After losing quite some bombers yesterday, Miller slightly increased his bombing alt. Doesn´t make much difference in his hit rate (if it makes any difference), but again he lost 11 bombers today and I do like that. I guess it´s not the flak that is causing him trouble but more his fatigue that must be well around 40 from flying day after day at extended range. I think I figured out why all my flak guns at Koepang and Lautern aren´t causing him as much trouble as I´ve thought: all my base forces have high disruption, 60+ and while I know that disrupted ground troops have their assault value lowered by their disruption as a percentage, I didn´t think that the programmers thought about decreasing the flak fire due to disruption. This would really surprise me (positively) and when I look at the flak fire that is put up over Timor this really could be the case.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 3
B-25C Mitchell x 86

Allied aircraft losses

Japanese ground losses:
55 casualties reported

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 61

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 15000 feet

what doesn´t surprise me is the fact that 100% damage isn´t the max a base can get... [8|] Both runways are 100% damaged so they must have more than 100% damage after the attack as at the end of the turn, the eng at the bases start repairs. So.... I´ve got 300+ eng at both bases and at the start of next turn, one shows still 100% runway damage (the runway is always the first thing that is repaired) which means that it was 100%+ damaged and the eng couldn´t even get it to 99%... [8|]

Hi Castor - I follow your AAR quite a bit as this is a NikMod game and I am in one as well.

You are correct on the flak, I have noticed that after a big raid, and I am guessing I am facing about 1,500 4EB bombers available to the Allies in my NikMod game versus Bill (Spruance) the flak guns are pretty much disrupted.  In lots of cases, many of them are disabled if the strike hit the airfield.

So, you have a double whammy - your damaged fighters appear to land before the bombers drop their bombs (yes, on the rare occasions I have had full CAP I still have lost planes on the ground...) so they can be destroyed there and your flak is disrupted against follow on raids.  Additionally, by watching carefully it appears to me that the group number order factors in as well - later numbered bombing groups tend to not get as much flak damage; I believe this is because the flak is disrupted by the lower database number bombing groups.

The same thing is probably happening to your engineers as the raids tend to hit support troops and that is what they are classed as - I see most of my construction bns and base forces carrying high fatigue & disruption following 2 days of 300+ bomber raids and thus the repair rate is very slow.

There's not much you can do about it, and bringing in lots of planes to an airfield just makes the airfield symbol go dark red and invites an attack before you can react do to turn entry order.  I have tried LR CAP from multiple locations over a base, but, I have found the Ops losses to the Japanese fighters to be higher than the bombers shot down and I'd rather just lose the planes on the ground and save the pilots than lose them to crashes.

Hi!

I can only agree. I don´t have much disabled guns at my bases but disruption at least halves the flak effects at the moment. LRCAP isn´t an option at all, as you say, the op losses aren´t worth the non existing effect on the enemy bombers.

I´m not facing that many 4Es yet as we´re still in an early stage of the war but I know how it will look like. It´s severe enough to face hundreds of 2Es in a raid, but the 200+ 4E raids will kill everything in the range of 13 (B-17) or 14 (B-24) hexes and with strong opposition you can take down perhaps 20 of them, for the loss of 100 fighters on the ground. If you don´t lose that many on the first day, you lose them with the next raid at the latest as they are then sitting damaged on the ground.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/27/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Kendari at 33,71

Japanese Ships
AK Sansei Maru
MSW Wa 6
MSW Wa 3

Allied Ships
SS Albacore

Albacore moved to Kendari and it´s funny that this low quality escort attacked the sub as I also have 3 DD/APD TFs in the hex which unfortunately did nothing...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 6
B-25C Mitchell x 14
B-17E Fortress x 40
LB-30 Liberator x 9

Allied aircraft losses
PBY Catalina: 3 destroyed
B-25C Mitchell: 3 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 13 damaged
LB-30 Liberator: 5 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
42 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 27

