Smaller target icons (hollering for Mraah)

Post by moose1999 »

This is an official request for a mod that makes the target icons over enemy soldiers' heads smaller or moves them upwards so they do not cover the soldiers' heads.
I assume the latter is the more difficult of the two... but changing the icon from a big target symbol to a small dot instead would also do the trick, I think...

Ok ... real quick ...

The original "e" image was 32x32 ... so to make it smaller and above the head I made a 128x128 and pasted the original 32x32 in and moved it up to the top.

The screenshot below shows what it looks like ... I use a 1920x1200 montior so the images might look a bit blurry here but you can clearly see the target crosshair when zoomed in and out.

Note the original big transparent "e" (enemy not in LOS) that I didn't change in the zoomed out image ... helps to compare.

I know this is tiny but I can always make it bigger ... this is just a sample for now so you can judge the size of the crosshair. Once the size is right then variations to the type of symbol can be made.

Thanks for looking,
Rob

If you want to try the new "E" tga from the images above, then attached to this post is a small zip with the tga.

Installation ...

1. Backup the "e.tga" file located in your HiredGuns/basis/ui/resourses/enemy_icons folder .... I usually rename it like "ori_e.tga".
2. Unzip the new e.tga to this folder.

Let me know what you think ... it's basically a down and dirty quick change.

Well, I like down and dirty... [:D]
It's great - so much better now.
The icons are not intrusive at all, now, and they still stand out quite clearly because of the red colour.
The "out of LOS" (greyed out) icons could of course be shrunk this same way, but I actually think I could easily do without them completely.
I mean, you only look for the red icon anyway, so if it's not there = no LOS.
Don't know if that's doable, though...

Thanks for your work!

briny,

I'm glad you like my cheap, little change ... it's functional at least. I'm going to consider this project as a continual "work-in-progress".

I encourage anyone else to upload their icons here too.

What I'll do is shrink the greyed out icon and upload a new zip. Also, I need to check the TAB feature because the greyed out icon are also seen on the edge of the screen to show you that there is an enemy out-of-camera-view.

Anyway ... if you happen to read this post before I upload the next zip and you have a request as far as any change to the icon shape then let me know. I was thinking about keeping the same size but change the shape to a red (gey) circle or oval ... The type and shape of symbols are endless in this respect. Right now I'll just keep the target symbol, albeit a shrunken version.

Changing the icon to an oval shape would work fine, I think.
And why not discard the bulls-eye graphics as a whole and just go with a simple, colored dot.
The icon is so small now, anyway, that you can't really make out the bulls-eye - it just makes the icon a bit more fuzzy.
So, a small, clean, red/grey dot would be my preference, I think.

EDIT: Changed my mind, I think a round icon would work best...

briny,

Attached to this post is a zip that contains new e.tga and ei.tga ... red and grey roundish dots (see screenshot next post)

Now, it appears that with these new tga's it has a side effect where enemies outside your camera view do not show icons on the edge of the screen showing you where yo need to look .... the edge icons aren't there ... so , you have to scan around for them more. (I haven't investigated why)

Try these out ...

Wonderful!

Downloaded it, and it looks much nicer with these subtle icons.
Out of curiosity - we could use the same way, with 100% transparent tga to completely remove those targeting markers?

I went ahead and did the same changes also for the 'listened to', 'ally' and 'dead' icons. I hope you don't mind, I also compressed your icons from 65k to 1k size. ;)

The complete set for small icons is attached.

pndrev,

I don't mind at all, good work! It's good to see other variations/mods.

Yeah the 1k compression trick, thanks. I think I left mine at dxt5 with mips.

I haven't gotten around to making them totally transparent but if you'd like to post any changes to this thread feel free. It will reduce the number of threads about smaller icons down to the minimum.
