it turns out now that it was very good to send my surface combat TFs into Lautern as they´ve forced out a couple of enemy TFs and two of them ended North West of Lautern last turn. This means they were still in range of my Betties (I´ve kept them at only 8 hexes which means one hex further than Koepang is away from Kendari). Miller told me he lost any joy of taking Koepang with the massacre of his ships already. Well, I would have preferred to hold Koepang and sink none of the ships.

In the end he really lost a lot of his APs and IMO he shouldn´t have used any APs in the landings as he needs his APs to ferry troops from the West Coast to Australia and he can use AKs for his invasions. And he used once again far too few ships for his landing. Would he have had three times more ships, he would have been away with them after one day or two, not staying in range with them for several days...

But that´s not really counting, 40 ships or so lost for taking Koepang is a good trade IMO...

finally, a little morale boost for the high command of the Japanese. While the Navy is blamed for not being able to defend Timor against the Allied counterattack, the Army shows that they still are the ruling party on the continent with finally taking Yenen in North China. We will now follow the retreating Chinese troops to the bases North of Sian and hope to thake those three bases there soon... then it´s time to kill the defending troops of Sian...

we have spotted the Allied carriers moving West from Darwin again, also several transport TFs. So either Miller is withdrawing his carriers again or this is the upcoming invasion of Koepang already. I just don´t know why he should withdraw his carriers, but I also can´t believe that he can already mount the invasion of Koepang after he threw 2000+ assault points at Lautern...

we´ll see...

We have a plan! Look at the map below, we are trying to hit the Allied hard tomorrow! We have spotted Martlets and Seafires flying Cap over Wyndham and we got recon about CVs being in port. There´s no doubt I guess that there are two or three British carriers disbanded in the level 4 port of Wyndham with nearly no Cap over the base. Nearly no Cap is something like 50 fighters. Seems very careless to me, or Miller feels absolutely safe it seems. He also didn´t keep up the constant bombing of Lautern and so our base is ready for 200 ac to be moved in and strike tomorrow.

The plan is as follows: KB (with 450 ac) and another CV TF (CV, CVL, CVE with another 300 ac) will move to a position North of Timor, 11 hexes from Wyndham. The fighters will be set to sweep Wyndham with 50% Cap as I don´t want to run uncovered into 300 bombers at Koepang if Miller decides to move a couple of squadrons to this base. To make sure we won´t have to fear Koepang´s airfield, two CA bombardment TFs will bombard the airfield during the night, we hope to take out the airfield. In the morning, the first strike should come from Lautern as this base is the closest to Wyndham. 100 fighters on escort should enable 100 bombers to break through the Cap and put a dozen bombs into the carriers. Either 800kg AP bombs or torps! [:D] Then my carrier TFs should both launch their sweeps on the remaining Cap. Hopefully weather doesn´t cloud in both of my TFs. After those two sweeps I don´t expect any enemy fighters on Cap anymore and then 200+ unescorted bombers from Kendari should arrive over the base to finish off the already burning British carriers. This is an all out effort! As mentioned before, Miller arrived at an area where I will throw in the kitchen sink to "stop" him. Stopping him is impossible but I will surely wreck havoc on his ships a couple of times. His ground troops and aircraft are untouchable over the long run in this mod but I can and will hurt his navy which is easier in this mod as there´s nothing like an Uber Cap. There´s Uber flak though! [;)] To be more precise: ALLIED Uber flak...

