I´ve thought about the MSW too but I don´t expect to find any mines. Not at Yanam and not in the rest of India. IIRC I´ve found and sunk Dutch MLs North of Australia.

[:)] unfortunately I haven´t received a turn the last three days and I´m sitting at home not really able to move around due to having a screw taken out of my knee...

Miller is probably x-mas stressed...
Well, it's rather cold out there at the moment, here in the Old World, so you're better at home than outside anyway.[;)]

I hope your indian adventure goes well, otherwise that's a huge amount of elite troops you'd be at a risk to lose.

It´s nice weather here in Austria, would like to go skiing, like the last 25 years every winter...

DD Natsugumo
DD Arashio
DD Michishio
DD Asashio

Allied Ships
SS Truant

now Truant attacks with 6 torps (those that work!) but missed also... this is one of my ASW TFs... so far we´ve been pretty lucky...

Allied ground losses:
16 casualties reported

Airbase hits 11
Airbase supply hits 3
Runway hits 94

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x B5N Kate bombing at 26000 feet

Miller moved out all of his aircraft and we hit an empty airfield. The field is 100% inoperational now, that´s for sure, the major threat are the airfields on Ceylon now but those are far away and bombers can only attack unescorted I guess... we have only spotted one Allied strike today but it missed it´s target so our ships weren´t attacked today... Excellent, every day without an attack is a good day. IMO Miller has to throw the kitchen sink against my invasion NOW, every day that passes is a lost day for him...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 21,23 [X(][X(][X(]

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima
DD Hatsukaze
DD Oyashio
DD Kuroshio

Allied Ships
SS Truant, hits 2, on fire

This one scared the sh*t out of me! Truant fires a salvo at Kirishima but M I S S E D!!! [&o] In return the escorts scored a real hit and a near miss... hopefully this means that the sub is out of action and has to return to it´s home port...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 22,22

Japanese Ships
DD Yuzuki
DD Mikazuki
DD Kikuzuki
DD Minazuki
DD Satsuki
DD Uzuki

Allied Ships
SS O23, hits 3

now it´s time of my ASW forces... three near misses... a Dutch sub isn´t good news either as they are also using torps that go boooom 90% of the time...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 22,22

Japanese Ships
DD Tanikaze
DD Hagikaze
DD Arashi
DD Nowaki
DD Hamakaze
DD Urakaze
BB Ise

Allied Ships
SS O23

all fail to locate the sub...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 21,23

Japanese Ships
DD Yamagumo
DD Natsugumo
DD Arashio
DD Michishio
DD Oshio
DD Asashio

Allied Ships
SS Truant, hits 1

and Truant gets another near miss, isn´t burning anymore... our search aircraft have spotted no less than 14 !!!! enemy subs in the invasion area. I see them as the major threat at the moment. Therefore I have increased the search rate of my carrier based bombers to 20%. I don´t fear any Royal Navy ship showing up so I could even set my bombers to 50%+ nav search but I don´t like the "vaccuum cleaner anti sub tactic"...

SS Haddock was hit by a Val today... with Truant damaged also, I hope to see "only" a dozen subs left tomorrow... CV Shokaku´s damage is increasing, that´s very bad news. The carrier is now at sys 33, flt 14 and fire 10!!! I have ordered the carrier to head at flank speed to the next major port, escorted by 6 of my DDs... Pretty bad damage from one bomb hit, the carrier will be out of the war for 4-6 months I guess. Hopefully the Allied subs don´t get a shot at my carrier!

Allied ground losses:

Here comes our first deliberate attack at Sian! Forts were only at level 8 which is rather surprising but that doesn´t make much difference. We don´t take a lot of casualties, we have three units rotating out going back to Homan, fresh units are already moving in. Two of my eng units that were in the lead are totally wrecked. I expect Sian to fall soon. Amazing, Miller has four units at Kuchang, the base North of Sian and I don´t understand why he didn´t move them in to defend Sian. [&:]

Japanese max assault: 30 - adjusted assault: 30

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 30 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Yanam base !!!

I´ve really feared that weather could prevent my long range transports (Tinas) at Rangoon from flying my para rgt to Yanam or even worse, that Miller would have used his Dakotas to fly a couple dozen of inf squads in to Yanam as he could have thought about my paradrop. This would have forced me to unload a division on a hostile beach, causing at least 15-20% disabled troops and another delay. This way, everything works fine, the invasion TFs will arrive tomorrow night and will start unloading over the beaches, as Yanam is a level 0 port. We have spotted an Allied unit marching out of Madras heading East already. No troop movement in the Calcutta area spotted so far.

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Wellington III bombing at 6000 feet

What´s this? Miller is targetting my airfield? The level 1 airfield that isn´t a threat at all? Why not attacking my ships? The incoming escorts were shot down, the Beauforts turned back (why using those torp carrying Beauforts for a hopeless attack on this airfield?) but the Wellingtons once again pressed their attack through just to achieve a single hit on the airbase. This attack came from Hyderabad, 4 hexes North West of Yanam, it´s a level 3 airfield which means it´s to small for Wellingtons anyway. No idea what this attack should have achieved. Better would be to station 150 Hurricanes there and set half of them to nav attack, the rest to escort. Even if this would mean the loss of some 30-40 Hurricanes in one day, I would not like to see 50 going in for a bombing run at 2000ft... but I guess there isn´t too much airsupport at Hyderabad, probably only a single base force with 30 air support squads.

What is also interesting is the fact that Miller moved in A LOT of aircraft to Madras again. We spotted the dark airfield symbol there again today, yesterday there wasn´t a single aircraft there. Doesn´t he know that he can´t fly his aircraft out of a 100% damaged airfield? We have scored some 250+ hits on the runways and 40 on the airbase during the first two days of the invasion so why is he flying in aircraft again? Amazingly enough that N O N E were lost to ops while landing at a 100% damaged runway... not a single attempt was made to attack my ships out of Ceylon, the dark airfield symbol of Colombo turned into a light one today. It would really amaze me to see Miller doing no more attacks on my shipping.

My ships at Yanam unload at the expected awful slow speed, I guess it will take me 4-7 days to completely unload, then all my ships will head home under carrier cover again to pick up the second wave. CV Shokaku is two days away from a major port and it looks like she will make it. We´ve spotted a sub 300 miles South West of the carrier though...

unbelievable, the air search routine is still totally borked in WITP IMO. As mentioned last turn, due to 17 enemy subs being spotted in the invasion area I have increased the nav search (no, not ASW search) of both my Kates and Vals to 20%. The day before we only had the Vals on 10%. The result is... what can I say? I have immediately decreased the search to 10% on both bomber types again. I have also asked Miller if we should create a house rule about nav search for carrier based ac. This way it´s just totally off...

O24 is the only sub that sunk outright though. But with this routine as it is now, I could sweep the area within 4 days and non of the subs would alive anymore... [8|]

After the ss massacre yesterday we have agreed on a new house rule: all carrier based bombers max nav or asw search 10%

this is the first kill of the India adventure, the big AK carrying parts of a TK rgt won´t make it... Trusty received a near miss and was later reported hit by a Jake...

what´s very interesting is the fact that nearly all Allied SS in the invasion area seem to be heading back to Ceylon. Can understand that the damaged ones are going back, but as I´ve told Miller that I have set my bombers back to 10% nav search, I´m amazed that he´s now pulling his ss out of the area.

Miller told me that he has already written off India as I am aware of his strenght in ground warfare. Well, I´ve told him that it´s not the time to already write something off, I´ve just landed at the first base. China was his first lesson, now it´s already time for his exam! [;)]

so far everything is really going great. The hit on Shokaku is a mess but as she´ll make it it´s not a problem as there are enough carriers to take her place in KB for the next couple of months. As spotted yesterday, Madras is full of aircraft and just like yesterday, I guess airfield damage prevented the Allied aircraft from flying. KB launches another strike (I have to keep an eye on the max sorties) and we torch a lot of Allied aircraft on the ground today... Hyderabad´s airfields were empty today...

I still can´t believe that Miller isn´t throwing in everything he has...

couple of PTs attacked, too many ships involved to see them in the combat replay, heck they aren´t even all included in the combat report. Well, the game once again showed it´s ugly face with a bug as we got the message that my two surface combat TFs REACTED to another SC TF near MADRAS!! Well, Madras is Allied, reacts should only happen to friendly bases. Then my SC TF moved 6 hexes towards Rangoon (well, they can only move 4 hexes with the BBs but they moved 6 hexes [8|]) and the result is that my convoys at Yanam were unguarded.

In fact it was that the enemy PTs moved in at night from Madras, the game engine went crazy, the sh*t with the react movement happened and at daylight only my invasion TFs were left at Yanam. Would have everything gone like it should be, the PTs would have triggered a night naval engagement at Yanam against my BB TFs...

I know this might not be an option for you, but one way to get around only hitting one LCU with your LBA, is to strike from more than one AF. At least that's my experience.

yeah that´s a way to get more LCUs hit, thanks for the tip. Problem is that I don´t want to attack from another base than Homan as Homan is only 2 hexes away and I still take op losses each turn. Would I attack from Ichang further South I guess my op losses would further increase as this base is 4 or 5 hexes from the target.

I guess I will just have to keep on attacking and rotating my units in and out. I try to not attack with units that are below 90/100. I have more than enough support at the front and at Homan to see my units being brought back to combat readiness within short time. Something the Chinese units won´t have.

I´ve spotted troops moving out of Chungking going North on the road, so I guess Miller is now sending reinforcements to Sian. A little late again and so far only two units left Chungking.

My ASW forces still try to hunt down enemy subs, still with the usual results. With all those engagements since the start of the war, only three or four subs have been sunk by depth charges. O21 was later in the day hit by a Val on nav search. Only two enemy subs are spotted in the invasion area. CV Shokaku is save, heading for a major repair shipyard, heck even the damaged big AK seems to be able to make it, retiring to Rangoon with only 42 flt damage.

So far the invasion is going unbelievable well. I can´t believe that Miller isn´t really acting. The longer he waits the harder it will be. No air attacks, the RN was evacuated, the subs returned to their ports and even all his ground troops in the Calcutta area stay static! What is he up to? Does he even have a plan? [;)]

I don´t want to think that he has really written India off, it´s just too important. It will take another two days and my convoys have all unloaded and then my armada will head back to Rangoon to replenish and pick up the second wave of troops. At the moment some 4800 assault points have been unloaded at Yanam.

ouch, with the naval bombardment being totally pathetic, our bombers face a very intense flak defense over Darwin. Hit rate on the base was very good, unfortunately we didn´t really hit the airfield. At the end of the day we lose 7 bombers to flak (including 5 crews) but we also torch 46 enemy aircraft on the ground. Miller has stood down all his fighters on the map as he doesn´t want to face my sweeps, but he keeps aircraft on his fields in range of my bombers. A not that good combination.

Wallis island is big enough to build a level 5 airfield. We will take the island and build at least a level 4 airfield which then can support Canton Island and Pago Pago, both in torp and Zero range. Pago Pago will become a level 4 airfield tomorrow, this means the area around Canton will be far more deadly for an Allied attacker than it was during the last unsuccesful attempt to take Canton Island.

I just looked in my game what ground forces are available in India in May-June, and while I won't give you a full intel on it (you could get it yourself if you mean to anyway), I just can't see how he could hope to keep you at bay after having sent a full UK Div in Burma.  Not with 4800 AV unloaded, and more coming in the near future, and seeing how he fared in China until now.[:-]  In his place, I'd retreat all the way to Karachi, to hold in the city with lvl9 forts and plenty of off-map supplies (and all the reinforcements coming from thin air)... and wait for '43-'44 before counter-attacking.[:(]

Could you show a screenshot of the units you brought ?  or a list ?[&o]

I have played the Allied often enough to know what they have to defend India in mid 42. Therefor I don´t understand it to move units to Burma (not even a single base force...) or to deploy the Royal Navy in the Pacific. At the moment there are nearly 5000 assault points and some 1700 still to come. All that could save India would be a sturdy and stubborn attack on the invasion TFs from day one.

Here´s the screen of the units, there are more TK rgt, base forces and HQs further down the list. As you can see, the units there already sucked up more than half of the 75.000 tons of supply I have brought in. [:(] I´m a little bit feeling like Rommel in Northern Africa, I have to soon capture supply from the enemy to keep the offensive going.

WOW! This attack shocked me, I nearly dropped off my chair! When this huge strike showed up coming from Madras I was already prepared to lose half of KB. My fighters did a good job downing more enemy aircraft than I´ve thought but I knew it was impossible to stop the medium bombers. Only half a dozen of the Wellingtons and the three Beauforts turned back and it´s like I´ve mentioned already, I see those Wellingtons as the major threat for my shipping in this area, even though in this attack they´ve only scored a single 500lb bomb hit on Fuso. Hudsons scored with a 250lb bomb on the BB. Unfortunately also a Swordfish managed to put a fish into Fuso, the ship isn´t in a state that it´s in danger to be lost. Thank god those Swordfish are the only bombers in Nikmod easy to down, out of three passes you down two of those old biplanes. Otherwise we would have been in serious trouble. Well, we were totally lucky this turn, all those bombers could have attacked KB and not a bomb prove BB TF.

For two days already I have had my Kates on nav/airfield attack (Madras) to keep the airfield closed but for what reason ever, they didn´t launch. Well, today I paid the price and it could have come far worse! This even more shows me that I have to seize Madras ASAP! Even then it´s not 100% secure to sail from Burma to India as there are still the airfields on Ceylon, but the major threat are the medium bombers at Madras.

Another strike, this time against KB!!! I have to really thank the dice gods this time that only those three torp bombers tried to engage the carrier TF, this was pure luck. But this second attack really took a toll on my very high exp fighter pilots of KB (mostly around 90 exp!!). A second or third strike is poison for your Cap, in this case the fact that the Allied got the never ending bounce once again made it even worse. In total, we have lost 17 of our fighters, including S E V E N T E E N of our pilots! [:(] There are some 50 ships in this hex and we are fighting over "own territory" and still we lose 100% of the pilots. So, I can´t get it when people are telling me that they only lose 1/3 of their pilots over own territory or when they have a single laughable sub in the hex. I´ve lost 100% of the pilots today! For me, with my special edition of WITP, this is just a myth. Would I only lose 1/3 of the pilots, I would NEVER have a pilot shortage in 4 years of war I guess.

Well, we came away with a blue eye today! My last transport TF will have unloaded tomorrow night and all my ships are set to sail back to Rangoon for tomorrow. The troop transports are accompanied by two BB surface combat TFs and an ASW TF as well by my CVL/CVE TF. Some 90 Zeroes from Yanam will fly LRCAP over the empty troop convoys. I hope to see them 5 or 6 hexes away from Yanam tomorrow, this will mean a) no torpedo carrying bombers and b) no Hurricanes on escort. Hopefully the Wellingtons took a morale hit today that my Cap will drive them back and if we get lucky again, perhaps they will all attack my bomb prove BBs.

and here are the air losses of this bloody day! I guess we have destroyed some 250-300 aircraft since the start of the invasion while losing only a couple of dozen. But as this day showed again, if Miller would have kept attacking right from day one, who knows how many ships I would have lost already. It´s impossible in Nikmod (and I´m glad it is) to use KB as a vacuum cleaner against enemy airstrikes, the fragile fighters and carriers of KB can´t stand up against strikes coming from two or three airbases. Heck, it can´t even fight against this single level 4 airfield at Madras. Miller had at least a week to throw in the kitchen sink and launch strike after strike. Yesterday he did launch a strike but now my convoys are already heading back. He will have a small chance tomorrow to hit some emtpy transports but that´s it then. I´m not sure I will move in again before I have seized Madras. Of course I still have the option to use a dozen heavy cruisers to do a bombardment, I´ve already ordered a Dinah recon chutai to fly recon over Madras.

If you look at the aircraft losses, it´s interesting that we´ve only took down three bombers with flak, even though this CV TF had an AA value of 5000!!! [X(] This is impressive for the Japanese and for this date but it still didn´t help at all. Also note that the attacker only lost a ridicoulos single bomber to ops even though we have damaged more than 60 attacking aircraft. I´m losing bombers daily from flying two hexes to undefended targets at fine sunshine!

double ouch! We achieve a 1:1 this turn but the casualties are high, too high... while the enemy unfortunately didn´t suffer from my attack. My troops are nearing the state of combat ineffectivness at a high speed. Unfortunately we are in a hurry if we want to take this base before the enemy reinforcements are arriving from the South. I made a big mistake, I should have blocked the road from Chungking to Sian with 1000 assault points somewhere in the mountains. This would have been sufficient to cut the North off from being reinforced from Chungking. My bad...

as you can see, there weren´t any air attacks on my ships today! B I G M I S T A K E!!! I guess Miller sees his losses of yesterday as too big but IMO it was a MUST to keep on attacking. This turn all my shipping left Yanam and instead of following each other, they got totally dispersed over three hexes. This would have been the chance to hit a lot of my transports as most of them were totally helpless. Madras was empty again today, I guess Miller feared I would have stayed another day to bomb the airfield.

Well, I feared his airattacks more, so it was time to leave! [;)]

Miller has placed an Indian TK btn just behind the river next to Yanam! Why is he doing this? What does he thinks he can achieve? My 5000 assault points were ordered to march today, in two days most of those units will cross the river and it´s not worth the sacrifice of this TK btn.
