RE: it goes on...
Yes, why not Russia.[:D] You showed such proficiency in China and India[&o], that your respectful readers expect something more everytime. It would be interesting, to say the least.[;)]ORIGINAL: castor troy

Very good news from Madras indeed. I hope your LCUs were not shredded by the defence there.
With India conquered, China subdued, and maybe (who know) no more USSR in Siberia, you might not be able to completely hold away the USN, but you'll have much more assets to use, from LCUs to aircraft, to supply, to shipping, more HI/ressources/oil, etc. You'll be hard to push back... and this foretells much fun for the readers.[:)]
ahh, so you recommend me to invade Russia also? [;)]
Knocking out India and therefore having this front secured until really late in the game when the US and Australian forces decide to retake it is a big advantage, no doubt. Knocking out China or better say reducing it into an area not big enough to supply the 100+ Chinese units is also a big advantage as you don´t have to fear the Chinese hordes breaking out sometime in 44. But all those troops on the continent in China and Mandchuko are restricted commands so even if I would completely conquer India, China and Russia - LOL - then I couldn´t use those units for a defense against the US and Aussie forces as I can´t lift those restricted command units out into a defensive line in the Pacific or SRA.
I will still be "stuck" with the Southern Area command div/bgd I have now and the reinforcements of course. And a couple of restricted command units I will buy out with political points. Supply will be plenty around I guess, also resources won´t be a problem. Oil still stays the same problem with my tankers being probably the bottleneck. The expected Allied bombing campaign against the Home Ilsands will still have nearly the same impact as if I wouldn´t conquer India as I´m only producing aircraft and engines in Japan. And aircraft/engines will probably be the numero uno target for the B-29.
The biggest advantage is to not having to fear the British/Indian offensive on Burma/Malaya in early 44.
Re: restricted command units, it's true most of those units would be stuck there. But base forces, artillery, engineers, tanks, etc, are much cheaper than infantry, and they can help much. All those air groups that would be released (at much lower cost) are also interesting, at least as ASW vigils.
Note, you're not forced to pay PP at full cost for every unit : when an LCU has many disabled squads, its cost is much lower (I wonder if disruption doesn't also reduce the cost, as it seems to be keyed on AV), so if towards the end of the fighting in India, China, and/or Siberia, you accumulate enough PP, you can have two or three times more units out of the restricted commands. Same goes for air groups : transfer them when they're not full.
Perhaps more tricky : if you bottled up the chinese corps in Chungking, set a full division or two to make a deliberate attack, or a shock attack. Hopefully, you'll get many disabled squads, and maybe a few destroyed squads, but the cost in PP will be greatly reduced - and after a bit or R&R in Shangai or Pekin, you'll have a full division at reduced cost (half PP, a bit of supply and a few armament points).[;)]
Well, just my two cents of newbie.[:)]

RE: it goes on...
I´ve already changed nearly all of my air units from China and Mandchuria into non restricted commands and am using them wherever they are needed.
And also ALL my tank units were bought out already, that´s why I´m using over a dozen in India! I´ve received two understrenght divisions that were also bought out and are now slooooowly building up, both cost me some 1000 pp.
This means I´m fairly low on pps at the moment. Base forces out of the restricted commands aren´t needed at the moment, I´ve got so many coming as reinforcement that I´ve got problems moving them out to the front due to not having enough lift capability as 80% of my shipping is still around Rangoon and Burma due to the India invasion. I bought out a couple of AA units though.
Art units aren´t that cheap, they cost something around 300-400 pp, considering that a whole div is around 3000 then it´s not worth it IMO as I don´t think that art units have the effect in WITP they should have, especially when being used against troops landing at a hostile beach. I could be wrongh though.
I know that it´s cheaper to buy out units that are mostly disabled but that´s somewhat gamey for me. If it´s an understrenght unit, ok, but if the unit is at full (or nearly full) strenght with lots of disablements then I don´t see the point why it should be cheaper as the unit will be 100% ready within 2 months at the latest. Building up a div from 30/30 to 100/100 takes nearly a year.
Good thoughts about the "wreck a division to buy it cheap" but as I´ve said, for me that´s an exploit.

