Can Port Moresby be held? SC#17

Post by Chiteng »

Playing head to head against myself:

It seems to me that once the Japanese have Eight CV they can
create two task forces and simply slowly overwhelm the USA.
Sure the USA gets Six very nice CV and they are very durable
but eventually they get damaged or whittled away.

The Japanese can land the entire 8th Army + support at Buna
and simply walk to Port Moresby.
The BB pound the port to pieces and if the US carriers show up
the Eight Jap CV can embarass them.

So my question is: Can PM be held? Or is it less painfull to simply
evacuate it?

Well i capped port morsby as the japs in #17 but i also held it with the allies the current prob is though im in #17 not getting any CV's. I got 6 or so CV's sitting in tokyo along with the yamato and musashi even the skokako that i sent back isnt being returned to me for a matter of fact none of the ships that i sent back are. So im stuck with no carries while the us got the wasp all others went down.

Kinda stupid that yah get punished for doing good though...

I dont keep alot of ships not if i need something had to send a bunch back already mostly DD's since there 5" just bounce of anything they hit. I did send another two subs back for repairs and have currently have a fleet otw from tokyo with the Kaga, Hiryu and Zuiho with a couple CA's and CL's.

Just gotta take some losses so that tokyo actually sends the flagship of the combined fleet the yamato.

I am on turn 200+ in a PBEM game with Crocky and I've held onto PM. Granted he has not made a push for it, but you can never tell what your human opponent will do so why just hand it over. It is one of my most important bases in the game. One way to hold onto it is to go on the offensive. If the allied take Gilli Gilli and march on Lae and Buna the Japs will not have time to think about PM.

I'll trade

Hi, I will trade you Lae, Buna and Gile for PM.
I agree it is silly to give it up without a fight. The Japanese are not guarented to get all those CV (I had to wait till Sept to receive any)

If the japs can throw everything at PM

Post by doomonyou »

you probably lose it but you can sure make it real ugly...stuff it with level bombers and hit thier ships, mine the hell out of everything nearby and as the first move I always move two or three subs to protect buna gili and lunga, so no easy landing there..put all my p-39's in it and set them to naval attack.. then I put them on ground at 100 feet.

Your right they can take it if they get all those carriers, but you can take some of them down with you and cripple thier AP fleet...Then its your turn as the allies to lay the whup down.

Personally i didnt need any carrier support to grab the base mostly cuz all bvut 1 US carrier was sunk and that was the wasp even though the mushi just sank her as well. So the next US CV is coming in 100+ days. But seeing that by the time i got to PM on the 1.7.42 there were only 20k stationed troops in PM and after the bombings etc etc there were 15k left.

All yah need to do is survive the first wave of allied attacks and then PM will fall if you brought enough troops. I belive the IJN only gets all those carriers if they are doing realy bad since i had to wait ages to get even 1.

I took PM in pbem

Post by brisd »

Playing Scen 17 I took PM as Japan on May 17th. I sank both Lex and York on May 6th without any damage to my CV's and my AP's made it to PM and unloaded nearly intact. I was getting only 1 to 1 land combat odds so I waited till I got some more infantry there and took it a few turns later as indicated. The allies were not able to reinforce that garrison at all because of my naval superiority.

No doubt of that, but whomever you were playing did they c-47 forward addition base forces and put 80 LB's in PM on 1000 foot naval attacks? I mean it doesn't sound like they really put alot of effort into it, because I have had people wander into that really heavy LBA fan and they rarely get out without a good kiss.

of course I have also lost Nomeua once to sneak attack like a giant freaking loser so who am I to talk....