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 15000 feet
8 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 15000 feet

Miller is moving two big TFs along the coast of Northern Australia so he wants to keep my bases closed. Walrus and Seagulls have spotted one of my subs in this area so this means there are cruisers also. Is this an invasion already??? [X(]

I mentioned in my email that Timor isn´t a nice place to be at the moment and Miller told me he has to keep my bases surpressed to bring supply to Northern Australia. I´ve got the feeling it´s not just a supply convoy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IV x 35
Wellington III x 29
Hudson I x 14

Wellington III: 2 destroyed, 10 damaged
Hudson I: 1 destroyed

Runway hits 32

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Wellington III bombing at 15000 feet
3 x Blenheim IV bombing at 15000 feet
4 x Hudson I bombing at 15000 feet

the hit rates are enough to keep my bases 100% damaged...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 3
B-25C Mitchell x 31
B-26B Marauder x 29

Allied aircraft losses

B-25C Mitchell: 13 damaged
B-26B Marauder: 5 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
62 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 23

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 15000 feet
20 x B-26B Marauder bombing at 15000 feet

even thouh flak fire wasn´t really severe today, the enemy still lost a lot of ac today! I´m absolutely satisfied with this kill rate. That way the enemy loses over 100 ac in a week for no losses on my side. It takes 250 fighters on a base to kill 50 bombers in one day with 100+ fighters lost so it seems we´re doing better when NOT trying to defend our bases. Although 7 of the ac losses over Timor were Catalinas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 2
B-25C Mitchell x 51

Allied aircraft losses

Japanese ground losses:
76 casualties reported

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 27

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 15000 feet

and the last raid today... the strikes became smaller and smaller, I´m sure the Allied squadrons have the majority of their bombers damaged and the crew´s morale surely doesn´t look good. The question now is if we´re really facing an upcoming invasion of Timor. If not, then I´m not sure if it is really worth all those losses just to keep my Timor bases surpressed to move in a supply convoy.

If it does come down to an invasion, what do you have to counter at Timor?

Miller obviously tried to ambush our BBs with his Swordfish but they didn´t attack yesterday (or he moved them in "today") and we torch a lot of ac on the ground with another nuke. Those base forces suffered ten thousands of casualties already but are still putting up a hell of a flak fire if we go in lower than 21.000ft...

Aircraft Attacking:

the airfield isn´t completely knocked out and we engage some Buffaloes over Karachi but they weren´t that much of a threat. As long as the enemy holds Delhi (we will never take the urban hex with 600+ assault points) he can move in aircraft from the South to Karchi as he did this time...

Defending force 211657 troops, 649 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4653

INVASION!!!!

Look at this! There´s no doubt that Lautern will be invaded next or in two turns. I´ve got 300+ assault points at Lautern but 200 of those assault points is from base forces and as Miller used the diddly diddly du trick of using dozens of float planes to recon Lautern this turn I´m 100% sure he will set off half a dozen nuke bombardments next turn and my base forces will be 100% destroyed as they have been on Midway and on Canton... [8|] it´s wonderful... when I look at how many different TFs he has here then I have to think about my invasion of India when I put 250.000 troops in three TFs... we will see, I´m sure we won´t see any CD fire at all, as the nukes... well, you know... the losses from the nukes only decreased as there is from nuke to nuke fewer left to destroy. My support troops are 100% disabled/destroyed, just like at Midway, just like at Canton. This is the third invasion of Miller and the third time he does the trick with the float plane to be 100% sure to 100% destroy ALL my support troops and CD guns. I´m sure this will be the same for the rest of the war.

Ha! Another Allied fanboy should tell me that only the IJN is able to do nukes in the game. [8|]

SUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! 15 low exp Swordfish attack and sink my BB... Well, the luck has switched sides again! The enemy airfield shows 94% damage but this is wrong intel it seems and the enemy achieves a wonderful hitrate with his low exp bombers. I´m quite pissed of as you can imagine. This is my first major loss and what really pisses me off is the fact that I was just dumb enough to send the BBs in again instead of bombing the airfield to be sure the Swordfish are destroyed.

