Evaporating LCU Fragments

Post by Oldguard1970 »

I rescued a fragment so I could rebuild a trapped LCU later. The fragment made it to a well supplied base, (Darwin). I left it there for several turns (replacements off) waiting for the parent to be eliminated. Then I noticed the fragment had disappeared.

I double checked to ensure I had not loaded the fragment to send it onward. I hadn't.
Darwin had not been attacked, so it was not a combat loss.

Any ideas about why this happened or how to prevent it? I am guessing I should have turned the replacements on right away, but I am puzzled about what would make a fragment evaporate.

Not that it's much consolation to you, but I've had the same thing happen once or twice. Seems to only happen to VERY small fragments ( like from a one or two sub evac ), and with the replacements off. In my cases I was trying to move a previously static unit that had lost it's CD guns, and didn't want it to get it's guns replaced on a road in the middle of nowhere. Not much you can do about it except to evac more of the unit, turn replacements on, and keep your fingers crossed. Good Luck - Quixote.

It depends how the parent unit is eliminated... usually fragments will stick around if the unit is eliminated in land combat, however, if the parent unit starves, usually all the fragments vanish as well.

You can also have everyone vanish due to the air transport bug.

Hi Bob and Quixote,

Thanks for your insights.  I have another fragment that I will try to keep around by turning replacements on.  It is small, but not puny.  As the parent loses size and approaches starvation, the fragment should be promoted to parent and survive... (I hope.)

Make sure the fragment is also at a base where there is plenty of supply.  I landed a bunch of sub evacuated fragments at Darwin in an AI game and tried to march them to Sydney.  They ran out of supply in the middle of the Outback and were eliminated.  Larger units can sustain some squad/gun losses to lack of supply, but if you already only have 2 squads in the unit, it doesn't take many losses to lose the whole fragment.

If a base runs out of supply, what happens to the units? I have Buno cut off and was wondering what would happen to the units left there.

Thanks

They wither and die slowly...

You can airdrop supplies to fragments out of supplies in the middle of nowhere in order to keep them alive. I even do this with parent formations which have been forced out of base hexes into the countryside. I keep them alive by airdropped supply while they are marching overland to the closest friendly base or being picked up by subs.[/align]