I´m 100% sure that the airfield symbol at Lautern will atract hundreds of Allied bombers tomorrow (thanks to this special feature...) so the port strike MUST launch in the morning, otherwise all my ac will be destroyed on the ground. 150 fighers from Maumere will fly LRCAP over the base. I don´t expect them to achieve a lot, they will probably achieve nothing I guess. We will see what tomorrow will bring, either a hurting Japanese defeat or a hurting hit for Miller!

looks like my plan works with Lautern´s airfield launching the first strike! It´s the usual happening, the Allied fighters get the bounce and and on and on and only a short time we don´t have to suffer from the Allied never ending bounce. This was the phase when we then were able to hurt the Allied fighters also. I guess during the bounce phase, the Allied fighters achieved a 10:1 kill rate which is quite amazing considering the fact that our Zeros are 80+ exp. Of course the British carrier pilots are well skilled also. The Seafire proved to be far deadlier than the Martlet!

Our fighters succesfully held off most of the Allied attackers on our formations and the bombers were able to push through and they soon sighted Wyndham´s port to drop their loads! BUT WHAT HAPPENED THEN??? [:@][:@] Achieving one f*cking (sorry) hit on a CLAA???? 115 high exp IJN bombers drop their bombs on at least a dozen ships in port and we only achieve one f*cking hit? None of the CVs hit??? This is ridicoulos! I´ve never seen something like this before! Imagine your PH strike on turn one would only see one bomb hit from your Kates? Would you ask if the game is broken? Well, this result is not that far from a broken game it seems to me...

THIS IS JUST SO DEPRESSING... [:(]

Now one of my CV TFs launched it´s strike, it wasn´t KB but the high exp KB pilots aren´t needed anyway, as multiple strikes really kill enemy CAP! It was a totally amazing result as those Zero pilots are nothing better than the escorts of the first strike, but not being on escort and being the second strike helped a lot. AND the Allied didn´t get a never ending bounce phase! There shouldn´t be any enemy fighters left for my next sweep or the bomber strike from Kendari...

KB was clouded in so here we go with our strike from Kendari. The bombers only meet 3 fighters that are no threat and then 216 bombers drop bombs and torps (around 25 bombers attacked with torps). I thought, well, the strike from Lautern was a very, very rare result and now the enemy high value ships at Wyndham are toast... bomb after bomb and torp after torp splash and nearly no hits... I began to wonder and in the same moment I got more and more upset! What the hell is going on? Why aren´t my bombers hitting something? Then we saw more hits and I thought it would be enough to cause major damage on the enemy carriers, as we are dropping 800kg bombs!!!! Well, it was NOT enough, it seems that a 800kg bomb is worth nothing! Just look at those carriers, they don´t even show up as heavily damaged! This means they don´t even have a combined sys and flt damage of 50!!!! This game is nuts!!!

Besides that my bombardment TFs were shredded by our own mines and that KB was clouded in (we didn´t need those fighters anyway) everything worked as planned and then I get such die rolls? Am I drunk? First I get ridicoulosly low hit rates and then 4 x 800kg bombs and a torp doesn´t even heavily damage a British carrier? I can´t believe it!

I thought that if both bomber strikes would arrive in full strenght over Wyndham that I would sink at least two of the three carriers, more probably would be all carriers sunk... and then this sh*t happened. 331 high (means 80+) exp IJN torp bombers achieved 17 800kg bomb hits and 3 torp hits! This would be the same as if your PH strike on 12/7 would achieve three bomb hits and one torp hit. What would you think about?

I just don´t get it! This is a level 4 port and there is not even nearly enough Cap and we launch the maximum of bombers we can launch (I guess all but 27 Nells on the whole map were attacking Wyndham in this turn) and all this for no result. Don´t know what is more depressing, the hit rate or the damage die rolls... never seen that before...[:@]

I guess even in real life 331 high exp bombers would have been able to achieve more hits on those big static targets in port. And in real life I guess 4 of those bombs (even if they would have been the 500kg bombs used in real life) would cause major damage to a British carrier even if it wouldn´t sink it would be no surprise if it would be a write off...