That's your call on it, nobody else may make that decision.[:)] I only suggested this, seeing what Miller does at Manilla (ordering shock attacks to wipe his own units faster, to rebuild them from fragments).

we moved into the base yesterday, immediately ordering a shock attack as I was 100% sure to see level 9 forts and the only way to bring them down fast is with a shock attack. It was a gamble as there are three units West of Yenen on the road and I´m sure Miller ordered them to move into the base again. Would those troops have arrived, it could have become a bloody defeat but his troops didn´t make it and there were only two HQs, a base force and the two understrenght corps that were forced to retreat a couple of turns ago. Forts at level 3 and another shock attack tomorrow. If I´m lucky again, the enemy reinforcements will still be on the road, which would mean the base will fall tomorrow already. There´s nothing that could stop us from taking the Northern bases as Sian is cut off and there are only minor units left in the North that can move around.

we moved into the base yesterday, immediately ordering a shock attack as I was 100% sure to see level 9 forts and the only way to bring them down fast is with a shock attack.

Yeah, IIRC there should be two 9" CD guns grouped with over a dozen 6 inchers. Probably not that much supply at Trimcomalee.

that´s the downside of not including escorts, the sub attacks on the surface. Must be a lot of FOW in this attack as I doubt that the AP was hit by two torps as it´s only moderately damaged. Sys, flt and fire in the 30s, the ship has a good chance to make it into a level 9 port. Would Grouper be hit by 4x3 inch shells it would at least be burning so I guess this is alos just FOW... There´s also a MSW ASW TF in the hex... [>:]

hmmm... Miller learnt... a lot of those Mitchells are Dutch groups, couple of weeks ago they were still flying Martins so he figured out he should upgrade them to those durable medium bombers. Well, Miller took once again the advantage of the feature that he can see my aircraft transfers and attacked this base immediately after he spotted the dark airfield symbol. Don´t know if it was an advantage today though.
Just look at the damage rate the Allied bombers took and then look at the op losses further below... [8|][8|][8|] When my bombers fly 2 hexes without any defensive fire then half a dozen crash constantly even though they are very experienced. We damage 100+ Mitchels that are flying at absolute max range and hey... 1 lost to ops... [>:] at least 9 more were going down on the way home, accounted as a2a kill
we were quite lucky not to lose more Oscars on the ground it seems and in total we lose 5 pilots today. The good thing is that the bomber morale must be totally trashed and I don´t really fear to see them coming back anytime soon.

RE: it goes on...
And here´s the unit that was cut to pieces this turn. It started out the day with 99/102 and is now at 70/98!!! This means no more fighting for this unit for the next 8 weeks. In 8 months of war, none of my major ground units has been hit in one day like this one, the unit lost over 50% of it´s combat strenght in one day.

it´s the usual cat and mouse play with the Allied having the ability to see aircraft transfers and the Japanese having to guess which airfield to attack out of a dozen. In this case I pretty much knew how this turn will look like and I ordered the attack on Colombo. As Colombo staged 100 Allied medium bombers with 40 Hurricanes on Cap yesterday, Miller knew I would bomb this base today, so he moved out all his bombers (with a couple of damaged bombers left behind) and moved in 4 or 5 dozen Hurricanes more to fly Cap. I don´t just want to destroy the medium bomber force but of course also the Allied fighters in India, so here we go. Unfortunately for us, parts of the attacking formations failed to locate the target and so only 60 out of 80 fighters and nearly all bombers arrived over the target meeting a pretty high number of fighter bombers on Cap. The Hurricanes are still far less effective than our high exp fighters but the only reason for that is the fact that Miller avoided every fight he could in the last months, therefor it´s still like in the opening month of the war. The enemy Cap still achieves a 1:3 a2a which isn´t that bad IMO, my Oscar sentai lost 25% of their veteran crews and this is what makes our fighter sentais being far less dangerous in no time.
IMO Miller just took on the fight far too late, my airforce could be far less dangerous already would he have taken on the fight earlier and would he have tried to fight on his terms, not mine. And that is possible for the Allied also early on.
In the end we destroyed a lot of Hurricanes today and a couple of such engagements more and the Allied resistance in the air will be totally broken.

