A squadron of out of fuel PT boats attacks a fast transport TF... those PT boat crews must be good at paddling, they made it to 1000 yards of my cruisers, beating up CA Takao with cal. 50 and 20mm Oerlikons. So many aspects of this game are soooo poorly modelled, the devs seemed not to test their own game as otherwise it would have hurt them in the a$$...

wth? Out of 250+ undamaged fighters set to 80% Cap we see the amazing number of 88 in the air, not even 35%!!!! Looks like I´m fooling myself when thinking my radar equipped ships would help. What a joke. After the initial bounce phase for us, when we achieved something like a 20:1 kill rate, the bounce went to the Allied which then achieved nearly a 1:1. Again, the Tojo is a poor dogfighter. The escorts kept our fighters off the bombers of which we only took one down and then those bombers achieve quite a good hit rate on my fast, radar equipped DDs... what a crappy day... [:@]

Two days ago we took down 150 Allied fighters over Lautern and today 231 were on escort again... [8|]

DD Makigumo, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x LB-30 Liberator bombing at 10000 feet

then of course more bomber attack my DDs, achieving more hits. As it looks now, one DD is lost, the other three could make it, if not attacked again... my Cap seems to be not existing anymore...

total losses of today:

Image

doesn´t look that bad but again I have to wonder when people are saying they save more than 50% of their pilots being shot down over their bases. Out of the 24 fighters shot down over Koepang, 21 pilots were lost! So how can that be and what am I doing wrong then? One pilot bailed out wounded and was rescued so it would make "only" 20 pilots lost if this one comes back again...

this is the good news of the day, the unescorted Exeter is attacked by I-19 West of Broome and two out of six torps slammed into the already heavily damaged heavy cruiser. I hope this will be enough to sink the ship...

my ships at Koepang are attacked again, again the fighters on Cap are a wet joke, we´re below 40% again, this time I´ve set them to 90%!!! [:@] The Kittyhawks had no chance but hey, the Warhawks got the bounce and achieved a kill ratio in their favour... We´re not getting our fighters airborne and we´re not even getting the bounce above our own base, even when our fighters are set to 15.000ft and the Allied escorts are flying at 8.000ft. total losses of today:

Image

the last days have clearly showed what I knew the first day when Miller landed troops at Lautern, it will be impossible to do anything in this region as soon as he begins flying attacks out of his level 6 airfield of Lautern. Even though I take down more aircraft than I lose, I also lose precious pilots and I now I also have started losing ships. Soon the Allied Army will have marched to Dili, coming over 120 miles of trails and being very well supplied it seems. Then Dili will fall soon and with another level 5 airfield on Timor, there will then be 550 Allied aircraft on Timor that will lay waste up to an area around Java and South of Borneo! The fact that my fighters don´t get airborne will be the biggest issue and will make defense impossible.

I just don´t get this game and it´s routines... the last 4 weeks there were NEVER more than a couple dozen fighters on Cap over Chungking. Well, today saw probably 95% of the fighters on Cap in the air. Of course we were once again hit by the weather flaws of "advanced weather on". Again three bases should have attacked, again two were clouded including the sweep base of course. Weather forecast was good, we end up with thunderstorms that make flying impossible. [8|]

And hey, I don´t want to forget to mention that the Allied got 100% of the engagemen the allmighty B O U N C E... Allied radar...

at least we didn´t take losses over Timor today. Doesn´t make the disaster over Chungking any better when two elite Zero daitais were shredded by the low exp British fighter bombers that get the mighty radar boost...

hopefully those Chinese units surrender soon... I proved to be a stupid dork once again when I try to attack an Allied base today. No matter where it is on the map, the outcome at this stage of the war is a mess for us and I should just accept that attacking Allied bases that are defended by flak and fighters is just not worth it and should only be done if absolutely necessary and then only in force. Of course the weather can make using force impossible as seen today when two of three bases were clouded in...

how is this decrease in assault value possible? This can´t be from starving only, the Rangoon CD unit that is here also dropped to 0 av this turn. There must be Allied transports doing an evacuation. Doesn´t matter, my tanks have arrived and will attack in two days to kill off the remaining units.

a nice statement of Paul: [:)]

Well you have certainly stalled my advance in Timor......I had hoped to have the whole Island taken by now.

This gives a little hope but doesn´t change the overall situation, the invasion of Timor is putting us in a desperate situation already.

