Cargo and Mine Capacities of Submarines

Cargo capacities of Submarines

Cargo capacity is determined by three factors:
  • 3 load points per torpedo reload not carried
  • 1 load point per aircraft carried
  • 10 load points per capacity point (under capacity in the database)

If you assign a submarine to a Sub Transport TF and actually load cargo, the submarine will reduce the ammo level of each torpedo tube to 1. The load points made available equal three for each torpedo unloaded. For example, after April of 1943, the USS Narwhal has 10 total tubes: 4 front with 4 ammo; 2 rear with 2 ammo; 2 front with 1 ammo; and 2 rear with 1 ammo. The Narwhal’s load points available are 42. If cargo is loaded, the Narwhal’s torpedo loads are then: 4 front with 1 ammo; 2 rear with 1 ammo; 2 front with 1 ammo; and 2 rear with 1 ammo. The total loaded torpedoes are reduced by 14 (from 24 to 10) and the load points made available are 42 (14 x 3)

Note that most subs retain the same cargo capacity through the game, but a few change as the torpedo configuration or capacity changes with upgrades. These are:
  • Gato Class reduces from 60 to 42 cargo – 4/42 upgrade
  • Narwhal Class reduces from 48 to 42 – 4/43 upgrade
  • Arognaut Class increases from 24 to 84 – 4/43 upgrade

I have not figured out how the mine capacity is calculated, but I have determined what the capacity is for each class.
I have been inputting my orders for the campaign game first turn since July 4, 2009. I'm getting close. In another month or two, I might be able to run the turn!

The Japanese I-121 through 124 (not sure of the type) carry 42 mines and an additional 8 if they don't carry torpedo reloads.

I have seen the Japanese Type D1/2 maligned by some people, but with 800 Cargo Capacity, it can carry quite a few troops and supplies.  61 SNLF Squads or 266 Supply Points.  That seems pretty useful to me.

Type KRS. I corrected the original to show 50 mines. This is a good point. The Japanese Type KRS or the Alled Argonaut has the choice of loading out in a large port with 50 and 68 mines respectively or just going on a normal patrol carrying 42 and 60 respectively, then switching to the mine layer role while still carrying a full load of torpedoes. The Dutch 019 has the same choice.

I have researched the problem with the Argonaut.  It is a good minelayer for those who practice mine-warfare, but in 2/42 it will upgrade (if not prevented) to be a relatively poor patrol sub with little mine capacity.  It does not become a good transport sub until a 4/43 upgrade.  The Capacity of 6 should have been added in the 2/42 upgrade.  Historically, the Argonaut went straight from Mare Island in California, where her mine gear was removed (also added torpedo plotting gear and better engines) to Pearl where she was fitted out as a troop carrier.  This all happened in early 1942.  She was in action in August 42 delivering Marine raiders.

I reccomend making a database change to add 6 capacity in the 2/42 upgrade.

I always turn off the upgrade to the Argonaut... she stays in pre-war guise throughout her career in my games.
fair winds,
