as both Yanam and Hyderabad are level 4 airfields now we launch with full bombload but the hit rate stays awful. How on earth can 120 Kates from 26.000 ft score 140 hits on the airfield when they carry only half of the bomb load of my medium bombers? No, the experience of my Kates isn´t that much higher than those of my LBA.

this strike came from Calcutta. Unfortunately Miller can transfer his ac around without me seeing it and this was one of those surprise attacks again. I guess those squadrons will be transferred out again when my bombers show up over his base tomorrow. Miller must be thinking he´s still playing a stock game, while Japanese flak is only 30% as effective as the Allied, going in at 6.000 ft against a now well defended base is not something to be recommended. At least most of our bombers were out on an attack also, the enemy hits a lot of our precious Tabby transport aircraft on the ground though. I don´t like the supply hits either, at the end of the turn the base showed no damage to the runway but still 6% to the base facilities.

At least Miller got a bloody nose with this attack, with my experience playing him so far, he will stop his attacks now! It was quite a distance from Calcutta and a lot of bombers crashed due to flak damage.

here are today´s air losses. Nearly a 1:1 in ac lost, I´m happy to see 10 Wellington destroyed. The replacement is only 30 for those dangerous bombers but there should still be far more than needed in the pool as Miller is/was very conservative in using his bomber force and so far only 85 Wellington were lost. On the other side he´s still using Blenheims which are totally crap, could this mean that he does NOT have a big pool of Wellingtons? Would be great if we could catch them grounded and destroy a couple of dozen next turn...

Edit: just calculated it through again, I doubt that the Wellington pool looks good! [:D] If he received 30 bombers each months for about 6 months then he got 180 as replacement, probably two dozen as reinforcement. This means some 200 Wellington available. In this strike there were 60+ and over 80 were lost. So probably some squadrons are based elsewhere and some bombers were damaged, this should mean the Wellington pool should be EMPTY! [&o]

Have you tried using LRCAP over Madras to ensure he isn't using transports and/or patrol planes to get supplies in??

If you get 2 of those medium Allied BF (Aviation Support 90) in a base, you know they carry a serious amount of flak.

I doubt he´s flying in supplies, he would be better of flying in troops if he does. If Madras falls, then it was not that it hadn´t enough supplies, the troops there would just be worn down due to my overwhelming numbers. I doubt that he has supply issues anyway and flying in supplies isn´t worth it.

The two base forces at Madras make it impossible to close the base and the runways are already repaired again. Airbase damaged must still be high though, I guess he could use the base for his ac in a couple of days again, won´t make life easier for me. But KB arrived in the area again and with his bombers again hit by my flak they will have a very low morale which means my Cap will turn them back. So I´ve got four of five attacks with my Kates on the airfields in this area...

and here is the attack on the empty airfield of Calcutta. I just hate this stupid feature that the Allied can see my aircraft transferes. I have airfield symbols everywhere, but that doesn´t help as they turn into dark red as soon as I transfer more ac in and that´s what´s the Allied allerting. Voila, immediately they change their base to a base 1500 miles away and fly attacks out of that base....

same in China, I moved 200 ac to attack Chungking (where we spotted Cap and ac on the ground the last couple of turns), voila, today Chungking was empty... stupid feature...

Panaji is a level 1 airfield with one unit there (must be the static base force). There are fighters and fighter bombers at the base, for what reason ever. A sweep would have been sufficient, would have saved a couple of my bombers... my bomber losses are far too high...

here comes the strike from KB that was ordered to move flank speed to the hex five hexes off Colombo to stay out of Swordfish torp range. There was a good chance that Miller keeps up his ground attacks on my tanks which normally go in in the morning phase, therefor my laser guided bomb equipped Kates were set to nav/airfield attack as the airfield attacks then launch in the afternoon phase when we can catch all those bombers, that launched from Colombo in the morning, on the ground. This time it worked out perfectly! Although it could have gone really bad, I just can´t figure out why our Kates launch nearly unescorted all the time... my fighter daitais are set to 80% so there should be far more Zeroes on escort. Would Miller have set his fighter bombers on Cap, he could have shredded our high exp torp bombers.