Everything went wrong this turn...

Miller landed parts of the 2nd USMC and parts of an Australian division. Nothing else ashore so far but I´m sure there´s more to come next turn. As it looks like, he uses one TF for each unit that he lands. We had not a single airstrike today, I hope to see one next turn. [>:] We spotted Hornet sitting four hexes South West of Lautern, I´m sure all available Allied carriers are nearby. We have only some 100 assault points from inf units, the rest is from the wrecked base forces which aren´t existing anymore. I have no doubt that Miller will take the base. This means from now on it will get an interesting game as we now have real war going on!

IMO Miller attacked a tad too early. Even if my defenses in this area don´t look how they should, he has no P38 yet, he has no Corsairs and of course he has no Hellcats. But he also is short by 3 US carriers at the moment. If he doesn´t get Lautern operational soon and keeps it operational then he´s in trouble. I´m already thinking about giving up the assault on Karachi and just keep the base sieged forever and move out 3000 assault points after securing the rest of India (except Karachi and Delhi) and throw it against the Allied invasion. We will see...

BB Hyuga sunk after an attack by obsolete British torpedo bombers. After the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck in which the Swordfish played an important role, the biplanes now sink the Japanese battleship Hyuga as the admiral in command underestimated the threat of the outdated aircraft.

there won´t be a single ship sinking due to mines or CD fire. Well, only some 3500 mines there (that have no effect) and over 50 CD guns, that aren´t existing anymore due to half a dozen nuke naval bombardments in one night... [8|] That way the enemy can land like at a hostile base without an enemy present. This is somewhat depressing. It´s really a good way to use those float planes, unfortunately this will mean I will never have a CD gunfire for the rest of the war. With this landing here and Allied 4E bombers able to reach Borneo´s South coast and the Japanese inability to do something against them... well, we have lost the war... yesterday...

and here we go. After we didn´t launch a single strike yesterday due to whatever reason we start with most of my bombers failing to locate the target. The IJA bombers are useless at extended range, even though they all have 80+ exp... Miller has taken back all his carriers and combat ships, only the invasion ships remain at Lautern... as only two of the eight TFs unloaded yesterday, we could have killed a lot of troops on the ships yesterday...

and that´s it! The empty enemy invasion TFs are far from being wrecked, the IJA bombers proved to be more or less useless at 7 hexes. Miller will lose two dozen ships I guess when they will probably retreat tomorrow, so this invasion is already a full success for him.

Well done Paul! [&o]

Unfortunately, I have ordered KB to move out of this area a week ago, so this was absolutely bad timing I guess.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

another Allied base in India falls. The plan now is: sieze all those bases East of Calcutta (shouldn´t be a problem) and then crush Calcutta. Urban hex with 200+ assault points. Will be a tough nut but with all the tanks it should be possible.

RETREAT from Karachi! Not with all troops, but with the majority. We will keep 2000 assault points at the base, this will mean the enemy won´t be able to break out with his ground forces. Of course he will be able to move them out with his ships. Two reasons for this: the first and major one is that defeating an enemy that gets an adjusted av of 12.000+ is near to impossible and Nikmod makes two wrecked Allied base forces (from my nuke naval bombardments) so strong that we can´t use our bombers against the ground troops from an altitude that makes it worth attacking. Even 16.000ft is too low. [8|] The second reason is of course the Allied advance directly into the SRA from Northern Australia. Miller can now move up to Java without having much problems as soon as he gets the level 6 airfield running on Lautern as he doesn´t need carriers here. He can stack 300 bombers on Lautern and send them unescorted on raids up to 14 hexes. 10/42 will make it even worse as then he will have Lightnings available. But I guess he will be better off sending his bombers unescorted...