KB launched the sweep in the afternoon, the British carriers with Seafires aboard weren´t able to launch fighters but the one with Martlets could still launch fighters. This after suffering at least 4 800kg bombs... [8|][8|]

Miller stated in his email that it was a bold move and that he now has two heavily damaged carriers but it could have gone worse. He asked if I would try to finish them off next turn. I won´t, the airfield at Lautern is 100% inoperational and all my other pilots need rest from flying at looong range. And I guess Miller would have 200 fighters on Cap next turn (to take away that info, he didn´t!!!! Next turn we spotted only a good dozen fighters over the damaged carriers!!! What is he thinking?)

But look at the losses of this turn... what can I say about Allied flak and what about Allied heavy bombers. I guess we would have to be super lucky if at least CV Formidable would go down, I seriously doubt it. So this means we have probably two CVs over 50 sys damaged and one below 50 sys and so those carriers won´t show up in the next 6-10 months. This leaves the Allied with 2 operational US CVs at the moment and this will also give us the chance and time to prepare against the Allied offensive out of Timor. With only 2 CVs it´s impossible to advance further. But of course the airfield at Koepang will cause us major trouble, especiall if we can´t bombard it due to mines (our own) and PTs or we don´t do any damage with our bombardments.

with the upcoming Allied assault on the SRA with all it´s major resource bases soon (guess within the next 6 months) being in range of Allied heavy bombers we have to seriously think about where to get the resources and oil from. From India resources (which we have conquered already and where we can draw a lot of resources from - at least for the next 12 months hopefully) but where do we get the needed oil when shipping to Palembang will be in danger of being attacked by Allied bombers. I hope to at least hold off the 4Es on long range naval attack but as soon as the enemy is 8 hexes from Palembang, there won´t be a real chance to bing out the oil. Soooo, only other place with oil is: RUSSIA!!! [:D]

China also has a small oil field at Lanchow and we will take that base within the next couple of weeks hopefully if the Chinese aren´t able to stall our offensive in the North again. While I absolutely denied of even thinking about an invasion of Russia a couple of months game time ago, Miller´s move on the SRA more or less forces me to think about attacking Russia to seize the oil we need. Of course this could give Miller also the chance to fly in heavy bombers from Alaska and also the P-38 will reach Russia from Kiska. But the P-38 numbers are limited and we would of course throw more or less all we have at the Russian airfields in the first days to keep them down.

We will see... This new situation just forces us to think different! [;)]

the Swordfish aren´t my problem, they will upgrade to Avengers in a year and if those Swordfish run into Cap, I guess the Swordfish is the ac in the game that can take the least damage and it´s dead.

The problem will be the 30+ Corsairs for each carrier in 10 months...

Seems like Miller has a new wonder weapon... Coronados out of Northern Australia are spotting EVERY single of my ships in range, they sink at least three barges every turn and today they put a bomb into CVE Chuyo that was sitting at Kendari under an umbrella of at least 250 fighters...

the only good thing was that I had luck with the damage die roll... only 14 sys damage in the end...

Unfortunately I was right with my assumption when my sub was attacked by the British! I have to say I was shocked to encouter this British cruiser sqadron... we had Admiral Tanaka in command of our bombardment TF and thank god we launched a long lance attack at the beginning of the engagement. Nevertheless of the hits we achieve on the enemy cruisers, we really suffer also. I had this TF going into position yesterday and I´m really getting predictable... this was the alert for Miller that I will try another (desperate) naval bombardment and so he ordered his cruisers to engage our TF.

The British are as experienced in night battles as we are and it was a good idea of Paul to send the Brits instead of the Yankees. Guess we were lucky in the end that we did not suffer more damage on the cruisers while the British cruisers suffered a couple of hits. We did lose two DDs in this engagement though, second class DDs but still DDs that are precious for the fight against Allied subs...

another round and I was not really happy to see the nav battle screen popping up again... We put a couple of 8 inch shells more into the enemy cruisers but none is confirmed sunk. The enemy DDs sink two of my DDs, in total we lost 3 DDs today. Two of my heavy cruisers were damaged (bringing the total of damaged heavy cruisers to 6 now!). The enemy lost a DD (probably) and had 3 heavy cruisers heavily damaged with another one on fire. I hope that at least one will be lost, otherwise it was a clear Allied victory...

