Post by Footslogger »

Hello. How much should I increase Armanent production on the first day? What happens when you increase Armanent production?

Rabbit is good.

You are playing the Japanese I imagine?  Raise the small plants and build-up about 150 points to start with.

I doubt you will. Let me tell you a story of logistical incompetance.

At the beginning of my PBEM game I thought i would need to increase my arm production so I gradually increased it to 667[&:] As of now, 31 Jan 43 I have 114484 arm pts. With the introduction of tracker 1.5 and the chart I suddenly realised that arm production at that rate would give me a total of 357939 arm pts over the next 365 days. Considering that I only need 50341 arm pts for my reinforcement and I need 18533 for total replacements to active units its a little overkill. Thats appoximately 5.3 times that needed.

In my defense I should say i was not using tracker when i started and found it extremely difficult to judge but I have been useing 1.4 for a while and still did not work until I saw the chart. A picture speaks... Needless to say I'm adjusting armament production and also vehicle production as well. You live and learn[&:]

I've found you don't need to increase Armament production - unless you are taking a lot of casualties in an aggressive ground war in the CBI.

I find that it is more important to at least double the starting Vehicle production

I find that increasing vehicles to about 120 is fine for early war (until the tank divisions arrive).  After that, production can be shut off and turned on as needed.

I think that armaments increased to about 500 (which is where is set it) is too high.  I keep a comfortable pool and keep production shut off.

Question on Armanent Settings for 1st turn

Post by Footslogger »

Well yes, I am the Japanese and I guess what I want is the cost of expanding the Armanents? I would like to have all my LCU's arrive in full strength. And is it normal to start over and over agian with the 1st turn? What would be some of your tactics as far as where to send land, air and naval units?[&o][&o][&o]

Question on Armanent Settings for 1st turn

Post by Footslogger »

I'm sorry.  I meant in general as to the tactics.  One thing came to mind, why do LCU's have casualties when they land at an island with no enemy troops there?  I know, maybe someone can send me their saved 1st turn game file to me so I can study it.  Mike has my email address so...

Now I know why you call yourself "Footslogger."

But seriously, if you want this kind of advice, spend a few hours playing and then browsing the threads here, then ask about specific matters. This is not a question that can be answered intelligently.

Not all of them will. Most dont because of scenario design, not arms availability.

On occasion, it may be useful to receive a ground reinforcement at 1/3 strength if you want to change it's HQ. It'll cost a lot less PPs.

When I started the game for the first time (grand campaign of course) I started making spreadsheets of all the ground, air and naval units by HQ. That was after I woke up after passing out. I was deployed and in isolation (no access to the forum) so I had lots of time to create the sheets. That was the only way I was able to organize.

For land units, I identified what was available for offensive missions and hid the rest of the units. I then listed all the bases I wanted to take and plotted out which unit would take which base and in what order. That was just the combat units. Then I decided what airfields would support each attack and what support units were needed at each airfield. That forced me to adjust my invasion priorities. Basically, in the SRA, I invade based on where I need the next level 4 airfield as a jump-off to the next series of invasions. But I also invaded to deny bases to the enemy (either port or airfield, or both). I would never leave an enemy level 4 airfield in my rear. Many other insignificant bases were left to the mop up forces that came later.

Ok, now I have my combat forces plotted and my support units plotted. Now I assigned LBA to each phase of the attack and stage it to where it is needed. Next I needed to assign ships, both combat and merchant, for the attacks. You'll note that many ships and land units are out of position on 7 Dec 41. I use the special first turn naval hyper-move to move to move my ships and ground units to where they need to be so the real invasions can be organized on 8 Dec 41.

I actually go so far as to assign naval combat units to regions (SRA, SE Fleet, 4th Fleet, etc.).

I usually have some 230-250 TFs moving around on 7 Dec.

And then there's production......

Confusing, isn't it? [;)] [:D]

I am doing basically the same as Mike Solli, but as Allies - which I dont need to be done on turn 1.

I am always starting with Air forces in each area. I organize them, attach them to bases, also looking for arrivals to 180 or so days. Add Base Forces for Aviation Support.

Then I am continuing with Ground forces. Which bases have to be garrisoned, which to be defended, which are staging areas for reserves.

The last one on my list are Naval forces. I prefer to keep nationalities together, so RN operates the Indian Ocean, KLM in DEI and later Australia, RAN+RNZN Australia and New Zealand, USN the rest. So from the first turn the ships are slowly transfered to their respective area (as escorts, or damaged ships). Later I begin to form the navys into Divisions and Squadrons (preferably of the same class). Navy Squadrons and divisions could be combined at wish to whatever purpose they are needed. The last thing I am doing is creating escort groups.

As allies you do not need to worry about everything from turn 1. Just begin with what is necessary:
China, Malaya, Philipines, DEI, Burma.
Later continue in India, Australia, Pacific Islands, Alaska, ...

Hmm, in my current game as Japan against the AI, I forgot to set replacements to "off" for turn 1, and that seems to have sucked away thousands of armament points. I suppose I was filling out squads doing garrison duty in backwaters like Manchuria? Since then I did decide to make modest increases in armaments production, mostly just expanding the smallest factories once.

As for "casualties" in unopposed beach landings: as I understand it, these are disablements and disruption, not actual losses, but I could be wrong.
