political events

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

political events

Post by WanderingHead »

Out of curiousity ...

There are a few hard coded political events that could be made mod-able. I'm not really interested in changing them, per-se, but I was thinking that if they were moved over to look more like other poilitical events (those that are visible on the poli events screen) it would be kind of nice. For one thing, it is more consistent.

The kinds of events I am referring to are those that occur instantly upon regions changing hands:
a) French surrender
b) Italy joining Axis when France surrenders
c) Siam when France surrenders
d) Italian surrender
(did I miss anything?)

Benefits:
1) they become mod-able
2) all all specificly encoded possible events are visible to the player in one place (less need to consult the manual)
3) the player can see whether those events have already fired, and what their probabilities are
4) once this is mod-able, other events could follow the same "instant evaluation" method, e.g. the Russian Caucasus event which is currently a little slow to fire since it waits for the change of season.

Just looking for people's views on this. Not sure what I want to do myself :).

We have exchanged private emails on the subject, so Wanderinghead is aware of my views. If he is willing to do the work, I would support the endeavor. Of course, my initial concern was that the Caucasus event did not actually fire in time for the Russian turn immediately following the German invasion of Turkey / Persia. But greater consistency / modability is certainly nice. Then, it might be possible to make this event and other events more consistent. Using an example I have raised previously, why does Siam join instantly with a Japanese DOW against the US, whereas other nations, such as Bulgaria, Rumania, and Hungary only join in the turn after Yugoslavia is invade. Similarly, there is a chance that Italy joins the war instantly, when France falls. French Indo-China changes side, instantly as well.  My preference would be that there be some consistency across events and that all DOWs have immediate, rather than delayed, effect. After all, we are talking about three-month turns. Admittedly, this flows a bit further from Wanderinghead's initial post, but if mod-ability gives one the ability to adjust these irregularities, I am all for it.

As long as you're willing to do the work, I'm all for it mainly for these reasons:
