Hiryu sinks!

Post by RUPD3658 »

Intel reported that the Hiryu finally sank near Andaman Island. Another CV (Possibly the Shokaku) has been spotted by subs and they are in pursuit.

Total losses for the Trin landing so far are 17 AP/AK, a DD, and a handfull of MSW/PC. I am sure more will sink before it is all over.

Air battle at Tarawa

Post by RUPD3658 »

I sent everything I have at Tarawa while the KB is in the IO. Good thing I played it safe and went for Tarawa rather than a knock out at Kwaj. Despite 5 US CVs, 1 Brit CV, 1 Brit CVL, and extra Marine fighters the bombers still got through and scored hits on an APD and a BB. Had I goteen within Zero range of Kwaj I would have lost CVs. Landing will be next turn

In India I tried to supress the airbase at Trin and came out on the short end of the battle. AVG is down to 4 planes.

Allies retake Tarawa

Post by RUPD3658 »

Fortunetly for me the 4 spotted LCUs were 2 BFs, a CD reg, and an NLF so the landing was not too bloody. Had 2-3 of these LCUs been 108 AV Naval Guard units things could have gone very bad. Convoy routes are now back to being out of Betty range and once Tarawa is built up to a level 5 AF and B-24s arrive I can start reducing Kwaj as an effective base.

In India things are at a stalemate. Heavies are bombing the 6th Tank unit so that it can counter attacked and the supoply route to Mandalay reopened.

This is the state of the AVG after 5 months of constant combat:

Less than 1/2 of the pilots with kills are still alive. The units will be out of combat until I can get enough P-40Es to rebuild the unit or to swap them with other P-40B units.

RE: Allies retake Tarawa

Post by RUPD3658 »

More Jap transports sunk off of Timor. I will eventually have to try to retake the island. Maybe after B-24s come out.

Almost done unloading at Tarawa. The two adjacent bases will be taken soon.

RE: Allies retake Tarawa

Post by RUPD3658 »

Looks like the Mankin landings will get a warm reception. Surface units have been spotted moving in that direction. Hopefully my SBDs will get them first if not there will be a nasty surface engagement. I am holding my CVs 1 hex south to avoid this and to stay out of Zero range. The downside is that the landing force will have less aircover

RE: Allies retake Tarawa

Post by RUPD3658 »

No surface engagement but still a bloody day for me. Bettys broke through the fighter cover and sank the BB Pennsylvania with a single hit and damaged 4 others, 1 seriously. Had my CVs been in Zero range I am sure I would have lost a few. I guess 11 hexes of a Jap base is a no-go zone for a while longer until the Zero bonus expires.

RE: Allies retake Tarawa

Post by Mike Solli »

Hey RUPD, as the Allied player, I'd trade a couple of pre-war BBs for all those planes you shot down.  If he keeps this up, he's gonna be in a real world of hurt for decent pilots.

Also, catching that AD was nice.  He only starts with 3 or 4 and can't build any more.

RE: Allies retake Tarawa

Post by RUPD3658 »

Looks like the BB WVA may survive.

Jap bombardment TF hit Makin. Good thing I had pulled all my ships and troops back to Tarawa. Most will be departing now that the mission is complete. Hopefully 64 B-25s can keep the place secure long enough to get the AF to lvl 5. Then the heavies come in and we start to work on Kwaj.

Slow turn. Most ships have departed Tarawa and are headed back to PH for repairs and upgrades. CVs are returning to Tarawa to pick up the damaged BBs. Tarawa expanded to a lvl 3 port so they are now disbanded.
