Scenarios? Can we create some?

Post by NefariousKoel »

Just curious if there will be some kind of scenario editor.

I realize the maps will be limited to what comes with it, just wondering if we can create different setups & VCs on them.

Yes, that is the plan. The editor that we use to create the current scenarios is simple. We hope to include a prettied up version in the final game.

What type of scenarios one might create would be dependent on how the AI deals with objectives and understanding dynamic changes throughout the game. So this leads to two questions that might make a better scenario editor:

A. Is the AI programed per scenario via a scripted plan?

or is it:

B. Is the AI "independent", and can achieve objectives by a plan it comes up with dynamically?

If it is A., then an easy to use interface is necessary for dealing with this scripting to make it usable by the average player. Way-points, triggers and the like. Think "Operation Flashpoint" for the best possible interface for this type of method.

If B., then simply give us a way of placing counters on the map. Easy!

One other thing to be considered is allowing designers to create briefings for the start of the scenario, maybe with an image for a picture of the map, an atmospheric etc.

Other pertinent questions:

Can the player add maps to the game if they so choose to make one?

Counters?

Yeah, it will completely depend on the functionality of the editor and mod friendliness.

The answer on the A & B question is...Yes... it does both. So, you'll be able to set objectives, stance of the AI (attack and defend), tell it to exit units, etc...but some of the more fancy things, such as rescuing little girls, moral choices such as whether to eliminate a group of scientists you discover, or briefly switching the game engine to real time as you attempt to escape a Soviet assault, will only be possible with additiona coding.

That's great, Mark. Being able to make our own scenarios makes keeps it close to its board gaming roots, and will be another good selling point. If we can't make our own maps, I hope there are a few "generic" enough maps that we can do some battles outside of Stalingrad.

It looks like it's going to be a terrific looking game. Waiting for it is tough!

Tell me about it...I totally didn't understand the magnitude of this undertaking, but now that I see light at the end of the tunnel, I get more excited every day.

Glad to hear the end, or is that the beginning, is near. Can't wait.[X(]

I would want to make the campaign. Stalingrad, end to end and side to side. The ability to make this scenario is the only reason I would consider buying this title.

I have a ton of ASL (Squad Leader) scenarios that I would like to see recreated. I played a number of them rebuilt for Combat Mission and many were very enjoyable. Hill 621 comes to mind...
