Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting light Jap air activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is. A slight increase in Jap air patrols at Pago Pago - Jap aircraft reported there include G3M Nell, G4M Betty, B6N2 Jill (land-based), H8K Emily. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW in the above locations.

Light Jap air patrols reported by U.S. subs operating off Japanese home islands. SS Steelhead in the East China Sea reports a contact with a Jap AP - this attack is a synch bug but does point out Pillager is still moving LCU by sea from China. AAR follows.

A stack of six unidentified Jap LCU's were detected on the rail line outside Magwe - these LCU either moving into Magwe or moving south from Magwe. Several Allied air units have been dispatached on (hopefully independent) ground attack missions to attack and identify as many of the Jap LCU as possible in the stack.

F-5A recon over Rangoon reports 3 Jap TF's, 1 ship disbanded in port, 612 aircraft (243 fighters, 88 bombers), 9 Jap LCU's, heavy industry 55(138), resource production 100(1). Appears that Pillager has concentrated in Rangoon most Japanese air units operating in the Burma theatre.

Summary of Operations 8/17/43

Update on Operation Gemini:

U.S. Carrier force main body is now operating from Palmyra (also location of HQ South Pacific) - this base the location from which carrier forces will eventually move forward to support Operation Gemini.

Plane upgrades for USN CV and CVL-based squadrons continue, as many upgrades as possible will be completed as time and the replacement aircraft pool allows. VF squadrons on CV Hornet & CVL Cowpens upgrading to F6F Hellcats. With this upgrade, all CV's now operating F6F's. Only two CVL are still operating F4F Wildcats. All CVE fighter squadrons continue operating F4F's. No immediate plans to upgrade CVE squadrons to F6F before Operation Gemini is launched - not enough F6F in the replacement pool to do these and still allow for replacement of CV and CVL combat losses.

Formation of CVE task forces is underway - nine CVE's are currently available (with one additional CVE in repair on the U.S. west coast). Plan is to form three CVE task forces which will operate stacked together with the invasion fleet(s). Primary functions of CVE task forces will be to provide (1) close-in fighter CAP over the invasion fleet, and (2) ground attack air support for LCU in the landing force. Projected composition of CVE task forces is 3 CVE with escorting destroyers. CVE task forces with the invasion fleet(s) will enable the Carrier force main body (CV & CVL) to strictly engage the KB and Jap surface naval TF's.

A large force of U.S. submarines (20-30 subs) is also planned to operate in conjunction with Operation Gemini. These subs will operate as a "saturation patrol" in the sea areas to the N and NW of Pago Pago and Canton Is.

Many LCU available or planned to operate in Operation Gemini are already located or now arriving at the forward departure base. Arriving LCU's are disembarking temporarily to recover elements disabled in transit. All major LCU earmarked for Operation Gemini are at or near 100% prepped for their designated objectives. Current LCU assignments are as follows, note that some changes and additions are now under consideration as well.

While Japanese activity near Canton Is remains mostly light, there have been several recent reports of Jap (transport) TF's spotted arriving at Canton. This will continue to be monitored. I am suspecting that Pillager is reinforcing Canton Is with the expectation that it is the main target of a U.S. offensive. With this in mind, I am considering the option of using my preparations for attacking Canton Is as a "decoy" (much as the Channel coast in France was used to draw German forces away from Normandy) while retaining the ability to launch a real attack on Canton either immediately or later on.

I added Tongatapu to the mix as this island is a "flanking" position to Pago Pago and with Tongatapu under U.S. control it also would be possible to shift part of the U.S. to Australia/NZ shipping route northward (which would shorten it).

Known disposition of Japanese LCU's is as follows.

Pago Pago (7 LCU detected) - including 52 Naval Gd, 1 AA Regiment
Savaii (4 LCU detected) - including 5 NLF, 127 IJAAF Base Force
Upolu (3 LCU detected) - including 42 & 61 Naval Gd, 140 IJN Base Force

Canton Is (13 LCU detected) - including South Seas Det, 43 Naval Gd, 18 Reserve & 6 Coastal Gun Rgts, 24 Aviation Unit, four Construction Bns
Gardner Is (7 LCU detected) - including 144 IJNAF Base Force, six Construction Bns
Sydney Is (no detected LCU) - however intel data places 21 NLF and five Construction Bns on Sydney Is

Information available from known intel data tracking Jap divisions makes it unlikely that a division-size LCU is present in either the Pago Pago or Canton Is area. However, the possibility of this is not being excluded.

Some information on Japanese LBA at Pago Pago and Canton Is is available from contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese aircraft. G3M Nell and B6N2 Jill planes have continuously operated from Pago Pago, G4M Betty from Canton Is, with long range naval search (H8K Emily) flying from both locations. With the network of available Japanese air bases in the Pacific, it would be a rather simple matter for Pillager to quickly dispatch Japanese LBA reinforcements to Canton or Pago Pago from elsewhere in the Pacific. I'm not expecting Japanese fighter CAP to be particularly heavy over either Canton or Pago Pago, especially given the large number of IJA fighters operating over Burma, China, and NW Australia and that it would take longer to transfer (by air) fighter planes into Canton or Pago Pago given their shorter range as compared to bombers.

