Mod & Stock togather & multigames

Post by gladiatt »

So one meber of the forum just ask me kindly to play a PBEM ....yeahhhh, what a great idea. He would like to play with a mod. Nikmod IIRC;
In the same time i'd like to play one grand campaign versus AI; should i play this grand campaign versus AI with Stock, or must it be in the same Mod as another game played?

Thanks in advance for any answer i could get.

You can do a copy of the game to another file folder, and then do your modifications... you can run your PBEM from this install, and your AI game from the original installation.

You can make as many copies as you want with any mods you want... you just need to have a single install (don't run a separate install - just do a copy.)

Thanks Bob.
And is it the same, if i play my PBEM with a mod, and an AI campaign with the same mod: should i use two folders, or one is enough as long as it is the same mod, or PBEM files may corrupt all this ? (sorry if it sound idiot, but i'm not very good with technical hints...).

There are two technical issues:

1) Pwhex

2) Art

IF they are the same - you can play multiple games on one install
IF they are different - you can use different installs or different folders and copy the files each time you switch

Either way - and even in just one game - always shut down WITP and restart before executing a turn as Japan. This prevents the dreaded sync bug.

Uhhh ? [&:]
What's Pwhex ?
And: when you say to shut down witp and restart before executing a turn as japan, i assmume this mean: first load the PBEM file that your opponent send, shut down witp, and then open the file and execute it ....right ? Or you mean something else ?
(sorry if i sound really dumb...).

As long as you have plenty of hard drive space it is best to do multiple copies as described by rtrapasso. This prevents enormous amounts of confusion and technical problems.

I have all my WITP copies in a Matrix Games folder. To produce a new one, I just copy one of the old ones to my user directory, modify as desired, rename the file, then cut and paste back to the Matrix Games folder.

This way you always have the correct intel and combat reports when you switch between games. Also, by forcing you to close the game and restart when switching between games, you can avoid the sync bug as described by El Cid.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is. - Manfred Eigen

So, if i understand correctly (wich is not proven yet !).
1) i make a copy in a new folder for each game i have; that would mean, one for my AI game alone; one for any PBEM game.
2) each time i switch from, say, a PBEM game, to another game (PBEM or AI), i just have to close the game, and restart from the desired game folder ...right ?
3) in each folder, the saved file are independants from the other folders ..right again ?

Correct... i think for testing bugs in various versions i have 6 or 7 different versions of WITP on my machine... you can make different shortcuts for each, labelling them appropriately (i.e. - i had a CHS shortcut, 1.801 shortcut, 1.804, 1.806, 1.807a, 1.807b, and a couple of specialized shortcuts installed... i would use the appropriate ones depending on that i was testing... each mod had its own folder with separate art, etc.)

Even if you are playing 2 games of the same mod (or vanilla), it is a good idea to have separate folders - it helps to keep things from getting confused so that you don't send the turn for Fred to George, or vice versa.

If I understand this ight, your not talking of multiple INSTALLATIONS?

Your saying to Make one Installation

Then Create a Folder under Matrix Games?  Say Named Chs
and copying all the files and sub folders to that Chs folder?

Made Mod changes there, create a short cut to the Pacwar exe
and it can be run even through not installed and so not in OS registry?

Or Talking of Multiple Installations of game changing each Install so its matrix games /pacwar, Matrix games/ Chs  , etc?

The talk of just copying the one install and putting in a different folder has me wondering how the OS and game handles it especially saves etc...
without anything going into the original install's folders from the copy 9not installed) game in a different folder...

How about being more specific including  exactly the way the different folders are treed..

Seems to me  if WITP had been thought of being moddable  developers could have done what like Civ 4 does where have a single
install with a Mods sub folder and the game itself would load  at choice any mod choosen from the Mod sub folder...

Civ 3 and 4 make it easy to install mods without copying whole game to another folder since the Game executive can load mods from mod folder indtead of the vanilla game.. and all mods just go in mod folder in eachs own folder...

Yes - right - DO NOT DO MULTIPLE INSTALLATIONS - can result in serious problems.

Once installed, though, the proper changes ARE in the OS registry... you don't want MULTIPLE changes in the registry.
