prince and me start our PBEM (orginal matrix version..no MODs) with the following HRs (thanks to chris):
-only one port attack on turn one, no overabuse of the turn one movement bonus (means no landings on turn 7 in Australia or something like that)
-max. aircraft on airfield max. 50*airfield size (+about 10%) eg size 4 = max around 220 planes (around means perhaps 223 but not 238!! )
-max. aircraft in sea hex = "around 450" (= 5 Essex carriers or the equivalent size 9 airfield). Can be adjusted to around 550 also if you like.
-Japanese are not allowed to do strategic bombing in China! Far too easy to destroy all the ressources, HI and OIL. Japanese may bomb everything else of Allied territory.
-Allied are not allowed to do strategic bombing of JAPANESE OCCUPIED ALLIED territory. This should prevent the Allied player to do suicide attacks e.g. with carriers to destroy some oil facilities (which I´ve seen enough) and for the reasons mentioned under above point. Allied may bomb everything in Japan, Korea, eastern China, Thailand = everything Japan held at 1941/12/7. If you want to starve Japan, take the bases or sink the ships!
-B29 aren´t allowed on naval attack
-B29 only on level 6 or 7+ airfields, this should limit them to places that were big enough in real life.
-4Es on nav attack min alt 15.000 ft
-ASW TF max 6 ships
-PT boats max 6 at a base (1x6 PT TF or 2x3 PT TF. Not 6 TFs with single PTs!)
-no sub invasions
-no mini para drops. As many para drops allowed as wished but they should involve at least 500-1000 men at min.
-cutting off units only with "real" combat units, not some 10 assault point base forces
-no use of dozens of small barge, MSW, ... TFs to guard ports (engine can´t handle dozens of small TFs in one hex)
-no exploit of dozens invasion TFs going at one base, means: if you need 300 ships for an invasion, put them into 5, 6 or 7 TFs but not in 60 TFs with 5 ships each.
-RAF units are not allowed to use US-equipment. means that british units in burma/india will fly british planes.
-a maximum of 2-3 divisions at atols like iwo jima, midway, wake...
first action report from the HQ of kimmel tomorrow. hopefully it does exist after the expected japanese attack on PH.
edit:
as the allied player, i did the following things to keep the game as realistic as possible:
-no building of new TF. all ships remain in the ports where they are at turn december 7. also, i only moved exixting Tfs which are at sea.
-no escape of the air units from malaya, philipines, PH, australia, "indonesia".
the great war starts with an air attack on singapore. the strike force of 22 fighters and 99 bombers manage to destroy 9 planes and cause light damage to the AF. the japanese (IJN units) lost 2 nells.
several small air attacks on manila port from "mini-KB" manage to destroy 2 SS, 1 DD, 1 MSW, 1 AK.
the big attack on the philipines focused the AF at clark field. 66 fighters and 90 bombers manage to destroy 32 planes and lose 2 of their owns. the AF took some serious damage.
at PH, KB started 76 zeros, 126 vals and 143 kates to attack the port and AF there. the japanese lose 28 planes to the flak and manage to destroy 120 US planes mostyl on ground. then they head for the battlefleet and manage to cause heavy damage to 4 BB and 20 other ships.
the biggest allied air attack was started from singapore. 24 vildbeests manage to put only one torpedo into a japanese AP causing light damage. most other attacks were small and uncoordinated attacks which targeted the japanese battlefleet causing no damage while the air strikes had some causalties because of the heavy AA.
japanese troops land on wake, guam, tarawa, gasmata, gili gili, menado, amboina, sorong, hollandia, biak, morotai, khota bharu, apari, vigan, legaspi, batan, mersing, toboali, jesselton, kuching and tawi tawi.
seems that prince wants to capture the whole pacific in one turn.
day 2 of the new war saw some small allied victories:
a small STF surprised a japanese landing fleet near menado and sunk at least one AP.