I guess there´s not much doubt that I will win in game terms as I will surely achieve a decisive autovictory on 1/43 but this says nothing. In fact when Miller gets his machine running out of Timor in early 43 (when the Corsair arrives) then I have lost and I must admit defeat then.

No matter in which mod, Timor and Northern New Guinea seems always the best option for an attack into vital areas of the Japanese. The stronger the Allied bombers are, the worse for the Japanese. In my case, it is really bad as Nikmod is the mod I´ve played so far that makes the Allied bombers the strongest of all mods.

well, there´s no doubt that I lose this base within the next couple of days. When I look at all those Allied divisions that landed totally without opposition and therefor in perfect shape (as they did in the two previous invasions) I´m happy now that I have not more troops at the base.

The base is 100% damaged but all those troops will have it repaired within 7 days at the latest. Then the enemy will have a level 6 airfield 7 hexes from my next major resource base (Kendari). I can put 300 fighters there but 300 fighters on 90% Cap will mean 150 in the air and 150 fighters can´t even stop one attack of 300 bombers. After this one attack, Kendari is toast and Miller can move to the next base. Taking Koepang is no problem, then there will be 600 bombers on Timor... and so on... lol - game over![:'(]

Well, I just love the Stringbag, and here's why.  It's slow, it's unmaneuverable, it's fragile, it's obsolete... but it was so successful.[&o]

However, I'm sorry for your loss.[:(]

It was my own fault. You´re stupid if you know that there are torpedo bombers and you still send in BBs...

combined strike out of Maumere and Kendari. The IJA bombers are based at Maumere. A lot of shipping is hit again, our main problem will be the fact that those ships only have to go 6 hexes and they can be disbanded at Darwin. Another problem for the Japanese when the Allied attacks out of Northern Australia, he can make use of his ports there. When the Allied attack in the Pacific, they have most times a looong way to the next level 6 or higher port and one torp can be devastating for an AK. In this case, one torp won´t sink a big AK/AP.

what would I have given for such attacks the first day when not a single bomber launched and 80% of the enemy troops were still on the ships waiting to get unloaded. We could have sunk a lot of troops on their ships as Miller did nothing with his carriers other than positioning them 5 hexes off the invasion site. This could have caused a lot of casualties but once again, he gets away with it. Of course it would not have had any influence on the invasion being a success, even 1/3 of the troops that were landed on the beaches could take the base.

I have to go up with the numbers of expected sinkings, I guess in the end Miller will something around 40 ships. Sounds high for one invasion, is nothing for this war winning move though...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

this retreat costs us 200 points for ground losses, this is 40% of our total losses so far...

The Allied units landed until today and they get a higher adjusted av with a deliberate attack than their base av... what can I say, it doesn´t matter anyway, even if they get their av halfed, they still easily take the base.

The plan was to sink ships during the landing with mines and heavy CD fire but this plans are just phantasy as Miller will be able to always nuke my bases and therefore he won´t ever see real CD gunfire, no matter if I place 1 or 20 CD units in a hex. If I place 20 units there, only my losses will be 20 times higher.

Miller now have 5 division and a lot of artillery sitting here, I didn´t spot a single base force but I´m sure those will come in soon and then he has a level 6 airfield ready to bomb Kendari and Maumere to dust with unescorted bomber raids. All bases up to Kendari can also be reached by 4Es from Northern Australia and this means I will have to evacuate those bases in two months at the latest! LOL

Like I´ve mentioned earlier, IMO this attack was a war winning move. Not points wise, but campaign wise. We will still trigger autovictory in three months (if we don´t lose all of KB) but the game was won by Miller today! Therefor it proves now that my invasion of India was wrong. Not because I could use those divisions on Timor. Using them there is senseless when you have your troops in range of 1000 undestructable Allied bombers so I couldn´t use them there anyway. Wrong because my first plan was to attack Northern Australia as I always see an attack out of this area as the MOST dangerous! I´m all the time amazed that many Allied players don´t seem to realize that it´s the BEST direction of attack as you are immediately within the heart of the Japanese most important area. If you manage to advance up to Maumere, it means game over for all your oil and resources in Sulawesi, Java and Southern Borno as then your ships are in range of Allied 4Es - which can´t be stopped at all in Nikmod but I´m only repeating myself on and on.