Aircraft upgrades continuing on U.S. CV's and CVL's. VT squadron on CV Wasp upgrading to TBM Avengers. Two CV's (Essex, Bunker Hill) and two CVL still operate TBF's. VB squadron on CV Enterprise upgraded to SB2C Helldivers. Four CV-based VF squadrons now operate SB2C's, all other CV and CVL-based VB squadrons still have SBD-5's.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs report no sightings of Jap air activity near Kwajalein or Canton Is area. Summary of Operations 8/20/43

Preparations for Operation Gemini continue. Three CVE task forces formed and departed Pearl Harbor - each CVE task force composed of 3 CVE's, one Omaha CVL (flagship), and 10-11 escorting DD's. CVE TF's are intended to provide aircraft operating as CAP over the invasion TF's and also for close-support airstrikes against ground, naval, or other targets as needed.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting very light Jap air patrols near Kwajalein (G5N Liz, H8K Emily, B6N2 Jill), quiet near Canton Is.

SS Porpoise reports contact with Jap ASW TF near Kwajalein. SS Grayback engages Jap transport TF at Canton Is. AAR's follow.

Increased Jap air patrols detected at Pago Pago (mainly G4M Betty, also G3M Nell & B6N2 Jill). Pillager may be putting Jap forces on the alert in this location. Planning for Operation Gemini is operating on the premise that Japanese opposition at the attack locations will be heavy, alerted, and that Jap reinforcements (including surface naval and the KB) will be readily available. I'm expecting Pillager to be very active in defending the Japanese outer perimeter.

SS Pogy at Truk reporting several contacts with D4Y Judy air patrols.

South Pacific: Most sectors reporting quiet. Transport shipping between the U.S and Australia/NZ moving normally in both directions.

U.S. 40th Infantry Division arrived and now disembarking in Sydney. 40th Division is the first U.S. division-size LCU arriving in Australia - other U.S. divisions in SW Pacific command are in the "main" Eastern Pacific theatre for Operation Gemini. Initial plans for 40th Division were to send this unit to Tennant Creek. An alternate plan is being considered to form an Allied "kampfgruppe" with 40th Division and several Australian infantry units plus tanks and artillery for a ground offensive against the Japanese base at Portland Roads (NE Australia).

Central Pacific: U.S. subs again reporting decreased Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, at Pago Pago. Quiet in Canton Is area.

No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW in any of the above locations.

Jap AK Tokeisan Maru confirmed sunk - this ship torpedoed by SS Grayback at Canton Is on 8/20.

Sigint report entry for 8/24 indicates 142 IJNAF Base Force now located in Kavieng. This unit is a new LCU in the Japanese OOB.

Australia: USAAF and Australian heavy bombers and escorts attack Jap airfield in Daly Waters. AAR follows.

Escorting fighters in this action were also intended to serve as a "fighter sweep" to engage and destroy as many as possible of the Japanese fighter planes based in Daly Waters. P-38 fighters were particularly effective in this role. USAAF 20th Fighter Squadron (P-40N's) had heavy pilot losses (12 pilots) in this action - oddly enough no P-40N's from 20 Squadron were destroyed (?). Only one other pilot was lost from other Allied fighter squadrons in this action.

Summary of Operations 8/26/43

VT squadron on CVL Cabot upgrading to TBM's - with this upgrade, only one VT squadron with the U.S. carrier force main body (CV Bunker Hill) still operating TBF Avengers.

A celebrity arrives at the front to join the war effort - Ensign Rocket J. Squirrel reported today to his new squadron after completing advanced pilot training at Pensacola. After a brief orientation with the squadron commander, Ensign Squirrel is meeting with his squadron mates and familiarizing himself with life in his new surroundings.

China: Jap recon flights over Chungking and Tuyun.

Allied air situation in China remains difficult with supply situation and a shortage of SB2c and Il-4c replacement bomber planes. All Chinese bomber squadrons except one have been withdrawn from front line service and transferred by air to rear-area bases in India. 30 CAF Squadron loaded its nine pilots (average experience 91) aboard its only remaining SB-2c bomber and flew off to Delhi - other Chinese SB-2c squadrons not having more than 2 or 3 planes left with a full or almost-full complement of highly experienced pilots. Chinese SB-2c squadrons all upgrade to B-25J Mitchells (available 12/43).

Nearly all Chinese fighter squadrons now converted to P-40N's - most of these squadrons now located in Kweiyang as air ops from Chungking base is almost impossible at this time.

Chinese replacement pilot pool is also nearly depleted.

Summary of Operations 8/29/43

Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting very light Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, quiet near Canton Is. D4Y Judy and F1M2 Pete air patrols reported by SS Pogy at Truk.

3 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein.

Pillager remains on the alert at Pago Pago, Jap air patrols active. Plane types include G3M Nell, G4M Betty, B5N2 Jill, E13A1 Jake & F1M2 Pete floatplanes.

SS Grayback spots five unidentified Jap TF's at Canton Is. also in several engagements against Jap surface ships. AAR's follow.
