Post by cantona2 »

May have already been asked but have any of the dev's come across this old foe in any of the test runs?

Cheers

Oh yes. That was the main reason me and Forests game came to an end. Popped up after we upgraded along with several other issues.

Thanks for the reply YH. Guess the Synch Bug is a wider WitP issue.

Its in the engine. Only a total re-write will solve it. It was there in UV, WitP, that battleship one whatever its name is and AE.

To clarify, the sync bug hit YH's game because of a version change and once it hit, it stayed in that case, but that may be because of the install/upgrade process with the beta versions and file swaps. In general, it's much less prevalent, we've had multiple PBEMs go on without it and I've had a few where I've upgraded and was only out of sync for a turn or two. Another sync bug was nailed just this last build and we've introduced a "lock animations" feature to PBEMs which eliminates the skipping animations cause of sync bugs (now it just speeds them way up if you hit Escape).

Our goal is to be sync bug-free at release and I think we're pretty close to that in my experience if all players stay on the same version. With that said, WITP is complex enough and the sync bug (in dozens of forms) has been around long enough that I can't guarantee we'll achieve that goal, but we're already much closer to it than the original WITP.

Regards,

I'm almost afraid to say this (don't want to jinx it) but the synch bug IS becoming less frequent. In my current AE test PBEM, we've had four instances where we could have gone out of synch (upgrades to new exes), and it happened once.

. . .

Another sync bug was nailed just this last build and we've introduced a "lock animations" feature to PBEMs which eliminates the skipping animations cause of sync bugs (now it just speeds them way up if you hit Escape).

. . .

Thats the first I have heard of this and correct me if I am wrong, but that is the leading cause of getting out of sync (ie. hitting esc. to get out of animations). My sole PBEM game got hit with the sync bug and it never went away. It got to the point where I stopped watching my replaying entirely because it was almost 100% different from what 'really' happened (I was Allies).

So just by getting that 'lock animations' functional will make a huge difference I am sure.