As it stands now, I will thrown in the kitchen sink as I´m sure that Mille won´t ever change his major attack direction. The problem are still the same though. He can trash my bases just like he wishes to without having to fear my flak nor my fighters. He can also trash KB with one strike as KB´s fighter can´t defend KB against 150 Mitchells. I can attack his shipping... and that´s it! I can not attack his bases! Why? Because of Allied flak! What do you think I will achieve with 200 medium bombers from Kendari when they attack Lautern at 11.000ft? I will achieve 50 runway hits and will lose 30 bombers to flak in one attack with 90% of the rest being damaged. Then the 4Es will show up over Kendari and torch 150 of the damaged bombers at Kendari. The 50 runway hits will be repaired by a dozen sea bea units in one day.

In stock, this wouldn´t be a real desperate situation as we´re still early in the war and I could easily counterattack. Nikmod flak and Nikmod Allied bombers unfortunately don´t give me this possibility. If he gets just ONE succesful attack on Kendari then he will keep it closed easily... one attack and he can make his next jump another 7 hexes North...

I guess it will be a bloody fight the next weeks, perhaps two months, then my airforce, navy and perhaps the army will be totally exhausted and I will just have to wait for the autovictory to pop up and to ask Miller for peace and admit that I can´t stop him from moving into the SRA. It´s depressing that employing 600! fighters on two bases in Timor where not enough to keep us in the game against unescorted bomber strikes. And those bomber strikes are the reason I have to give up sooner or later.

Miller won´t have many more divisions available than those he commited at Lautern, so he probably will have to bring some of them out again, at the latest when he starts his next invasion. This could be the time when I could throw 10 of my divisions at Lautern for a counterattack but I´m 100% sure that the enemy 155mm guns from several of his art units, USMC CD units and USN base forces would eat my ships alive during the landing and my divisions would come ashore at perhaps 50% combat readiness. Then 600+ medium bombers from Wyndham and Darwin and 200 4Es from Derby would attack my shipping... this is when the IJN will go down in a blaze of glory.

god damnd dont be so pessimistic, chris...or is it just understatement?[;)]

-you destroyed a big part of the allied carrier force, while the KB is intact.
-you destroyed alot of allied shipping.
-you are at advance in china.
-you are close to secure india and burma.
-you have a strong position in SWPAC.
-and miller can not attack your ressource/oil centers with his 4E because of the HRs.
-you will get better protected fighters with more punch soon so the allied unescorted bomber attacks will be more expensive from then.

even at timor, you have the ability to turn the tide and to destroy the enemy troops there in some weeks.

btw: enjoying to follow this AAR from the beginning.

partially correct, but... [;)]

- the only place the Allied can advance without carriers is... exactly where Miller is now attacking...

- a lot of shipping would be 300 ships! Below that number, it´s nothing for the Allied. Two dozen APs lost, well he now has to use more AKs for troop shipping...

- China does help me nothing when the Allied move on Sulawesi and Java

- same goes for India and Burma, does help me nothing when 4Es will be in range of Soerabaja and Balikpapan soon

- The Pacific is secure, without his carriers he won´t attack anyway. Why should he, taking Canton Island means nothing. Two goals for the Allied in the game: attack the SRA, attack Japan. One goal already achieved, he´s already attacking the SRA. Kendari, Amboina, Sorong - all part of the SRA and they are now in full range of heavy AND medium bombers.