The tiny escort was evaded by the Beaufighters and they shot down one Kate A2A. Still can´t figure out how the Kates achieve such a hit rate with only two bombs from that altitude.

but what should I say about all my op losses within my Sally sentais? This is just nuts... and AE will further increase op losses, as if there wouldnt be more than enough already. [8|]

and here I can show you how those stupid bugs in the game can ruin your PBEMs. The 21st division is ordered to move with some other units to move into the hex marked by the arrow. Instead of moving further with the other troops on the rail, it jumped off the rail into the open hex! [:@][:@][:@]

Oh how fu**ing often have I seen this bug already... ground combat is a mess in WITP but not even the M O V E M E N T works... and no, there are no enemy units sitting on the rail that forced my unit to march into that hex...

it will take at least 10 days for the division to march out of that hex onto the railline again, this could be enough time to make my drive on Bombay impossible, make my invasion fail and going my PBEM down the toilet one year game time earlier! [:@] Damn bugged crap!

as expected after my attack with KB on Colombo, Miller moved his aircraft into Madras and I gambled with the hope that all his bombers are so low on morale that they would turn around when meeting my Cap. I thought the enemy bombers would attack in the morning but they didn´t! [X(] Weather was fine so that wasn´t the reason to see them being grounded. This is the AFTERNOON phase already and we destroy a lot of aircraft at Madras and the enemy did NOT launch a single bomber against our carriers!

This time our escort was a big better than the dozen fighters last time but after taking down and turning back a couple of enemy fighter bombers, the Hurricanes attacked my high exp torp bombers and took down 7 of them in no time. [:(] Well, my special edition of WITP again showed ALL pilots lost over Madras! This with nearly 186.000 troops sitting there. Would think that 186.000 troops in the hex would be better than a single sub, it´s a mistery for me how people can say they save at least 1/3 of the pilots shot down if there is a sub in the hex. [&:]

This doesn´t happen in my games and it never did. As the Japanese I normally lose 90% of the pilots of aircraft shot down A2A, no matter if it is happening over my base, over an ocian hex, with a sub, without a sub, with carriers, over land, over land with 2.000.000 of my soldiers in the hex...

the loss of 8 crews (one additional lost to ops) is hard, but I guess Madras is now still full of aircraft as this time Miller can´t immediately transfer all his ac out with the rail movement as Madras is cut off! Therefore we will attack again tomorrow torching some more of his ac, hopefully a couple of Wellingtons more.

our two TK regiments take Trivandrum and the remnants of two Indian div, a UK bgd and a UK base force S U R R E N D E R!!!! That´s a victory! Those troops will never come back as I doubt that Miller was able to save a fragment of those troops. Bringing all those tanks to India is surely worth it! My tanks alone have destroyed those four units.

And here is the most important happening this turn! The enemy carrier TFs were spotted!!!! An Emily from Pago Pago spots this TF but as you can see on the position of the TF in the hex, there are more TFs in this hex. I guess... far more...

Is this an invasion TF? Hard to believe and where would it go? At the moment those TFs are nearly 1000 miles South of my outer defensive line. Possible target could be the Fidjis perhaps? New Caledonia? I don´t know. If I would be Miller, I wouldn´t attack any of my bases at this stage of the war, his carrier losses just were too severe. Is it only a big transport operation to Australia?

Miller isn´t really amused about his situation at the moment I guess. I hope he doesn´t mind me posting his comments:

I don't understand what happened at Madras.....I had 120 various bombers and 60 escorts ready to fly, plenty of supply, no airbase damage, decent morale, no bad weather....yet they stay on the ground and die......no doubt most of the rest will go over the next few turns.

considering the fact that I´ve seen his fighters and bombers turning back in droves in the last weeks, stumbling from one beating into the other, I seriously doubt they had decent morale. IMO the only die role he missed was the morale check to attack my carriers.

what am I doing? I ordered this attack two turns ago but it didn´t launch and last turn I forgot about it. Thought those bombers would also attack Madras. Well, there´s one good thing we found out! Nearly no flak at Bombay! [X(] Even though that we go in low, we don´t encounter real flak fire from the 5 reported units there. I think that there are some troops that were evacuated from Singapore or the SRA as those 5 units are only reported as 5000 troops! This would make Bombay an easy target for my divisions marching North - if they don´t jump off the railline...