in the Pm phase, the same strike group managed to put a fish into the CL Isuzu and one more Ap, setting both on fire. also, the brave dutch airmen in their outdated planes managed to damage 3 japanese AP heavily near borneo and i doubt that all of them will make it back to the port.
KB is spotted NW of PH and it seems to move back to japan.
beside the intense air attacks, the japanese had some more succes on the ground:
thats alot, but at least, the aussie and indian troops repulsed a japanese attack at Mersing:
Ground combat at Mersing

all in all, the start wasnt that bad for the allied. espacialy the 30 intact SS who managed to leave manila, should cause some pain for the japanese shipping in the next turns.
KB came back and started a port attack from a position NE of PH. 104 kates managed to put some bombs on 4 BB causing medium damage. major bauer (a P-40 pilot) shot down 1 zero and 1 kate and has now 3 kills after 2 missions.
-philipines:
several air attacks on clark field which caused light damage and destroyed few AC. the AF is closed since the beginning of the japanese aggression. between philpipnes and borneo, a fleeing transport TF run into.....BB mustu without any escort! we lost 1 AK and all SS in the area are directed into the last known position of the japanese BB. there are 20 SS hunting the mutsu and the mini KB (1 CVL, 1 CVE) actualy.
-malaya/borneo:
thats where the action is at the moment. brave airmen from singapore flew several attacks on japanese ship concentration at mersing. CL isuzu and 2 AP recived some torpedos and went down! we lost 14 bombers to the japanese CAP (navy zero fighters over mersing) but sunk our first japanese capital ship.
the japanese captured:
-tawi tawi
-makin
-hong kong (we lost 17.000 POW)
-morotai
the ground forces at mersing fought well again and killed 700 japanese troops in the defense. reinforcements are on the way to mersing, because if prince can capture this base, he can advance through malaya and cut off my troops N of mersing.
in this turn, the japanese lost 20 AC while we lost 38.
quiet turn here. KB is hanging around PH. maybe a trap to get my ships when they move bach to pearl.
south pacific:
quiet turn here.
-PH:
several small strikes from mini KB between borneo and PH. we lost 1 MSW and 1 AK after torpedo hits.
-DEI:
i saw a japanese transport TF at Amboina in the last turn and orderd the ABDA force (consisting CA, CL and DD) to intercept them. unfortunary, the transport TF wasnt at Amboina at the next morning. instead of defenceless AP and APD we found very lethal betty and nells there. they started several attacks on my SCTF and managed to sink DD Parrott and CL Marblehead.
-malaya:
the heroic defence of mersing countinues and after a worthless japanese shock attack, around 1000 japanese soldiers will never see their homeland again. we lost 26 men.
the japanese managed to capture:
-Menado
-Hollandia
the empire lost 13 AC and we lost 23 in this turn.
some BB have repaird floating damage at pearl and will head for the west coast asap. the KB is out of strike distance in a position NW of pearl.
south pacific:
small japanese invasions in the bismarck achipel. otherwise no activities.
PH:
army P-40 operating from manila managed to initiate a dive attack on a japanese strike force of 23 bettys without escort! the army pilots did an excellent job shoting down 8 bettys and damageing 3 other. the surviving bombers caused no damage on the airbase at manila. the P-40 FG at manila has 14 kills now....not bad for outdated and outnumberd fighters.
the japanese forces are SE of manila and N of clarck field while we have strong positions in both locations.
some japanese carrier elements started several small attacks on the fleeling allied fleet between PH and borneo. they sunk 1 DD, 1 AK and managed to damage 3 mord AK and 1 TK.
DEI:
japanese airborne? troops (500) landed in central malaya. my troops N of them are in danger and will head to the south what means that we give up the defence of north malaya and concentrate on positions N of singapore. at mersing, the japanese division there (21.000 troops spotted) was the target of a bombardement attack by several allied brigades.
japanese BB, CA and DD (for sure also the KB) are 700 miles NW of pearl. they seem to wait for something. otherwiese, it was quiet there. the air force at pearl is repaired and got new planes as replacement. we have now over 400 AC at pearl.
south pacific:
no further japanese atatcks there.
PH:
the P-40 FG at manila has 22 kills now! with several pilots haveing 3 kills. it will not take a long time to see the first allied ACE in this young war. but will it be a army pilot or the wildcat pilot major bauer at pearl?
in the last turn, 1 zero and 2 bettys were shot down for 2 damaged US fighters. the moral of the unit is at 91 now! and their leader has a 73 A2A skill. japanese troops are at manila (1 division) and N of clarck field (at least 40.000 men), but we still hold both bases.
-malaya:
british aircraft from singapore managed to put 3 bombs into 2 japanese AP Khota Bharu. escorting buffalos shot down 2 oscars while loseing 2 of their own. at mersing, the japanese got reinforcement and attacked with 19.000 men. they lost 650 and the allied lost 41 men and hold the line.
the small japanese unit (500 men) which landed at Malacca behind my troops in N malaya wass eliminated after a shock attack with 6000 troops.
more allied fighters will be deployed at rangoon to counter the japanese army air force in burma.

