Different styles of play?

Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge is a turn-based strategy that puts you command of a squad of specialists for hire in the genre’s biggest game-world yet: the African country Diamond Coast. Diamond Coast is a playground for the cruel and corrupt, each with their own agenda. Choose your friends wisely and buy an army of ruthless mercenaries to unleash mayhem on your foes. Choose “jobs” from different factions and complete them for cash to upgrade your weapons and hire more elite soldiers of fortune.

Different styles of play?

Post by SlickWilhelm »

I was just wondering what the different styles of play that people are using, or if we're all doing the same thing. For instance, I've long ago given up pistols and sub-machine guns and all of my mercs are now armed with assault rifles or sniper rifles. I also don't use silencers or stealth tactics. Instead, I use slides, lasers & collimeter sights.

In the early game(on easy difficulty), I used one merc squad, usually six mercs. During the mid-game, I used two squads of four mercs each, which seemed to offer a good balance of challenge and cost-savings. I'm now in the later stages of the game, and I'm still using two squads of mercs, but increased to five members each.

During the late early game, I was very poor and I tended to use all Russian weapons because of the abundance of free ammo found on the battlefield. Once I captured the Airport, my financial situation improved dramatically, and I was able to buy upgrades and really start generating income. Thus, in the late mid-game and in the late game, I'm able to shop for the latest exotic weapons on Dickie Jay's each day.

Is anyone out there still using shotguns, pistols & sub-machine guns in the mid or late stages of the game?

How about different types of armor? Is everyone dressing their mercs in the most advanced armor, or do you go for "style points" by wearing colorful berets and the various garb that one accumulates?

interesting idea, but overall, would say, got to do what the game is willing to let you do

as I find Slides, I use them, those go to my gunners, same as Armor, as I find it, or have enough, then I upgrade, my Snipers tend to stay light, my rushers, tend to get heavy

this game to start, made one squad, get the first 3 zones, end of day, form a 2nd squad, idea was to split them, but most times still use them together

one squad was rifles the other SMGs (4 M-1s, 1 Mini 14, 1 M-16) the 2nd was different SMGs (with 2 back up shot guns)

then as goodies come up, I tend to upgrade, just took the Airport, got 2 MG's, 1 Sniper Rifle, 1 guy still carries a SMG and Dragon still got his tricked out Shotgun

Morah just gave up her Uzi (needed her Strength) Bizon normally would of got it, but I have him hauling one of the new fancy rocket launchers

I just got a new fancy Sniper Rifle, but got it as a 2ndary weapon for one of my lesser shooters, I got a M-14, my Sniper got a good rifle, Digger has a MG, Morah has a MG, so all of my good gunners are in use (Vemon has a assult sniper weapon)

I am just now starting to make some money, take the Mines soon, and then will bring in a 3rd Squad (2 is HARD to attack and defend at the same time)

team is (depending on wounded, teams keep changeing around)

I started on the easy level, attacked with a single team of 4, then increased to 5 and finally 6. I got some money by finding the finance minister. Then more money by capturing the Dam, Train Station and Airport. Only bought one mercenary squad once used as grenade baits to help defending the cross road.

Once you have the airport you can move anywhere and can always ferry your squad around to defend places so never hired any static defence. Then I hired another 2 mercs and split up my teams into 2 of 4. Then 2 of 5 rotating their attacks and captured the mine.

I always look at my finance to make sure I have positive daily cash flow after shopping and hiring.

My alter ego wears a bandana and camo vest, no armour and sports a M-79 grenade launcher with 12pack ammo and twin python revolvers. He doesn't do much fighting other than lob in a few grenade occassionally but spends a bit of time at the end of each battle finishing off wounded survivers with his trusty pythons. He is a nasty piece of work and is now in the post-betrayal stage where he's on the side of the dictator as a powerful warlord in the country receiving regular threatening emails from Janus.

My character is now the real power in the country he has recaptured the airport and travels around escorted by a posse of heavily armed mercenaries.

His merc buddies are invariable dressed in full assult armour. 3 squads with a M-60 gunner set to 3 round burst, and a sniperin in each team. Everyone else in the squad are armed with FN-Minimis with boxed ammo.

<SPOILTER ALTER...>
Once you change sides to work for the dictator, Janus' mercenaries will drop lots of FN-Minimis and 5.56mm ammo when they die. I have so many Minimis and ammo that I can't even be bothered to go and pick up the one at the port on the warship.

Not sure if it's a bug in the game or just the model the new political reality. When you first switch sides, the dictator will tell you that Janus is already dead from an "accident" long ago. In the easy setting he will offer you 500 grand to fight for him.

