrow. At that stage it'll be a simple matter to bring in more transports, build Petropavlovsk up into a major bastion and begin shipping supplies into Magadan and moving Fast Transport TFs down the Kuriles towards Japan.
Since I was able to pull this off in the face of what appeared to be between 4 to 5 CVs Damian is now under notice that ANY base he has within 5 hexes of one of my bases is now vulnerable to being suddenly assaulted by the entire 1st USMC on any given day without his airpower or navy ( which utterly overmatches mine ) being able to intervene.
I must admit I think it must be demoralising to Damian to realise that even though he is incontestably superior to me in terms of his CV strength I am finding ways to dodge around that and render that strength relatively ineffective whilst still being able to push ahead and advance toward the Home Islands.
In the MaThaiNam area ( Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam ) the IJA has pulled off a really rather excellent withdrawal from Camranh Bay. It looks like 3 IJA divisions just disappeared - I imagine they have been sea-lifted to the Phillipines to help subdue Manilla for once and for all. The cost of this is that my forces are going to link up at Bangkok. There's at least 1,000 IJA AV there and I'm thinking of allowing them to remain there, trapped and out of supplies while I extend into Malaysia and into Vietnam laterally ( I'll use paradrops and lateral path movements to give myself the operational freedom necessary for these lateral moves.
The build-up of the British fleet continues at Rangoon and, at this stage, the British fleet comprises 2 BBs, several CLs and about 25 DDs as well as over 100 transports. That is more than sufficient to bring a truly significant amphibious force into play once Singapore falls in addition to pushing eastward through China itself. The key question I need to decide over the next month is whether I'll coast-hug along the Chinese coast, attempt a shallow encirclement of Japan via Northern Borneo, Southern Phillipines etc or go for a deeper encirclement including Java designed to bring the 3,000 AV of Australian etc troops in Oz into play.

Here are the penetration values from your game via the Editor.
500 lb GP - 45
1000 lb GP - 70
1000 lb AP - 149
2000 lb GP - 110
4000 lb GP - 140
250 kg AP - 132
500 kg AP - 164
800 kg AP - 210
One thing you may consider in your next version is to do what Cid did for RHS, have 1 of 2 SBD squadrons carry the 1000 lb AP vs GP bombs for each American CV. Otherwise, even those planes that can carry the 2000 lb GP will have their bombs just bounce off the deck of a few BBs.

And in a flash update ---- I don't normally shamelessly promote things on this AAR BUT I MUST give you the link to the new Burger King cologne.... When you absolutely MUST smell of barbeque-flavoured meat.
Seriously, check out the website. it is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen. I think the falling rose petals, the barry white-esque muzak and the invitation to "Press To Spray" are actually quite disturbing also. It just feels WRONG. Scratch that, the sickest thing is the naked guy wearing the Burger King mask and beckoning seductively with what sounds like barry white inviting us to "Stop, drop and roll".

RE: Forward After Interruption
V good points and very reasonable. The change is made. ALL USN VS SBD-3 squadrons now come with 1,000 lb AP bombs. The VB squadrons still have 1,000lb GP bombs. USMC etc remain unchanged.
SBD-5s ALL carry 1,000 lb AP bombs so from early 1943 almost anything the IJN puts to see which isn't a modern BB or a CVA can get murdered by SBDs. Same for SB2C Helldivers. I'll upload this tomorrow...
I was thinking of older IJN BB ( Kongos and Fusos get creamed with even the small bombs BUT it is definitely reasonable for the Allies to mount 1000 lb AP bombs given the increased deck armour of some of Japan's ships ).

RE: Forward After Interruption
Today Petropavlovsk fell to a determined assault by 1st USMC. I am flying in expendable (those for which I have significant numbers of replacements - significant being defined as about 100 ) fighter types ( P-40Es, my few remaining P-38s and Seafires ), a group of 40 Pe-2s and about 60 or so SBD-3s. The idea is that if the enemy CVs hang around to try and close the airfield I will get a chance to put a few bombs through their flight decks.
A contemplation on temptation: Vietnam is collapsing rapidly and I expect to be able to link my forces in China up with the forces besieging Bangkok in about 2 weeks time. The temptation then would be to race down the Malaysian peninsula but, obviously, that would give the Japanese a very long coastal flank to land in. Where would these troops come from? Manilla. How many troops are there at present? Well, there appear to be about 2,000 AV there at the moment with another 1,000 to 1,500 AV evacuated from Vietnam and elsewhere --- which I'm presuming is to deliver a killing blow to Manilla.
So, about 2 weeks from now the Japanese should be in a great position to land 3,000 AV somewhere in Vietnam/Southern China.
Of course I've been expecting just such a landing for some time now and I've been diligently placing 300 to 600 Chinese AV into each of the coastal Vietnamese bases in order to withstand just such landings. Once I link up with the other Allied forces around Bangkok I think that I'll go back and double these garrisons and create a nice central reserve while British, American and Commonwealth troops do the heavy lifting into Malaysia.
As far as Bangkok goes I don't think I have to capture it right now. It seems that the IJA has flung everything it has into holding Bangkok - it seems there is at least 1200 to 1500 AV there now, up from about 1,000 AV just a day or two ago - and so I'm beginning to prep forces for:
a) a shallow envelopment down the trails to the west of Bangkok from Tavoy in conjunction with
b) a deeper amphibious double envelopment into Victoria Point and from there into Malaysia proper.
If either of these succeeds then the forces in Bangkok will have to either withdraw down the peninsula or be trapped for the remainder of the war in Bangkok itself. Damian can definitely air and sub evac but that's slow and I'll collect a tithe of his evacuees and evacuers.

