Multi-Part Buildings

Post by RyanCrierie »

So.....I've had a certain building on my plate for a while, and I'm wondering how to handle it. DOing it as a single large building would not allow the brutal fighting that took place within it in May 1945.

However, cutting it up into pieces would mean it would be very hard to place -- but probably not as bad as it sounds, since it would only appear on one map.

What are your opinions?

Do it as seperate buildings

Have you ever worked in sketchup before. That program is just the killer app for doing architecture. There is a DX exporter for it now as well. The only thing it doesn't do is UVW unwraps (so you would still need to texture in another app like max or milkshape) and bones, but in terms of speed of building new achitecture I don't think anything out there beats it.

My wife who is seriously computer phobic planned out and built in walk around 3D about 3 different potential houses in just one afternoon. She just loves it!

Of course if you are a max guru, well then stick with what you know, but if you are starting out seriously consider SU.

I was contemplating doing this one at a later date, so I'm glad you will do it sooner (and better). To really do it right, I was going to do the Kroll Opera house, "Himmler's House", the Moltke Bridge, etc- all of the major land marks. Other buildings could probably suffice, but why not go the entire distance if you are putting one major landmark?

I would do it as maybe 5 separate pieces.

This book is an indispensable aid to understanding how the battle for the city played out:

There are thought to be 2-300 defenders (rather than the 1,000 often quoted) of the building (primarily in the basement), with localized counterattacks being made from there. The book above gives as detailed a picture of the fighting as I have yet read (and I think I've read them all by now).

You could just have the little outside smaller rooms as mountable modules but leave the central area open (Not impassible).  It could have its own floor texture but open.  Any number of troops could occupy it and fight there.    Also since there are modules and impassible terrain between the central area and the outside troops could not shoot out to the street from the central area.
Large Stalingrad factories could be done the same way.

I don't know what to do about the roof.  Maybe half transparency?