two things are disturbing here. First: I was dumb enough not to set my bombers on nav/airfield attack and so my bombers did not go after the damaged enemy cruisers and second: we only destroy 4 bombers while we lose half a dozen ac to ops...

it´s just not worth it... [8|]

Miller moved some of his ex carrier based fighters and torp bombers to Koepang and they attack our burning cruiser just four hexes away from their base... the torp bombers miss and the 500lb bomb hit doesn´t do much damage while bouncing off... the 18 Zeroes leeking from KB helped a bit...

KB was set to nav/airfield attack and while it was good weather in the am phase, KB was clouded in the pm phase and therefor didn´t launch the airfield strike... [8|]

a bad day Gentleman!

Sub attack near Kendari at 33,71

Japanese Ships
ML Kurokami, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage [8|]
APD APD-2

Allied Ships
SS KXV

the usual happening in one of my ports where at least two dozen DDs are sitting... one of my second class MLs is lost... perhaps that´s good to lose MLs, so I can´t lay many mines that my own ships will hit as soon we lose a base... [:o]

Japanese Ships
SS RO-64, hits 8, on fire

Allied Ships
AK Red Jacket, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

AK Timber Rush

This must be a resupply attempt! Even a light cruiser is in this TF... Didn´t spot the damn TF moving towards Lautern bt RO-64 hits a big AK. In return the sub receives a lot of near misses and a hit, forcing the sub to retreat to Kendari with 40+ sys damage. Another sub was hit by a Catalina West of Broome today... and of course the Coronados scored two times on my barges...

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

we launch 103 bombers against this resupply attempt and if you wonder why we don´t score more hits, easy explanation: CL Adelaide was sunk quite fast and then 80% of my bombers still tried to attack it and so didn´t attack the TF... this is one of my favourite features of the game... still trying to attack sunken ships and then turning home with the bombload instead of dropping it on the ships of the same TF just 200 feet next to the sunken ship...

Japanese long range torpedo bombers sunk the light cruiser Adelaide during attacks near Koepang! Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

"BIRMINGHAM' Class Cruiser ordered from Cockatoo Island Shipyard, Sydney, and Australia in 1914. Build was delayed until adequate material was available and the ship was laid down on 20th October 1917. Although she was launched on 27th July 1918 her completion was leisurely until 5th August 1922 when commissioned for training duties. In 1924 she was deployed with HM Battlecruisers HOOD and REPULSE, HM Cruisers DANAE, DELHI, DAUNTLESS, DRAGON and DUNEDIN as part of the Dominion Cruise Squadron during tour by HRH The Prince of Wales. Later she served on the China Station. Old design made her of small value as a fighting unit and she was withdrawn from service to refit and placed in Reserve. In view of the political situation the ship was taken in hand to modernise the ship, which involved reducing her armament and conversion of all boilers to burn oil fuel. As a result only three funnels were needed. Three 4" HA guns were fitted for AA defence and the submerged torpedo tubes were removed. This work began in late 1938 and was completed in March 1939.

We had to move out our carrier TFs to attack the shipping at Koepang but of course NONE of my carriers launched a strike the whole day even though weather would have allowed it! Hurrey! But of course Koepang launched a strike, unfortunately against my weaker TF with the CVEs in it. Allied fighters even get the bounce when being on escort and so even the low experienced land based US pilots are performing very well against my high exp carrier based pilots... this attrition will make us teethless within the next couple of weeks... both CVEs are hit hard but will make it. One Allied torp is enough to nearly sink a CVE but 4 x 800kg AP bombs AND a torp isn´t even enough to heavily damage a British carrier as seen at Wyndham...

Luck has definetely switched sides since day one of the invasion of Koepang...