The Allied are attacking Timor with 210 bombers or more daily and they lose 4 bombers today, flying at max range against a flak defended target. Their fat must be somewhere around 40. We fly 2 hexes against an undefended target with fatigue 2 and also lose 3 bombers. Is there something strange?

as expected, Delhi falls easily today. Miller was able to evacuate a lot of troops but that doesn´t matter, they are now sitting at Karachi to be built up again and I don´t care if Karachi gets 200 av more or not, there will be thousands of av within the next year and then they will still not be able to force me out of the urban hex. Only way will be to get them out with convoys and that´s what Miller will probably do.

a successful day for our ground forces. First Delhi falls and now the first corps of the Chinese units North of Sian surrenders. We score 352 points for ground losses and went through the 15.000 points mark being at 15.049 now! [:D] I don´t know for sure but I guess I will break my all time record for Allied ground losses in this game. Nearly half of my total victory points from Allied ground losses. [8D]

Miller´s troop strenght at Dili is further increasing, another division has arrived. Will be interesting how many he will bring in the end and if I will be able to inflict losses in our wooden hex.

this time I´ve set two bases to attack Chungking and thank god my sweep goes in today... needless to say that our sentais were bounced for the whole duration of the engagement. The fact that I again used my best sentais available produces still a "good" result for us, would I have sent 70 exp pilots, the kill rate would probably be 2,5:1 for the Allied. Ridicoulos when you see 50 Hurricanes endlessly bouncing 84 Oscars. Guess I´ve seen the "Hurricane squadron bounces Oscar sentai" a hundred times+ this turn. [>:] Reason for this are 5 radar equipped base forces. And hey, not to forget the fact that two of my sentais were coming in higher than the Hurricane max altitude is, but I know that alt doesn´t matter anyway. Still funny when radar magically increases the max alt of an aircraft by a couple of thousand feet.

then the bomber strike goes in and the second strike always kills off the Cap at will. I would have been better off just sending another sweep because as you can see, we did not destroy any significant numbers of ac on the ground. And what does this mean? This means the radar equipped Chinese base forces enabled the Allied to launch 99% of their fighters on Cap. Guess it was 100% and the destroyed ac was damaged before. Not bad eh? When I look at the fighters over Koepang that take off and I get 100 fighters out of 290 undamaged fighters then this is just depressing.

Not the Corsair, not the Thunderbolt, not the Lightning are uber weapons, Allied radar makes them absolutely uber in the game.

I can only be happy about those fighter bombers attacking my units at Chungking, otherwise those would have also launched 100% to engage my incoming strikes. Hopefully there isn´t a base in China left that has 20.000 supplies, this would mean that the British and Australian squadrons in China don´t get any reinforcements.

Hi Castor

SOmething that occurs to me about the bounce you are seeing - bounce is based on detection levels.  The defender gets the bonus of any sound detector/radar.  You can improve your detection level before you go in by reconning the base with a couple of squadrons for a couple of days before the sweep/bombing raid.  You will still find you get bounced at the start, but after a couple of rounds you should see the battle even out and even get the bounce towards the end.  If you already are reconning......well then things are buggered!

Really low detection=bounce? Well I guess that might be why my sweeps on bases like Manila and Singapore saw no bounces, since they have no detection right now, and I have been reconning constantly.

Hi

Recon unfortunately never helped me. It´s good for increasing bombing accuracy and nukes of course but I´ve never experienced a difference in a2a. I know that radar does make the difference though. And I don´t have radar while the Allied cover the whole map with their radar sets and AWACS.

Aircraft Attacking:

We have 290 undamaged fighters at Koepang set to 90% Cap. This means 44,83% engage the enemy bombers. Most of the bombers turn back, only very few are lost and 40 bombers dropping their bombs are enough to kill as many fighters on the ground as we take down enemy bombers. [8|] I don´t want to see all my fighters engaging the enemy but having 55%+ all the time sitting on the ground waiting to get bombed is a joke. Unfortunately this game doesn´t know something like fighter took off but wasn´t able to engage the enemy. Would still be better than sitting on the ground, rowed up and bombed.

the British attack in the afternoon, the Wellingtons are as hard to down as a B-17. What a depressing day. Miller told me he ordered a 200+ fighter sweep from Lautern to go in first but weather kept them from flying.

Image

The Blenheim are absolutely obsolete and will soon be faced out, I´m sure about that. Then it would have been a 1:1 in bombers for fighters lost. Tomorrow will 100% sure see a follow on attack by hundreds of Allied bombers again and then the kill rate will got up to 3:1, 4:1 or 5:1 in favour of the bombers.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/03/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1040 encounters mine field at Koepang (28,77)

Allied Ships
PT PT-83, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Type 93 mine kills a PT, the rest of the PT squadron will now paddle back to Lautern as they are out of fuel... [8|]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77 [8|]

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 66
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 23
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 25

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 148
P-38G Lightning x 13

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 9 destroyed, 12 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 17 destroyed
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 22 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 61 destroyed, 26 damaged
P-38G Lightning: 1 destroyed, 11 damaged

a totally ridicoulos result. Why? Not because the overall kill rate is off but the kill rates of the different combatants. Well, the Oscar holds his own, killing a Warhawk and damaging 7 more for 1 Oscar killed. The Tojo lost 11:1 against the Warhawks , this was totally crazy and again proves that the Tojo seems to be that bad that it can´t be used at all in Nikmod as soon as enemy fighters are near. Don´t forget that my pilots are still in the 80 exp range and the Warhawks at 60 (according to info from Paul). The Zero was more or less unbeatable and killed the Warhawks 8:1 or better. Well, the first appearance of the Lightning was depressing also, kill rate was 7:1 in favour of the Lightning. With the given aircraft stats, Nikmod seems to be producing some radical results.