USAAF B-17 attack the large japanese AF at amboina for the 2nd day. as expected the japanese CAP is too weak and ineffective against this heavy bombers so they can deliver their bombs all and destroy one lethal japanese nell on the ground. its better to kill them on the ground then to let them preform their torpedo attack.
the japanese have now more fightery covering their transport ships near malaya. so the brave singapore air force will have to fight against greater and greater resistance to reach their targets. todays attack was ineffective because of the strong japanese CAP.
the 24 FG left manila yesterday. i simply dont want such great pilots with their 42 kills to become POW. they will try to help the ABDA air force defending the DEI and then move to australia for R&R.

rabaul seems to be the next japanese target in the south. it should be a short fight because its nearly impossible to reinforce and to defend it with what you have in australia at the beginning.
that was the big attack of the day. the japanese army air force called for help and the navy sent over its zeros to support the attacks at rangoon. but 2 groups of the AVG managed to put 26 fighters in the air and get the first attack on the japanese formation...with a deadly outcome for the japanese. the AVG got its first ace in this air battle.
large japanese attack on snigapore AF. the outclassed british fighters were ineffective and so some allied planes are destroyed on the ground. the singapore air force lost 50% of its strength in the last turns.
the first japanese attack on australia! wirraways are no match for the japanese navy pilots and so the bombers manage to initiate the attack but with minor damage to the base.
the air war in china finaly starts after several quiet days before. this chinese I-16 did a good job and escorted the bombers well through the japanese CAP. unfortunary, the low XP of the chinese bomber pilots cause no real damage to the japanese AF.

the main action is in burma where a intense air battle for the supremacy is going on with larger and larger fights each turn.
in the last turn, we say 2 japanese attacks on the rangoon AF. the attacking forces consisted:
-41 fighters (first class zero and oscars)
-11 DB.
-16 LB.
out of this strike force, the japanese lost 10 fighters and 2 bombers with their expert pilots. the allied (better said the AVG) lost 13 P-40B while most of the pilots were able to bail out. and thats the most important point for me: flying defensive missions and saveing my pilots while shooting down japanese pilots over allied territory.
the AVG will upgrade to the P-40E asap and will stay at rangoon as long as possible. rangoon has a large number of ENg INF and AA units and in the last turn, a big convoy from karatchi was able to unload supply there without japanese attacks.
in china, we have a "Phoney War" and most of the DEI is still under ABDA control.

Remember that for killing subs near PH...
The old 4 stack DDs are the best (at this point in the war)...I think they start off at
4 in Jan go up to 8.....Very nasty. Also there is one PG that starts in SF or PH that is an
8.....
ASW bombers only have a real chance if they are at least 70 in exp.
You can gain exp (up to 79) by flying supply to the base that you are in. A cheap/sleazy way to train your
bombers to a competent level...They go up quickly to 60, take some time to get to 70...And go slow up from there....That said, I am in mid Feb and all of my original bomber units that have been able to do that from turn 1 are around 74-76 exp....
To quote from Evans/Peattie`s {Kaigun}
"Mistakes in operations and tactics can be corrected, but
political and strategic mistakes live forever". The authors were refering to Japan but the same could be said of the US misadventure in Iraq
