A surprising lack of DD escort for the CA's. (And a pity Portland and Indianapolis caught all the shells; Minneapolis has a bit more in the way of armor.) I'm assuming the invasion force turned around?

Harlock,

These were just the three CAs which were damaged in my first demonstration against Wake when I first took over. They got repaired at Hawaii and I kept them there as a small anti-invasion guard force, hence the lack of escorts.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/02/42

Today I got my first replacement P-51 XP --- which is now the fastest thing on the map. I only get 30 a month but it should allow me to get some truly awesome exchange rates for a couple of months. Next month I get P-38s. My training programme is now beginning to graduate Exp 70+ pilots and my plan is to get about 2 squadrons together by the end of October and use them to begin pushing deeper again with long-range sweeps followed by low-level bombing raids.

Right now my biggest problem is having too few suitable airfields in the north for my long-range bombers. I think I'm gonna have to launch some pretty major amphibious invasions throughout the winter... Damnit.

You have only two months of fun left up north before winter weather effects come into force. May be time to go on the offensive somewhere else when that happens. The question would be where?!?

The IJN comes out to play.

Post by Nemo121 »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/03/42

In a rather daring move the IJN has come out to strike my Sea Lines of Communication between CONUSA and the Aleutians.

Now we'll see if my trap works. He has found weakness but not asked why that weakness is present when his ploy ( cutting my lines of supply ) is a rather obvious one. If he sticks around in my "area of weakness" tomorrow I think he'll lose most of his CV fleet. We'll see. In the meantime I think he has probably managed to sink one of my new USN BBs which was sailing with minimal escorts ( a CLAA and a couple of DDs ) to Petropavlovsk.

Ouch, almost 70 Japanese planes ( including some difficult to replace Mikes and Bettys were destroyed on the ground ). Not a bad day's work.

The small strike groups suggest that this is probably nothing more than 3 or 4 CVLs --- still a prize worth killing though. Every CVL sunk helps the cause.

Now, its time to rest, bring in another 2,000 AV of fresh Chinese troops and then try to Shock and Pursue all the way to Ban Don.

Kittyhawks, F4F4s and P-40Es which have been kept out of sight for some time are now being brought in to play to provide the necessary escorts for my strike groups ( SBDs and 1 group each of Avengers and Pe-2s). I don't expect my fighters will have the ability to shoot down many Zeroes but simply by absorbing Zero firing runs they'll help the bombers survive and, frankly, I can lose 50 fighters to no reply for every CV sunk and still count it a huge victory.

Well before those two months are up I expect to hold the Malaysian peninsula including Singapore. This means that I can then extend either through Borneo or Java and then Borneo OR along the southern coast of China towards Formosa.

I like the idea of developing the Southern China axis as:
a) there are excellent airfields there  and
b) it would allow me to leverage my Royal Navy assets and synchronise both vertical and amphibious envelopments of any enemy defensive lines which were set up.

Ideally by mid-43 I would like to have Japan completely isolated and have an airtight sea and aerial cordon with a concentrated port and aerfield bombing campaign.

Since strategic bombing is now off the table in order to keep this game interesting ( a couple of months of concentrated HI bombing would bring Japan straight to its knees at this stage ) my best way of getting a capitulation is to sink every ship berthed in the Home Islands and sink every ship which tried to run to or from an HI port.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 106,39

I caught the enemy CV TF.

Japanese aircraft

3:1 exchange rate in fighters BUT the bombers get through and that's what matters.

Japanese Ships
CVL Chitose, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
CVL Keito
CVL Kanto, Bomb hits 1, on fire

The Keito and Kanto are ultra-fast "raider CVLs" perfect for this kind of operation. Fragile but fast and long-ranged. I expect that even a small bomb into one of these should cause significant carnage.

P-38G Lightning: 2 destroyed
Pe-2: 3 destroyed, 10 damaged

Well, well, the Zeroes shoot down my fighters at a 5:1 exchange rate now that those fighters are tied down to escorting bombers. Still, the bombers get through and cause even more carnage.

It looks to me like 2 CVLs are certain to sink with a third being damaged and, possibly, in range for further strikes.

The IJAF screams into action.

Post by Nemo121 »

Sometimes we all need to take a risk...

Today saw a major influx of enemy planes into Bangkok. My mouse-over shows over 170 fighters and a similar number of bombers, recon etc. I expect that Damian will be LRCAPing the hex West of Bangkok very heavily and so I'm going to change tacks here rather radically and take a risk.

