You'll probably get about 20 different answers to this one, and you may want to check out the must read threads - I think there's one in there on altitude - but here's a short answer. It depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want to slowly wear down supply and starve the places out, go for 15 or 20,000 feet. You'll do less damage, but you won't take many losses and your morale will stay better for longer. If you're planning on launching a deliberate or shock attack that turn, or for whatever reason you are in a hurry to capture the place and don't mind the extra losses, drop them to 8-10K. Your squadrons will take more losses, especially in some of the CHS mods, but you'll have a better chance of disrupting the forces that you'll be attacking, and consequently a better chance in combat. Happy Bombing and Strafing ( and Happy New Year ).

Note - If you're just going for one port attack for damage to shipping, I'd go 10K and take a few losses. Hopefully you get torps, but if not you'll still hit plenty of ships from 10K with the 800kg APs.

If you are asking about bomber altitude, it won't matter as much if they are carrying torpedoes as the final attack will be at 200'.  The first AA attack on your bombers will be at the altitude you set for them.  You can set this high to avoid some AA, but if your planes are carrying bombs {you will not know what they carry till it's over and cannot set what they carry} the higher altitude will reduce bombing effectiveness.

In stock, 6000' seems to be the best altitude.  Lower and your pilots suffer much higher fatigue loss.  Higher reduces your bombing accuracy and increases losses from AA till you reach about 9-10,000' as heavy AA has a minimum effective range that is higher than 6000'  {NikMOD fixes this and makes AA far more effective than stock}.

I fly mine at 6000 feet (CHS) except over heavy AA pockets (like Singapore and Manila). There I fly at 11,000 feet.

No reason they shouldnt launch at 100 feet. Hard to say why with so little information.

Well... I was told that the lower the altitude, the more damage I can conflict. And another question.  When I Port Attack on the first day of WitP campaign, the Battleship Wales takes 99 points damage and also systems too but, no matter how much I bomb the Port, I can never sink the Battleship, unless I sink it in the first turn.   Well Happy New Years anyway.

Dive bombers need to be at least 10,000' to dive bomb, otherwise they will glide-bomb which is less accurate.  I think fighters on Sweep at 100' will strafe planes on the ground {or I am remembering what it was in Uncommon Valor}.

i feel you also need to take into consideration the Fighters escorting the bombers...  if it USAF you wanna go hight to allow the p-38's and 47's a better chance of beating the cap

What if the CAP is a LRCAP set to "CAP OWN BASE" in Alt 42000 Feet.. then your gonna have to fly below the CAP... if you like it or not... and it will come diving down at you when you come whatever you do..

Of course you will still have the advantage on the ones Scrambeling.. but the one high above you will come diving down at you when you come...
