Mysteryously emptied jap pilot pool ????

Post by gladiatt »

So, playing japan against AI, Stock 1.806. Historical difficulty. Grand campaign.
Facilities not allowed to expand at start. Units and air units not allowed to recomplete :
i wanted to have control on my pilot pool...

ON 11 dec, my IJN pilot pool dropped from 100 to 98....??? UHH ?[X(]
OK, i didn't add a new pilot anywhere.
ON 12 dec, my pool dropped from 98 to....55 . WHAT ????????? [:@]
And so on.... ON dec 25, the ijn pool is at 38 and i didn't make anything...
So is the game already doomed ???
Is it a known bug ?

And this is only one of the numerous wrong fate i'm suffering as japan.
I thought the first two month of war were the best time for japan...no way, it's suck !![:@]

You have a squadron somewhere set to receive replacements. Or you have some command under computer control. There are no bugs in the pilots area. I watch this like a hawk.

Er... not sure about this latter... people have been complaining intermittently about this for some time (witness the SMALL SHIP/BIG WAR thread where Cuttlefish has written in something about tainted uniforms removing 1/3 of his pilots.)

Cuttlefish was probably hit by the late-war pilot bug; pilots disappear due to slot limitations. This is never ever an issue until 1944 at the earliest.

Well; but if i put the setting of the game as to never accept replacement without my order, and never put anything under computer control, how could it be that pilot get to an airgroup ? And in so much amount ??? And each day losing 2 or3 more pilots in the pool????
There weren't any airgroup coming from reinforcement schedule in this time either...

So what ???
It really bother me [:@][:@]

Oops - i had assumed this was later in the game... i see now (on rereading this) that it appears to be at the start of the game.

How did you make sure that the groups are not taking reinforcements? Did you go through and check each of them to make sure??

Simple question: was the game STARTED with "no reinforcements" set from the options menu? If it wasnt, every squadron entering the game will have reinforcements "on" and therefore will soak up pilots on the turn they arrive.

Exactly. This would be my bet.

Well, guys, i'm sorry to say it another time: that's what i said from the begginning: the game was started with "no reinforcement" set; many thread here were talking about the management of pilots pools, and the need to control the reinforcement. So i decided to have this option set, and to draw pilots myself.
So i have no explications.
Doesn't mind anyway...
Thanks for you'r interest

Is there a possibility that you have some area of the map under computer control?

Double check those computer control settings, trust nothing to computer control.....crazy things happen. Watch out if you transfer any over strength air units........in stock, just about every Nell and Betty group is over strength. When you transfer, well the units will automatically suck pilots for all those extra planes.

But, it is common for a stock game as Japan to lose all your starting IJN pilots by Jan 42.......either by the above or you grabbing a few pilots. Play a mod, most give you a larger starting pool so you are not sucking air as fast.

I though no replacements meant no aircraft, could be wrong here.

But many japanese air units begin with only about 50% pilots, so i would assume they automatically fill with pilots, at least to the aircraft strength.

Worth a check.

edit As a first, I looked up the manual. I think 2.5.7 covers it but doesnt mention pilots or 15.2.2

Air units may receive pilot replacements during the Supply Operations phase. Units that h
more ready aircraft than pilots will have new pilots assigned to the unit from the pilot replacement
pool. The number of trained pilots, and the base experience levels of these replacement pilots are
listed on the Pilot Replacement screen. However, if replacement pilots are needed and none are
available, poorly trained replacement pilots will be provided to the air groups needing them. These
poorly trained replacement pilots will enter the game with roughly ½ of the experience of that
nationality’s trained replacement pilots.

I have a hard time believing this. I have played this game for years both 1 player and 2 player, 1 day and 2 day turns and NEVER seen what you are describing with no air or ground reinforcements set to off at the start of the game. More likely you thought it was and wasnt.

Some air group(s) have replacements on. No doubt about it.

I once emptied all of my Indian Rifle squads in a few short turns with everything set to no replacements. What I figure happened was when I was looking at a troop listing screen, I indavertantly hit the Allow Replacements button. Hasn't everyone had the window positioned such that you get an additional click when a window opened.

I suggest going through and checking the setting of every airgroup. It is too easy to inadveratntly hit a button and get an unexpected result.
I have been inputting my orders for the campaign game first turn since July 4, 2009. I'm getting close. In another month or two, I might be able to run the turn!

There is a screen that shows all land based aircraft. At the bottom of this screen there is a button that says "dont accept reinforcements". Same with naval air units and same with ground units. You can hit this button on each of these to insure that all units on the map are set to none. But this wont stop incoming groups from being on if it wasnt set at the start of the game.

I agree with JeffK. IIRC, Japan has a lot of air units that start the game with plenty of planes, but not enough pilots. I think there has been complaint of the "unlimited first turn pool", where you could draw pilots on the first turn and the pool would not decrease....but if you draw them on the second turn, you deplete the pool.

I would suspect the Gladiatt does have all of his air unit on "no replacement" and these units are not replacing planes, but they are replacing pilots in order to have an equal amount of pilot as plane in all of his air units.

No. Pilots will only replace if "replacements" is set to on regardless of the numbers of planes and pilots currently in the unit.
