Platform and scenario editor questions

Post by myersd97 »

Hello. I am new to this game (loved the original versions years ago), and I am trying to work the platform and battleset editors. For reference I have Vista and Office 2007 with Access 2007.

Battleset Editors
- whenever I try to create and save a battleset, the Make Battleset button results in an incorrect file name error. What is considered a valid filename?

In the platform editor, the only way I can access the data is to convert them to 2007. When I do that , they come back empty and will not load data sets. What can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks!

Welcome [8D].  We'll keep improving the game, maybe not with lightning speed but we're still going.

You haven't installed the game within the Program Files directory have you?  That would cause some permissions problems.  Barring that...

Platform Editor (PE).  I prefer not to convert, see:
Q: How do I open the Platform Editor for the first time?
A: http://www.advancedgaming.biz/wiki/main/index.php?title=HCCE:PE_Guide
Also, once you have the editor open, click "Import New Database" to import from whatever commondb.res is currently in the HCE directory.  Then you should see the data.

Battleset Builder
Are you running the 2008.044 version of the game and editor?  If not it may serve you well to download the update from Matrix.  If you are already on the 2008.044 we can take a look at your log.  It is called BSBuilder.log in the BSBuilder subdirectory of your HCE install (in my case, D:\Games\HCCE\BSBuilder\BSBuilder.log).  Zip up that file and send it to HC3@harpgamer.com and we'll have a lot more material to work with.  It is a plain text file and no identifying information is sent.

Thanks for the incredibly quick response.   Seems that moving the game away from the Programs Files directory did the trick for both issues.

Appreciate the help!!!

Excellent.  Vista got fairly smart security-wise and locked down the Program Files directory quite a bit, removing the permissions to change files by default.  All of us programmers should be putting the changing data files (scenarios, databases, preferences) within the user's profile while the stuff in Program Files stays static.

It is easy to complain about Microsoft changing the rules but then again doing it the Vista way has been their suggested approach since Windows 2000 even if their own MS Office product didn't join the party until somewhat later.  That's my unrequested short explanation [:)].

More Questions

Post by myersd97 »

I was able to make a new battleset and make some new installations, etc in that battleset. Unfortunately, today I can't seem to get any new installations to work from the editor to the battleset.. They are certainly there in the database, but when I recreate the battleset it will not show them. The ones I added a couple of days ago do show up. Am I missing some steps again? Also, is there a really in-depth platform editor tutorial anywhere? Thanks!

If you edited the HCDB you cannot add any more installations. The maximum number of entries you should have in any annex (ships, subs, planes, loadouts, each weapon type, installations) is 2047 (theoretically 2048 but there are off by one errors here and there). So if you want to add installations you can't, you will have to sacrifice (re-make) some existing ones into the installations you desire.

What DB editing guide exists is at: http://www.computerharpoon.com/wiki/mai ... 44BE_Guide

Thanks!   I was kind of afraid it was a size limit, since I had added the one and it took.  Appreciate the link!