- correct, he can not bomb oil/resources of Japanese held Allied territory. But he can sink ships, especially TK! Move a dozen big TK to Soerabaja and then watch 100 B-17/B-24 (high exp by then) dropping bombs on your ships from 10.000ft. Those bombers are more a threat than Betties for everything smaller than a heavy cruiser as they can kill those ships, but they can´t be held off by fighters. The Betties can kill all ships but you don´t want them to meet 50 Allied fighters...

- the better protected fighter with more firepower is the Tojo! The Tojo is a killer against unescorted bombers in stock just like the Zero is... in Nikmod, the Tojo won´t help you against the bombers. Not at all. With the Tojo, the Allied would perhaps have lost 40 more bombers over Timor, but the end result would be the same. There is no chance to stop more than 50 bombers other than to see them turning away right at the start due to low morale. Morale can be recovered within 10 days and then launch one big strike. This strike takes out your airfield and that´s it... and you lose half of your fighters on the ground on the first day if all ordered strikes go in. On the second and third day, you lose the other half of your fighters that are now damaged and grounded...

- like I´ve posted in my previous threat, I don´t see a real chance to turn the tide at Timor as I can´t see how I should surpress his single base. lol I just don´t have the bombers to do that as mine are fragile and the enemy flak is using SAMs. I would need at least 10 divisions to attack those 5 divisions there. Wooden hex, I would probably need 15-20 divisions. I don´t have that many, nor do I have the shipping to bring them in. Miller must play it out absolutely poor if he ever gets in danger of losing Lautern again. It will be the opposite IMO, he will soon seize Koepang on the West end of the island and then he has 2 level 6 airfields... means 600 bombers on Timor! Dili in between is a cake walk for him and can be built up to level 4 within a couple of weeks with half a dozen sea beas. Then we´re talking about 800 ac on Timor. I can base 300 at Kendari, hopefully soon 200 at Maumere and at the moment 150 at Macassar (also Sualwesi). Means I can soon base 650 aircraft North of Timor. Try to do something with 650 aircraft against 800 Allied with the Allied having their absolutely deadly flak. It´s a hopeless fight, I can´t even keep my bases secure if I would use 650 Tojos on them but then I don´t have spare room for a single bomber. The only thing I can use are naval bombardments and KB´s Kates that use laser guieded bombs even when attacking at 26.000ft where we don´t have to fear the Allied SAMs anymore... but what when I don´t get nukes constantly? And what means constantly? Can I do nav bombardments of Lautern for the rest of the war? What when PTs show up? How many DDs am I ready to lose against them? A dozen? 20? All of them?

you see, it´s a war winning move and not even 2000 assault points dispersed over Koepang and Lautern would have helped me, it would only delay the fall of Timor for a couple of weeks but then it´s the same. The war losing move was the fact that I didn´t attack Northern Australia first! When I look at how Miller acted (by not acting) in India, it would have been no problem to attack Northern Australia first and seize those four bases. A ground offensive is very difficult for the Allied as they won´t get much supplies from the East coast over the railline and we could hold those bases for a long time with only nav guard units behind high level forts. It would have delayed my Indian invasion by two months and it would have been worth it.

With 12.000+ adjusted av at Karachi I would have stopped at exactly the same line I do now, keeping Karachi and Delhi sieged, while conquering the rest of the subcontinent. It´s impossible to take an urban base when the enemy gets an adjusted av that is higher than your complete Kwangtung army has! And as mentioned, a2g attacks are no option, two wrecked base forces would take down 12-20 bombers every turn if I would attack at 11.000ft. That´s the dilemma...

I can only repeat myself again, my main - no, my only problems - are the undestructable Allied bombers that hurt you more when attacking unescorted than you hurt hem when you put 300 fighters at a base and the Allied flak that makes it more or less impossible to attack their bases. Voila, that´s it then...