RE: Forward After Interruption
Well time for another update....
The Allies have continued to develop the situation in MaNamThai with a major besieging force around Bangkok, a smaller force ( some 800 AV ) moving down the trails from Tavoy with a view to trapping the troops in Bangkok and some 3,000 AV of Chinese troops allocated to clearing Vietnam and, most importantly, garrisoning Vietnam against re-invasion.
I think that Damian SHOULD choose to reinforce Malaysia, make it impregnable with these forces and then push the rest up to hold me at Victoria Point and west of Bangkok. This would prevent the Royal Navy from getting through the Malacca straits and into South China Sea proper. Once I get in there I'll rip him apart. the only thing that has kept this front relatively static is that I've had to do all my work only by land ( because I have 1 BB and 2 CLs + DDs facing at least 3 BBs, 6 CAs and innumerable CLs and DDs ) so once I get into the South China Sea proper the pace will pick up and that will endanger Damian's entire position.
The picture below shows the situation.
The red arrows show the path taken by the retreating IJN surface forces after their tactically inconclusive attack on the forces at Victoria Point ( but strategically the invasion wasn't touched and so it was an Allied victory ). Losses were pretty even with each side having 1 BB and 3 to 5 DDs beaten up.
In other news I am planning to place significant Chinese forces at Saigon, Camranh Bay and Hue. I already have about 500 AV at each base but if a given base is to withstand 2,500 AV amphibiously asaulting then I need at least 1200 AV per base. Kompong Song and Haiphong will be held by lesser forces.
Manilla - Manilla finally fell. This was the most amazing point of the whole game. I didn't transport in a single ton of supplies yet it still managed to do a good job of holding out for months. It was never going to survive forever though. Ah well, c'est la vie.
As far as Malaysia and Java go I'm planning to take advantage of the losses to IJN DDs and run FT TFs into Phuket before developing it as a staging base for strikes into Java at Kuala and Medan. That should allow me to exploit southward under cover of my fighters threatening ever base on the western side of Malaysia. This should spread the Japanese enough to actually allow a succesful landing somewhere. The details will depend on where the Japanese are shown to be weak. I have about 1,000 AV sitting in reserve just waiting to load up and base forward for this Malaysian invasion and I can't imagine Damian being able to fight off such a sizable invasion.
This should all result in some pretty fierce naval battles and that's good as I've been looking to write down the IJN in the area for a while now.
I will update as regards the Kuriles later.

ggm,
This is Empires Ablaze, a "what if" mod designed to model a Japan which :
a) is more competitive into 1944 and 45
b) has some cool "what if" toys to play with during 42 to 45.
c) has a more challenging economic/production model to deal with.
Allies are boosted too to keep things competitive.
On to the Kuriles....
Well, as you can see I've created two traps there in the two atolls nearest Japan. I took them with paras and then airlifted in the guts of a US Army division to each. With this force on hand I figured that the counter-invasion Damian would undertake would be able to be defeated. So far he has thrown about 600 AV onto Uruppu Jima and has had the majority of that rendered combat ineffective. This is quite according to plan really as I wanted to draw his rapid reaction force in and destroy it before I tried to really tackle his strategic depth.
Currently I'm in the process of advancing down the island chain, building an airfield on each island to provide CAP for my forces before moving firstly FT TFs and later APs and AKs down to bolster my forces and create the base from which to undertake my next "great leap forward".
This stage should be finished by mid-September and then from mid-September the rather nasty and, I wager, unexpected portion of my plan can unfold.