And if you return to the Palace map and talk to him again later on, he will say the same thing again and give you another 500k. This is a great source of income. It's almost as if you are blackmailing him constantly. So now, whenever I need some cash I simply send a runner with high leadership to see the dictator and he will just cough up the cash over and over.

This game is modelling real life...
<END SPOILTER ALTER...>

Have fun, this game certainly is given me lots of surprises and I still haven't seen all of it yet. Simply fantastic I say.

zhanga, is it possible to play it through and stay "loyal" to Janus? To do so, do I need to go to the Butsi village and kill everyone there instead of releasing the Shaman as I promised to do so?

Sarge, you've played through this before, right? So this is your second time through? Which difficulty level are you on now?

Not sure about that Slick. Though I think you can kill the dictator there and then and then watch youself get killed by Janus' men to end the game if you stay loyal to Janus.

This is my first time through and I thought it was just your run-of-the-mill-kill-everyone JA story until I found out about the plot twists half way through. Before I had captured all of the places for Janus and the Butsi. So I decided to go straight to the Palace to chat to the dictator and switch sides to get access to the marauder sites as well.

I think if you save the Shaman for the Butsi you'd cross Janus too. Then you will be fighting both the Dictator and Janus. Not exactly a bad thing considering all the FN-Minimis I own now :) And that Butsi village will be a bitch to attack with its trail of narrow brighes. Good thing I think their warriors were only armed with AKSes the last time I saw them.

But anyway, I think there are many plot twists in the game. You may have to play it through a few times to get the complete story. And maybe some of the story hasn't been fully implemented in the game. For example the UN camp doesn' seem to do anything and places like the south village and must have a link to the Butsi story but doesn't seem to be implemented. Anyway I hope the full story can come out with some patching or modding in future. Right now though, I'm busy just making profits in an African civil war, too much art imitating life... :)

Slick

I made it past the Turn around, and got the Airport back, then the new mod came out, so I restarted, I still on easy :)

just picked up my 3rd Squad, Dump, Caster, his brother, Lin and Ghost, only Dump has seen any action yet, that will change soon, as aother attack is coming to the vill (hate that map)

(last time, the enemy out flanked me (well, I set up wrong) and had a nice tuff little battle, with my pinned and flanked squad)

So, there are three paths you can take?
1) You start working for Janus and finish killing the Dictator. It ends with Janus killing you.
2) You start working for Janus and switch to Dictators side. It ends with???
3) You start working for Janus and switch to Butsi side. It ends with???

then the new mod came out

Which mod is that? I'm not playing with any mods right now, only the first patch.

Edit: Nevermind, I see that it must be Reinforced's excellent looking mod that you must be using. :)

I believe you can also join the marauders. I have not tried it yet. I assume if you do you fight Janus-Butsi-Dictator.... Makes sense. I remember reading posts here telling a way to join them. You make your first deal with the thugs at the Safari, then follow the story from there. I think it was posted that after you capture the diamond mine you have access to the marauder camp and hand the mine over to them. Then you get the location to the pirate island.

I am only telling this from memory of reading this forum.

I suppose there's also a fourth path: Kill everything is sight and see what happens. I think some people have done this by killing the strikers at the mine.

I think this game has 5 ending possible.

1. I am playing this route now! (Want to see ending)

2. I already finish it. It ends with you having beer at paradise Island and dictators send waitress to kill you but you are aware of that.

3. Not trying yet since you will have to fight with ditator and Jenus Merc. It 's sound hard.

4. You can work for marauders too at the safari choose to help them kill civilian. Not trying yet

5. Kill all of faction, betray Jenus, kill Butsi, Kill ditators and marauders ( I like to try this way very interesting)

Does rescuing the Shaman mean that you've betrayed Janus? If so, does that mean you'd have to go back to the Butsi village and kill them after you've betrayed Janus and been celebrated as a hero by the Butsi?

The reason I don't know about this is because even though I've liberated the South Military Base, I didn't find the Shaman there, and haven't gone back to the Butsi village yet.

- I not sure about it, not trying it yet. Anyway when I rescued Shaman and go back to Butsi Village Maybe I can choose to accept gift and fire gun at Chief let them start fighting. This way, I think I can kill butsi and betray Jenus.

- first, capture trainstation then after battle come back talk with Loius then go to Station manager to low the fare. You will unlock busti village. Go to Village and talk to the chief you get Shaman rescue quest, don't watse time to long hurry to capture airport then use helo ability to capture Military Training base near Palace. Last cell door you will find Shaman.

Right, I've done all that except that I didn't find the Shaman in the last cell door. I wonder if he'll still be there if I've already left the battle.

I see there are 4 ending videos in \Hired Guns\basis\video folder. They can be opened with "rad video tools".
Two are already mentioned (Janos guy kills you, Dictator sends a waitress to kill you) and there are two similar ones where you are the president?!