I´m happy that you enjoy the AAR, I´m enjoying both the game and doing the AAR. It will be bloody months ahead but at the moment I can´t see how the game should go much longer than mid 43. If I would be in the position of Miller I would expect my troops sitting in Northern Java and Southern Borneo within the next 6 months. If something goes bad, then perhaps within the next 8 monts. As soon as they have Batavia, nothing is safe up to Singapore! Any more questions? [:D]

hi chris,

my only remaining question is:

why do you play nikmod?

i know that you find the weakness of "uber-CAP" in nikmod good, but imho, the develoüpers went too far and did not considered that their changes will cause a huge imbalance in air combat what is THE key aspect of WITP.

although it is not ok, when 100 zeros shoot down 100 B-25, its also wrong that 200 japanese fighters destroy 10-15 allied 2E bombers in the CAP role.

it seems realy that the nikmod "forgives" even more mistakes of the allied player, then stocks do.

have a nice day, chris.

good question and to be honest, I´ve asked this question also in the past. I´ve played this version of Nikmod from both sides so I wasn´t only on the receiving end of the all mighty Allied bombers and Allied flak. I´ve played stock of course, then switched over to mods. Started with an early Nikmod 5.x or so which worked quite good. Then I´ve switched to BigB, which also worked quite good but soon it was as bloody as stock, at least that was my feeling. So changing to Nikmod again with a version that totally damaged fighters from flying cap - PBEM quit. BigB again, too bloody.

Well, the last games with this Nikmod version and I can say that fighter vs fighter really seems to work very good. Also Allied fighters vs Japanese bombers seems to work quite good. But as you say, hundreds of Japanese fighters vs unescorted Allied bombers doesn´t work at all IMO. This is probably a big problem until mid 43 when the first Japanese fighter with at least gun value 10 shows up - the Tony. I´ve never seen it in combat all my NM games ended just before that date so I´m not really sure it will make that much of a difference. But, when you see the fights at places the Allied "usually" advance, means through the Pacific, from atoll to atoll and from the Solomons up to New Guinea then it also works! Why? Because in this area you can´t mass the 800+ bombers Miller can mass at his bases in Northern Australia and then it´s not that much of a problem. Of course Northern Australia and Timor and the bases further North are close enough together and big enough to really mass numbers of aircraft.

Hard choice . . . on day one hit Manilla to take out the subs or PH to take out the nukes?

I would still attack the subs. If I would have sunk ALL BBs at Pearl, this would have no impact on the nukes - well, only a small one... One nuke or max two are enough and there is nothing shooting back anymore and you can achieve that with having all your float planes from the BBs and CA/CL flying recon the day before. If you see 40+ float planes over the enemy´s base then this raises the detection level that high that you ALWAYS trigger a nuke. The more support troops your enemy has at the base, the bigger the casualties from the nuke. There is only one way to avoid a nuke, as the receiver: don´t put ANY support troops at a base, as inf units aren´t targeted anyway.

So Miller needs, let´s say 4 BBs and a dozen CAs and he could nuke Lautern four times. 2x2 BB TF, 2x6 CA TF = 4 nukes = 20.000 casualties within the support troops on Lautern = 500 hits on the airfield = game over for the defense. Of course he could also repeat that a couple of times in no time because his CAs can go in and out from Darwin (6 hexes) in one day).

And he has far more than 2 BBs, no matter if you attack Pearl Harbour or not. In fact, I think CAs are most times even better for bombardments than BBs, at least I have had the overall better results with them when it comes to achieving hits on the airfields.

The problem isn´t the number of BBs, the problem is that the float planes enable his bombardments to be nukes all the time. I´ve played a lot of PBEMs so far but I have never seen naval bombardments that have such an effect on the game, because in his three invasions so far, we have seen the nukes completely wiping out the coast defense, meaning the landing at a hostile beach (bristling with CD guns the day before) is just like as if the enemy would land at an empty enemy base, taking some casualties but not at all comparable with a landing when at least a couple of the 50+ CD guns would fire at the landing. NONE of my CD guns fired at Midway, Canton and Lautern because they were ALL wiped out the night before due to the nukes.
