Invisible troops

Post by Ratz »

Version 1.8.06
Scenerio: War in the Pacific (full)

I am currently playing Japan against the computer. On 5-26-43 I caputured Chungking 420,000 troops against 120,000 allied troops. The map shows Chungking with a Japanese flag and no Allied units in it but I still have the option to launch attacks. When I do it states there are 180,000 allied troops in the hex. I can not move my troops out of the hex either since it still thinks enemy units are there. I have tried loading and replying the turn but the same thing always happens. I even tried loading in as the allies and the allies show no allied units in the hex either.

Any suggestions on how to salvage this. I hate to see a game this far in have to be abandoned.

You have encountered the "Ghost Troops of Chungking" - a well known and annoying bug... i think the usual solution is to kill them all again. [:@]

I think that to march out of the base, ensure that the destination hex is another base. Once your troops move one hex they can then be given new orders.

Yes - although, i am not sure how the "ghost troops" act if you leave the hex... there is a worry that they could reconquer the city, allowing any accumulated Chinese reinforcements to show up.

I had it happen in my PBEM. As long as you leave a garrison the ghost units will not bother you. If you attack them you will suffer losses (and score points for the Allies) but not score any points for killing invisable Allied LCUs.

To move troops out of Chingking you only need to assign them a base to move to. They will not move to a non base hex.

Just as a note, if you capture Russian bases prior to 8/45 the Russian LCUs will still appear at the bases you captured and can attack.

All too true. Curiously, the original DOS version WITP had somewhat the same flaw, allowing Allied reinforcements to spawn at Calcutta even after its capture by JA. Those could be destroyed, whereas the Ghost army cannot, unless you let it retake an empty Chungking, then rekill it?

Also, if you capture Chungking and Chengtu remains in Chinese hands, all the respawned corps that surrendered at Chungking will emerge there 30 days later and swarm down on Chungking. It's actually a bit scarry to see, especially if you have since marched off to the east!

Thanks for the help. Marching out works. You can not kill them they just keep coming back. The only bad thing was that the way enemy forces were arranged I had to march back to the east insted of pressing fowrd. Oh well it will just take an extra month or two to finish off China.
