This is a problem with wide screen monitors, which are becoming common place.  If you play in windowed mode, the game proportions will be correct.  To do this, change the properties of the link to start the game.  You will see a path to the exe to start the game, add

-w

outside the quotations with a space between the closing quote and the -

i have a widescreen monitor and set it so that it was a fixed aspect ratio - this means that i always have "black bars" across the side of the screen (unless i reset the aspect ratio), but WITP respects the setting so there is no distortion during gameplay.

i had to fiddle with the video driver to get this to happen (NVIDIA Control panel in my case.)

My monitor (Dell 2408WFP) handles screen 'Wide' modes internally without bothering the video driver. It is also 1920x1200 rather than true 'widescreen' 1920x1024 so gives a better compromise between widescreen movies and stretching of computer program displays.

Check this thread on the BOB/BTR forum for the effects of screen stretching: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1960548

Every rig is different so just maximise the advantages of your personal setup.

Reg.
