Late Christmas Present: A Red Barber Audio Clip

Post by KG Erwin »

In 1979, the ole Redhead spoke at a broadcaster's convention, and gave his recreation of Johnny Vandermeer's second consecutive no-hitter in 1938. A tape of this recently surfaced. The article/sound clip is here:

There are a couple of clips of Red on the web, but I mostly knew of him from his Friday morning chats with Bob Edwards on NPR. However, now having heard some of his recorded broadcasts from his heyday, it's easy to hear how he influenced guys like Vin Scully.

I find a delicious irony in that a Southern gentleman became the voice of the Brooklyn Dodgers for many years. It's another reason why many people identify (then AND now) with the original "America's team".

Mr. Barber is gone, but his legendary folksy style will be remembered as long as baseball exists.
