On the night of February 27, 1942, C Company of the 2 Para (British) landed near Bruneval, France to obtain the parts of a German Wurzburg precision radar dish.
It was part of a chain of radar stations along the north French coast that was helping the Luftwaffe inflict heavy losses to the RAF Bombers.
Attacking from the beaches would have caused very high casualties do to defenses along the waters edge.
So a para drop was planned. In charge of the mission was Major John Frost (later known for his stand at Arnem in Operation Market Garden).
The main mission was the radar station but they also had to secure a place on the beach to load onto the boas that were coming to take back to England.
The mission was a complete success even though they took heavy losses (three men killed and seven badly injured).
They were able to get the vital radar pieces and capture a radar expert.
