What is wrong with Tojo?

Hello all. I am a Japanese player in my first PBEM to go past April '42. It is July 42 and I have been ramping up Ki44 production heavily in hopes to phase out all Ki43s by the end of the year. I am also building Ki61s. The debut of my first Ki44 Diatai was disapointing. The group I upgraded was not the best trained (high 60s) but I have similarly trained A6M2s that do much better in fighter vs. fighter combat. I lost 13 out of 36 on the first mission, mostly to Wildcats and Hurricane IIbs which is a bit irritating. I could understand loosing them to p38s but they should greatly out class wildcats and Hurries. The Ki44 is faster than these buckets (and the A6M) by about 50mph and has a much better rate of climb, so what is the deal? I guess they need more training.

Assuming you're playing stock - the Tojo is the best fighter versus fighter you get, until the Jack comes along, so you're using the right tool, and thus as you say you need some more training. Train 'em up to 75 or 80 and try again!

Experience is the key to winning air combat in WITP. 

If you train your Tojo's up to mid 70 to low 80 EXP you will kill Wildcats and Hurricanes by the dozen....

Your zero's most likely have a higher experience than your Tojo's and have thus performed better.

How much air action have you been invloved with over Burma/India (I'm assuming that's where you're using them).  By July 1942 the Hurricanes could easily be in the high 70s for experience.

This group is a bit low on exp but i have A6M groups that are of simmilar exp and they have done far better which is why i have been confused. More training

Have a look at your leaders, for fighters you need a high agression leader with good air skills....

We are playing CHS. The difference is that I feed my pilots a shot of tabasco sauce, a raw egg and ground up haberno peppers before each flight. That, and coming out of the sun, gives us an edge.

I don't know in my PBEM I am having better results with the Tony in even fighter vs fighter combat. For one reason or another my Tojo sentais and chutais "regualrly go on strike"...it seems they refuse to fly - while bobmers from the same base fly unescorted or Allied bombers strike their base ( and yes they have alll the other correct settings).
So even though it would appear that the Tojo is superior, they are sucking for me!

Try a more aggressive commander for your Tojo Sentai.

I do take extra care in sellecting leaders for my fighter groups, particularly fighter groups with the most modern aircraft. I think the main problem is that they weren't the best trained units. My army fighters took a beating in the spring and most of my (full) Ki43 groups that I am upgrading are in the mid 60s.
