Is this gamey? (No Greasylake please)

Post by vettim89 »

Playing Bib B 1.4, September 1943. Through poor operational control by CINPAC, the three CVE's with VCT are gone. I only have one CVE with a VCT on it now (just arrived), but I have six CVE with VR on them

Would it be gamey to offload the VR and put a VMF or VF on them? I need a few CVE with VR but not six.

(before anybody chimes in, I know to set the VR to no replacements once they are off loaded)

I don't see it as gamey (they are your assets , use them as you see fit), but consider this , are you eating your "seed corn"? Eventually you will have lots of CV's. After an action , you will need lots of replacement aircraft if your big CV's are going to stay in the fight. And CV TF's move fast. CVE's can't stay up with them , it's usually easier to stash them in various areas (like replenishment groups) so that the CV's always have some nearby. Gamey , probably not , the real question you might want to ask is "is it wise?". [:)]

I wouldn't really have a problem with it if I were your opponent.  The CVEs that use VRs in-game, flew combat missions as well.  The "VR" type is a game mechanism designed to mimic a role of the CVEs to provide replacement AC.  But CVEs were obviously also used for other offensive missions as well.

Frankly, once your VR squadrons are small enough to fit on the ship without over-loading it (with no replacements), you can fly missions as usual with your CVEs with VR squadrons.

I did not realize they would fly missions once the VR's shrunk down. Very low EXP though. That said, I have all my VR set at 90% training. Besides minimal increases in EXP, ops losses help pull down the air group sizes

Thanks for the advice though. As far as needing the VR's in the future, this would be a temporary move as I have a large number of CVE's with VCT due in the next six months. Because of some good fortune on my part I am fortuantely/unfortunately close enough to Saigon to trigger Kamikaze's on 1 January 1944. I need to make hay while the sun shines and having a few more combat CVE's at this point would be a help.

As soon as my CVE+VRs arrive at Hawaii I always offload all the air unit to Hilo (DO NOT accept replacmeents set), add planes until 30-33 a/c each and set to 90% training for a few months.
When it's time for an Op I load up all the airgroups and move those CVEs to the main staging base, off load one air unit from each CVE (so I've got two with Fs and one with TBs or DBs). The CVEs then go in a Replen TF to support the fleet CVs and provide cover for the Replen and Transport TFs. Once their air units deplete through replening the CVs they go back to the staging base, swap out VR units and go back to supporting main fleet.
The depleted airgroups then manually take on replacements and start over with training.

Saigon?!

Awe crap.

I'm glad you pointed that out. I was about to say that I thought Kamis were within range of home islands, but alas you are very correct!

It does say, "By sea only" tho.

But I'll be wary from this point out in my own PBEM game!

Thanks!

I wouldn't call it gamey if you were playing against me. After all, the US Navy used the CVEs in the role they were needed, they were not locked into a single role for the duration of the war.

Can you imagine Admiral King telling Admiral Nimitz: "I'm sorry Chester, but those carriers are reserved for ferrying replacements. Even though you don't have enough other carriers to get the job done you simply can't use them to fly combat missions." Yeah... I don't see that happening.

Yes 15 hexes by sea from Saigon Takao and/or Tokyo. I can tolerate the other two but including Saigon in here stinks as far as I am concerned

That image of the conversation described made me laugh. Very nice.