and here´s KB´s strike in the afternoon. We meet only a low number of fighters on Cap but they are able to take one of our escorts down. We achieve a 2.33:1 kill rate today, that´s not satisfying at all. But overall, it was a very good day when we look at the enemy´s losses at Madras. It´s like I´ve mentioned earlier, Miller can´t move out his ac via rail as the base is cut off, I´m not sure he thought about that when he moved those aircraft to Madras. Now they will all get destroyed. He should have flown out all undamaged ac this turn. We again torch a dozen Wellingtons! [:D]

our two TFs are unloading supply at Yanam, our troops are slowly filling up their supply need. Those 185.000 troops at Madras need some 40.000 supplies alone [X(] to meet their demands... now you know why I said that supply is a major issue for me... when the TFs at Yanam have finished unloading I will have brought nearly 200.000 tons of supply and it´s far from being sufficient. Well, either I have brought far too few supplies or far too many troops! [:D]

Miller is sending more troops out of China into Burma even though he should try to solve his desperate situation in China. Sending Chinese troops into Burma trying to hold Myitkyina when you are in high danger of losing both China and India is something that is beyond me... [&:]

As the supply situation for my troops at Madras seems to get better and better we now need the defending Tk btn and UK division highly disrupted. A couple of thoughts: a) Paul realized that he takes fewer losses if he sends his bombers unescorted (that´s how it is in Nikmod!). b) He could upgrade those Martins to Mitchells which are far better but didn´t. c) first appearance of the B17-E in this area, even though all get damaged not a damn single bomber is lost. d) Miller is building up Northern Australia now and there are hundreds of ac already. e) WHY ON EARTH IS HE ATTACKING AT 5.000ft??????? f) due to using obsolete bomber types, the losses where at least twice as high as if he would have bombers like the Mitchel or B-17 g)we get the usual totally disappointing Cap number with 45% in the air, more than 100 Oscars stay grounded, sitting in a row to get bombed. We were lucky we lost only 18, it could have been 80 also...

I doubt those bombers will come back anytime soon though! [:D] We will get the Tojo in a couple of months but from my experience it isn´t really a difference to the Oscar in Nikmod when it comes down to taking down enemy bombers. Even though the Tojo carries twice the MGs the Oscar carries it doesn´t have much more effect at all. Perhaps the Tojos can take down 10% more bombers but that´s it. On the downside in Nikmod the Tojo is the far worse fighter when it comes to fight vs. enemy fighters as it has such a bad maneuver rating, it can only fly straight ahead it seems.

and now have a look at this! Miller immediately reacted to my attack on Norfolk Island, looks like he doesn´t want me to have eyes in this area. I expect the invasion going in in two days. Got 200 aircraft at Noumea set to nav attack and escort 11 hexes (range to Norfolk) so I hope to catch some shipping. I could have set them to 15 hexes which would probably trigger an attack tomorrow already but I don´t know if the enemy carriers are also near this area already and I don´t want to see an unescorted strike against the enemy carriers, so I keep my bombers on 11 hexes nav attack. Guess we will only have one chance to strike, I´m sure the enemy will retake the base, the IJN base force is lost. An Emily chutai is already ordered to pick up parts of the base force.

Do you understand me when I say I hate urban assaults? Unbelievable that the enemy gets his av multiplied nearly 10 times. I´m happy that our adjusted av stayed over 4000, I expected to see the enemy´s adjusted av to be somewhere around 2500-3000 but not that high. That´s insane! The good thing is that while it looks like we took quite some losses, it seems that the losses were totally dispersed within our units and none of my units was shredded. In fact, they all look like nothing serious would have happened. As the Indian Tk bgd is in the lead of the enemy stack I hope that it took some losses but with only 13 vehicles lost I doubt that. Really bad is the fact that even with 400 combat eng in the assault we were not able to take down a damned fort. It REALLY would have helped would my airforce have flown a ground attack mission, there was no reason they didn´t, weather was fine both in the morning and afternoon. A 60% disrupted UK division would have made the result quite different I guess...

