Speaking of Kidman, the new Tom Cruise WWII flick looks to me, from the trailer, like another movie that will completely irritate me. Anyone heard different?

Been awhile since somebody made a good WWII movie.

If you want to find out the real story about Operation Valkyrie, read the story/biography on Staufenberg (spelling?). Been a while, but it was a very good read.

Don't forget "Stalag 17," which may be the best WWII movie ever.

Don't think I have seen that one....I'll have to look out for it.

"Stalag 17" starred William Holden (Bridge over the River Kwai), Peter Graves (later of the Mission Impossible television show), and Otto Preminger. It is a drama with a nice touch of humor.

And, of course, "Casablanca" is a WWII movie, though not in the "smash-em-up" sense. It's a great story, but to add to your pleasure you get to look at Ingrid Bergman throughout the movie.

Casablanca is more love story than war movie, but its still a great one.

Another great Bogart war movie is 'Sahara'.

Many of the quick shots during the Darwin attack were from Tora tora tora. you will see a jap plane upclose dropping a bomb or torpedo and in the background there is the battleline or major shore facilities with cranes. The film cutting was very quick, maybe second and a half to two second shots so you have to look quick.

Fairly historic mix of aircraft, I saw some Kates and some Zeros and maybe a Val or two. It did look like the Kates were dropping torpedoes onto land targets, though. The Zeros all looked like they were carrying drop tanks that doubled as HE bombs too.

However, the attack played such a minor role in the overall movie that I would not recommend sitting through the movie waiting for the attack. I did and wish I hadn't. The movie didn't deliver on its promises, I'm afraid.

For a movie (PBS Masterpiece Theatre) about Australia in the war, A Town Like Alice. I'ts based on a Nevil Shute novel, and more about prisoners of war and a love story, but I thought it was really well done.

Where Eagles Dare is a GREAT movie!

i like the scene where Clint Eastwood hold off the Germans while at the top of a staircase... towards the end of the scene, you can see the wooden door behind him shot to pieces... except for the preserved outline of Clint! [:D]

I liked "The Eagle has Landed": a kin to "Where Eagles Dare" but with German commandos trying to kidnap/kill Churchill. (Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland).

A long, long time ago I saw a movie called "Yesterday's Enemy" (takes place during the British retreat from Arakan in 1942 or '43) where it seemed like each and every old cliche from Hollywood WW2 war movies was held up to view and then played out like it would really happen. Example: The patrol carrying the vital message for HQ gets ambushed and everyone is killed except one guy. The Japanese probe the bushes along the trail with bayonets but although one of them very nearly sticks the lone survivor hiding in the bushes he misses and moves on. After a seemingly interminable interval the survivor comes out of the bushes, takes about 3 steps down the trail and gets cut in half by a Japanese soldier with a submachinegun. I've looked but it appears that it is not on DVD. Sure did enjoy that one though.

Stalag 17 is EXCELLENT!!!
Where Eagles Dare is also very good!
I have to admit that I do love the movie Battleground (especially the colorized version from TBS which I recorded)
and another one of my favorites is They Were Expendable.

Of course I did like Band Of Brothers, but I am extremely looking forward to the similar series about the 1st Marine Division during WW2 done in the same way as BOB, but I'm not sure what the name is.

Stalag 17 is one of my favorites, also have a soft spot for Run Silent , Run Deep .

Has anyone seen this To End All Wars
I bought the movie a few years ago and thought it was well worth it the price, kinda reminds me of an updated Bridge over the River Kwai. I've always wondered why this movie didn't get more pub.

Check the trailer at the link for the interested.

i saw a movie years ago about the Battle of Midway made from the Japanese point of view which i THINK might have been "Storm Over the Pacific" (also known by various other names including "I Bombed Pearl Harbor", Taiheiyo no arashi (Japan), and "The Storm of the Pacific"... unfortunately, i can't find it on Netflix... has anyone seen this?

It was made in 1960, but some of the footage was incorporated in the 1976 film "Midway".

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I still think The Cruel Sea was one of the best.

Das Boot is really excellent.

I recommand also Cross of Iron with James Coburn and Maximilian Schell. (War on the East Front in 1943) The number II was not as good.
Ennemy at the gates on Stalingrad is excellent but even better the german movie "Stalingrad" of Joseph Vilsmaier
(original title Bis zum letzten Mann = to the last man ) is really impressive with the attack of german pioneers in the tractor factory or the attack of T34 in the steppe.

My guess would be that it is more a courtroom drama than war flick and slightly political expressing an Australian point of view to the detriment of the U.S.
BUT it was a fine film that I enjoyed greatly.