Have spotted some Spits recently over Karachi but only in very small numbers. IMO it´s too late for the Allied in India to fight for air supremacy. So I guess all those spits from the pool will show up in Australia. Northern Australia has some 600-800 aircraft I guess, all four bases seem to be fully stacked.

Yup, he could have used about 300 of them a month ago. With all the variables involved and considering how important ground support is to combat in urban hexes, if he had them I doubt it would have slowed you down enough to stall you before you got to Karachi (assuming, of course, that you will[;)]) but your a/c losses would have been much more severe. Regardless of how costly it would have been, taking India will save you a huge amount of a/c in the long run.

There was only one right moment to use ALL of his aircraft in India: when the invasion began! Like I´ve mentioned earlier, KB can´t fight two or three land bases for more than one day and the carriers are very fragile as the one succesful attack on KB with Wellingtons showed. With the force I´ve brought to India Miller only had a real chance IMO during the first days of the invasion and the days I had to bring in the desperately needed supplies. And of course it didn´t help him to evacuate the whole Royal Navy. IMO another mistake as the RN ships can easily stand the fight against the Japanese ships and as soon as KB would be forced to retreat due to ongoing air attacks I would have also retreated most of my other ships.
I´ve only lost O N E ship during my invasion! It was the DD that was lost attacking the 4 RN PT boats. Miller just didn´t want to risk losses in aircraft it seems and therefor he lost India. Of course it could have been also that he lost a lot of ac and still lose India but in that case I guess a lot of IJN ships would be reefs now also, not to talk about how my KB daitais would look like.
I agree, taking India will save me hundreds, no, thousands of ac in the long run.
As it looks now, Miller has brought all his ships from India to Perth, including masses of aircraft as Perth shows a dark port and aircraft symbol. The four Northern Australian bases are bristling with aircraft also and Miller just asked me if our stacking hr goes for total ac at a base or if ac that are stood down don´t count. [:D] Well, it´s about total ac at the base of course, otherwise this would totally negate the effects of stacking limits. IMO the Allied counterattack will come out of Northern Australia directly into the area around Timor. It´s the shortest way into important areas of the Empire but I can alos guarantee that it will be far bloodier then Miller will expect it to be. I will throw in the Kitchen sink against every attempt to attack in this area and my most important advantage will be the fact that I will have a dozen bases to support each other. He can surely advance but the question will be at what cost of ships, especially at what costs of aircraft carriers.
Wearing down the enemy carrier TFs with LBA and then throw in KB after two days is nowhere working better than in the area North of Timor. And damaged ships could go back to Soerabaja which will have a nav HQ, ARs and a level 9 port. This should give me a nice advantage.

And from Soerabaja, you're close to Singapore's repair yard. Speaking of repair yards, there're a few in India too, some 80-100 if memory serves well, so I suppose this will be useful to you too, for non-priority repairs.

there´s a very small one at Colombo, one small one at Bombay and a small one at Karachi. All of them won´t be of much use I guess as it won´t be worth sending a damaged ship that far. I´ve got more than enough repair yards in Japan where I have increased the ones at Osaka and Tokyo for repairs on major ships and the one at Nagoya which is homeport of the merchant shipping in Japan.
Repair yards are most times only really useful for smaller ships, AKs, APs, DDs to perhaps CLs. For BBs and CVs those repair yards don´t really help a lot, you just see a damaged BB sitting with 600 repair points alone at Osaka and none of the repair points are used. Perhaps it´s speeds up the repairs with 2-3 points of sys damage a month for BBs or CVs.
When you have enough repair points from a ship repair yard at a port to meet the durability of the ship there then there´s only a die roll if one sys point is repaired. If not, the repair points are accumulated.