IF I can take Bangkok today then ALL of those 300+ planes he has there AND their pilots can get destroyed on the ground. In order to take it, now that it has only Level 2 forts, I will need 4:1 odds. So, ALL of my bombers will go in against Bangkok at low altitude. I expect losses will be high but if they can disrupt the enemy then I have a great chance to achieve a decisive victory, take Bangkok and wipe out a month's worth of new pilot graduates in a day.

Since I'm sure Bangkok will have some CAP of Tojos and Mikes I am sending in about 100 MiG-3s, 50 Spits and as many Kittyhawks and P-40Es as I can find on aggressive sweeps in advance of my bombers.

If I'm right I'll bag 300 Japanese planes and pilots on the ground, if I'm wrong and his entire force is CAPing Bangkok then I will lose several hundred planes today. Either way it should be interesting.

Ouch, there were no bombers but it looks like about 80 fighters have been destroyed on the ground. Usuaully the CR underestimates ground losses by about 50% so that could be 180 fighters and pilots... Not a bad haul at all for a day's work.

Now all that remains is to pursue into Thailand and bring the Royal Navy into action in the China Sea... I've also been having a good look at Borneo recently with some of my subs and I think there are some nice Level 2 and 3 airfields there which aren't properly garrisoned. I might be able to sneak a couple of them with paraborne landings and accelerate things much more than I had previously thought.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/06/42

Over the next few days I'll rest my troops, begin allocating worn out units to coastal defence duties in Vietnam and begin complicating Damian's evacuation of / rush to reinforce Malaya by putting my long-range bombers on naval attack and also by trying to parachute in to capture a few bases in Borneo and the Phillipines which it looks like Damian has forgotten to garrison. My idea is that if I can capture a number of these bases I will be able to disrupt his evacuation sufficiently to prevent his orderly withdrawal into Festung Phillipines.

Elsewhere I'm moving around the flanks of his troops at Borzya in the Soviet Union and I'm organising my forces for my second-last major invasion of 1942 in the North.

Damian has agreed to place some 600 fighters ( Nates and Claudes ) on CAP over Japan in return for me not doing ANY strategic bombing. He can rescind this agreement whenever he wants. Basically though at the cost of 600 fighter training spots he has gotten a priceless halt to my bombing campaign. If I'd gotten the bombing rolling you can take it for granted that NO Ki-44 III would ever have seen service as I would have bombed those bases into nothingness.

Ah, this bombardment destroys Singkawang. I had hoped to kill some shipping as it was retaken and attrit Damian enough so that my 2nd wave of base captures would survive the weakened Japanese reaction. Unfortunately this isn't possible now that Singkawang has been utterly put out of action by this bombardment. By the time morning comes 32 MiG-3s are destroyed on the ground and some of my best Soviet pilots are trapped without any planes to fly. Oops.

Well, if this threat to the left flnk of Malaysia doesn't get him to run straight for Singapore then nothing will. Already I am seeing him abandon Ban Don and run to Lingayen. This is encouraging - particularly as, eventually, this means I'm going to get a few big airbases on the Malaysian peninsula from which I can really massacre shipping into and out of Singapore.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/11/42

What I'm doing now falls under the heading of "multiplying the complexity of the enemy's strategic and operational problems". My idea is as follows:
1. It keeps him reacting to me rushing ships and troops from A to B to C
2. It never gives him the time to sit and THINK about what's happening
3. It allows me to attrit his forces over the course of multiple base invasions such that each invasion is a little weaker than the last until such time as he is no longer able to successfully counter-invade what I take.

At that point in time I'll capitalise on that success and create a new Allied "island" in the midst of the enemy's operational depth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 74 troops unloading over beach at Great Natuna I [DEI], 27,52

Great Natuna is a tiny little island with no airbase BUT it has huge value as its central location mkes it a perfect base for flying boats. Those flying boats then spot all manner of enemy shipping and, thus alerted, my bombers in Vietnam fly out and try to nail those ships.

All of the bombers which were hitting SG are now down in the DEI and this means that SG is, once again, ready to accept fighters and become a thorn in the Japanese side.

So, in 2 days his reaction to Singkawang means that TWO new bases will be able to establish themselves... and so on and so forth.

Ah, Cagayan. This ought to really concentrate Damian's attention on this base. It might even bring his Ki-264 As out to play --- which would be a huge mistake as those bombers shouldn't be wasted on a base his Ki-48s etc could hit. They should be massed in strikes 100 to 200 strong and sent en masse against targets NOTHING else he has can hit. Still, its his mistake to make and I'm inviting him to make it. Sometimes the art of winning is just allowing your opponent the space they need to make the wrong choice.

The Angels did indeed come out to play, but not in the numbers you recommend. Any idea how many of your fighters were lost in A2A, and how many were destroyed on the ground?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?