It will take us at least another 5 or 6 attacks until the base will fall. If the losses are similar to today then we can afford that, again what we can not afford is the supply that is needed to do those attacks. When looking at my units all divs are in need of some 600-1000 supplies now, which means we have burnt something like 5-7.000 supplies today! [X(][X(]

this attack just came one day late. An excellent result, mostly due to the laser guided bomb equipped Kates. The UK division showed up with only 50% combat strenght in the bombardment combat screen later on. Would be great to see those ground attacks going in the day I will attack again, which will probably be in three days. Unfortunately KB is already running low on fuel.

strike out of Noumea, I´m not satisfied with the number of bombers, this is somwhere around 35% of my bomber force attacking this big TF. But still, we hit the enemy and that´s what we wanted to achieve with the conquest of Norfolk Island. Without carrier cover the enemy suffers and CL Tromp is confirmed lost. Only a third class light cruiser but better than nothing...

the majority of my bomber force failed to locate the target in the afternoon, most of the rest tries to engage CL Tromp (which is already sunk) and so only 8 bombers out of this attack drop torps, at least hitting light cruiser Java. Is it changed in AE that most of your bombers just turn around when they try to attack a ship that´s sunk already? This is one of the most irritating "features" of this game.

"Hey, we are ordered to attack CL Tromp! But it´s already sunk sir! Okay let´s turn around! Sir, shouldn´t we attack one of the other 40 ships down there? No, turn around!"....[8|]

now look at this! We´ve spotted now already F I V E units marching on Myitkyina! Miller sends five or more units out of China into Burma. I won´t have to tell you that I will counter that with more divs from my restricted China command into Burma also. The China command divs will be replaced with Kwangtung divisions in China. We don´t have a hr about restricted commands nor Kwangtung units in China, normally I just don´t use those troops in China, they aren´t needed anyway if you somewhat know how to wage a ground war. But in this case, Miller is sending retricted command units from China into Burma (we´re talking about something like a dozen units already) so I guess it´s only fair if I conquer this with sending restricted command units there also.

Any thoughts?

afternoon strike attacks the remaining main convoy at the atoll. The enemy cruisers have already left the scene. Guess we finish three more AKs for sure. Paul stated in his last email that "he´s happy to leave that Dutch crap within Betty range"! well, I´m happy too! [;)] This immediate counter reaction cost him a dozen ships, including CL Tromp and this AV that was sunk today. Guess he brought no base force in a second wave and he wanted to use this AV to support his patrol squadrons, say good bye to that plan.

now that´s a succesful sub! All of RO-34´s attacks on the enemy shipping at Norfolk Island were hits and the sub now retires to Noumea without torps left. Another RO-class sub takes it´s place at the atoll. Guess we will have one more day to attack shipping here.

It was again a nice and fast counterreaction of Paul, but for me the losses are too high again. If he would have waited two more weeks, he could have attacked with carrier support and would have lost probably far fewer ships but on the other side would have probably destroyed 50-75 of my high exp bombers and fighters. I doubt I would have hit his carriers as he could place them one hex West of Norfolk which would mean they would be out of my escort range and I wouldn´t send my Betties unescorted against his carriers and if I would, those Wildcats carry quite a punch and taking down 30 unescorted Betties is no problem of 100 Wildcats on Cap, not even in Nikmod.

we take Bombay in no time, it´s unbelievable for me that Miller left this base undefended. I guess it would have been better to keep one bgd here instead of sending it down to Hyderabad where I killed those troops with my tanks. Unfortunately Bombay did not have the expected big supply and fuel depots! [:(] At the end of the turn we capture 65.000 tons of fuel (which isn´t too bad) but only 8.000 of the desperately needed supply.

The resources and HI are still in good shape, together with Bangalore we now are at least producing some 500 supplies each turn. HI lacks the needed oil, so no supply production from the HI at Bombay. Still, this was an important victory here.

My Dinah IIs spotted enemy units moving North from Eastern India. They are now moving on the railline towards Dehli, probably heading to Karachi. My troops from Bombay will try to cut them off somewhere on the railline East of Bombay. Next target is Ahmadabad (hopefully undefended) as there´s a big resource center also that could provide us with some supplies.

The enemy lost 140 points for ground losses today, now at 10.404!