RE: Kuriles in Motion
Since it takes too long to post every CR and edit it I'm going to try a new tack and just post the high spots on an ongoing basis.
So, 22nd August 42.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kota Bharu [Malaya] , at 24,45
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 2
Ki-43-I Oscar x 6
Allied aircraft

B-17E Fortress x 145
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zeke: 11 destroyed
Ki-43-I Oscar: 3 destroyed

B-17D Fortress: 1 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 4 damaged
Japanese ground losses:
45 casualties reported
Airbase hits 34
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 140
Well this was a nice strike claiming some 140 IJA and IJN planes on the ground. particularly nicely I killed another 30 A6M2s which takes the number of those destroyed to 2,700. Since about 700 had been destroyed when I took over this is a loss rate of some 2,000 Zeroes in just over 100 days. Not bad at all.

BB Kongo, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
CA Nachi
BB Hyuga, Bomb hits 3
BB Nagato, Bomb hits 4, on fire
The retreating IJN BBs got some attention from my strike groups. Undoubtedly a lot of people are going to fixate on the Pe-2s here but since none of their bombs could penetrate the BB deck armour the actual damage here was done by the Avengers.
In reality I think the Pe-2s ARE massively valuable but their main value lies in the fact that people get so fixated on them that they forget to properly guard against more conventional and boring threats and then these boring and conventional planes come in and rip the enemy asunder.

The IJA might just push me back here. I have set 100 bombers to disrupt them tomorrow to try to prevent this and will pull back to the mountains again. This was very nice play by Damian. He suckered me in and then attempted to take advantage. His only mistake was not gambling fully and going for a Shock Attack. He temporised with a deliberate attack and thus might not gain the success he deserves.

RE: Kuriles in Motion
Since it takes too long to post every CR and edit it I'm going to try a new tack and just post the high spots on an ongoing basis.
Damien is reporting a successful paratroop drop on Kuala Lumpur. That sounds like a high spot to me.[;)]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

This ought to force his fighters back which will let me bring the Wellingtons back into theatre and let them do their low-level work. I particularly want to remove his fighters from LRCAP range of Bangkok as my ground assault is going to go in once the Ozzies and US troops are in place and I want to lead off with massive B-17 and Wellington raids at low altitude.

When I meet A6M2s in other theatres I routinely butcher them. In this theatre his best A6M2 pilots are STILL able to get over 2:1 exchange rates in their favour under unfavourable conditions. Of course, in so doing he's lost another 32 pilots he will have difficulty replacing.

Harlock... I think this is what Damian meant about Kuala.... It wasn't Kuala Lumpur but Kuala in Sumatra. I am seeking to bring in 3 Armoured Bdes to race down the eastern portion of Sumatra, taking those 4 airbases and allowing me to threaten the entire western seaboard of Malaysia such that the enemy cannot retreat from Bangkok and hold me at Ban Don ( where he is, undoubtedly, building as many forts as he can ). Essentially I'm setting the groundwork so I can Inchon him if the situation warrants it. What sort of forces can I bring to bear for such an amphibious assault?
Well, I'e been rebuilding a reserve force for just this opportunity over the past month, withholding it from combat around Bangkok etc even though it would have helpe, and I've managed to get slightly over 1,000 AV ready for this venture.

Right now my biggest problem is supplies. I need about 50,000 tons for Petropavlovsk and will need 20,000+ on each of the little Jima Atolls. Right now I only have 50,000 in total. AKs are on the way from CONUSA with about 150,000 though so it should all be sorted soon and once I get over this initial hump I can have resupply convoys running the route regularly every month ( that's the time a round journey takes )

A 1000lb bomb at a range of 720 miles really has a way of ruining one's day. Their ceiling, speed and survivability SUCK but for that range and payload I'm happy to make those sacrifices.

They can't hit heavily defended targets at all but for clipping passing merchants and uncapped SC TFs they are great.

Damn, he reacted quickly with his own paradrop. This is an excellent use of his parachute troops... Kudos to Damian. My tank units are redirected to Sabang and will just begin the march 120 miles farther north than I had hoped. C'est la guerre.

The IJN arrives on the scene. Interestingly there were only DDs. It looks like my plan to force the BBs out of action through damage has paid off and the "inconclusive" battle of a week or two ago ha achieved its strategic objective.

Hmm, there's a drop in defender AV here. It looks to me like some infantry units have fled. Time to move over to the attack. Once I get sufficient bombers into position I'll hammer him with a couple of shock attacks. My forces to the west are only about 4 days from cutting off the supply line to bangkok. Damn, I almost had 2,000+ AV in an unsuppliable pocket. This would have caused the loss of a force equivalent to what he has freed up from Manilla and would have balanced the strategic scales a bit. Ah well.
