Curious

On the intro screen for this UV website, the aircraft on the Japanese carrier seem to be positioned facing aft. Is that right? Or is it an error? And if it's correct, can someone explain why?

Thanks

Probably correct

You mean the top down picture of the Japanese carrier that serves as a backdrop to the menu choices for the Matrix UV page? The one that shows some aircraft with one wing folded aimed inboard and aft on either side of the aft elevator?

I think when the goal of aircraft placement is just storage, that anything goes re: aircraft orientation. It looks like this carrier has the forward part of the flight deck cleared for aircraft launching and is storing the aircraft in question aft, either for subsequant launching or preparing to take them below to the hangar deck.

Another factor that would have affected placement was that as taildraggers, they would have been towed tail first by a towbar or attachment connected to the small tailwheel at the rear of the aircraft.

So as a "could have been" depiction of a Japanese carrier, I think it passes muster. Whether it was a common practice, though, I'll let some else comment who's more knowlegable about Japanese carrier operational practices.

IM could stand for International Master, as used by F.I.D.E. in chess.

Sounds good to me! :D

Thanks for your candid response Marc. I couldn't recall ever seeing the planes spotted facing aft in photographs and just wondered if there was some hitherto unknown (to me at least) reason for doing so.

I am always in such a hurry to get to the game that I dont notice anything. I just keep clicking the mouse and saying "come on, come on" until in says "your files are being organized". Its like the mouse giving himself a dose of cocaine or morphine, he just keeps clicking the button!!! On the weekend I get up at 5 am and say "I will just play a few turns to start the day out". Next time I notice, its 7 pm. (i do go out for a few walks, however, to think over strategy).

Hmmm. Maybe my alter ego should be IMBrandi, with a nice pic or something. Maybe I could even get my precious mine warfare ideas implemented.