The most depressing fact is really the underperformance of the Tojo in Nikmod. The problem about it is the totally LOW maneuveribility, it´s performing like a light bomber but not like a fighter. And this will put us in big problems because what can I do now? Forget about hundreds of IJA fighters because they are 100% crap? I could also use Nates, against Allied figthers, wouldn´t make much difference. And all this when my Tojos are flown by ELITE pilots. Ridicoulos. And the Tony comes in in 9/43, by then the whole SRA will be lost already, I guess the same goes for the war by then as I won´t be able to ship out oil by then.

The Tojo can only be used outside of Allied fighter range it seems, so as it stands now this would mean using it NORTH of Kendari only! [8|] Waiting for the bombers now...

wonder why the British didn´t attack Koepang. They could have additionally destroyed a couple of dozen fighters on the ground, but I´ve lost enough anyway...[>:]

Japanese flak in this version of Nikmod isn´t any more dangerous (when it comes down to kills) than in stock it seems. Dili should be a deadly place for low bombing aircraft...

Allied bombardments will be enough to wear down our troops. Wonder how the enemy gets enough supply over 120 miles of trails for this Army.

and here are th losses for today:

whereas even Chinese base forces at this date are enough to launch 100% of the Allied fighters on Cap and having ENGAGE them my strikes, we are stuck with 45% at best and this always means that we will lose a couple of times more ac than the enemy. And there´s nothing I can do about that, Japanese fighters just don´t take off and 55% are always staying on the ground to get bombed. And of course 130 fighters in the air are far from sufficient to scare the Allied when your opponent knows that 130 fighters wouldn´t take down more than 40 Allied bombers anyway.

IMO the kill rate of Japanese fighters vs Allied bombers isn´t that bad or totally off, for 4 attacking fighters you get one bomber shot down. I don´t know how that looked like in real life but it seems reasonable for me. The overall fighter kill rate was ok IMO, the kill rates of the involved combatants was totally off, I doubt a 80+ exp Tojo sentai shouldn´t lose 22:2 against Warhawks with 60 exp pilots. The biggest issue I have are the fighters that are just sitting on the ground. I don´t know how the historical Cap levels that engaged incoming strikes looked like, 40 or 45% ENGAGING the enemy doesn´t sound strange to me, but I wonder if 55 - 60% wasn´t even taking off. I don´t know, in every case, this makes my defenses impossible and Miller can cheer about hundreds of undamaged fighters on the ground for the next 14 months. Then Japanese base forces will receive 40 Type 13 radar sets / month and this should get more ac in the air. I only doubt that the campaign will last that long. I´m pretty sure the game will see a surrender of my forces earlier than 1/44. I´m now looking forward to a fighter that comes in in mid 43 at best - the Tony - so this again reflects my desperate situation at the moment.

Once in a while there´s a life other than WITP too

Rubbish! Pure myth Image

After all these turns, hope you have some kind of punch bag near the computer? And it's not going to get any nicer. [:D]

Why for the love of God you decided to play this mod? Were you obliged to play it (replay match) or you voluntereed?

Regarding these constant attacks on Koepang, wouldn't it be better to LRCAP it from near by bases? Can you post some screenshots (SRA, China & India situation)?

no, I came up with the idea to play NM again! [;)] There are some problems with the mod IMO but the overall situation is still better than playing stock. I´ve never tried CHS or RHS, I had BigB games and stock campaigns going.

some things that I´m not happy about aren´t related to the mod as this is just how the game engine works, the mod increases the defficiences of the engine in some cases though. For example: Japanese fighters vs Allied bombers is far more realistic than stock but of course this then means you lose far more Japanese fighters on the ground because far more Allied bombers get through. The performance of the Tojo, well that´s only a mod thing...

The only real issue I have is the fact that normally 55% of my undamaged fighters sit on the ground and get torched.

I could LRCAP Koepang from Waingapu (sp?), the base three hexes North of it or from Maumere, 5 hexes North. Waingapu is a level 2 airfield at the moment so I could set 100 fighters on LRCAP, would mean perhaps 25-35 over Koepang but that wouldn´t be anything else than annoying for Miller. A 200 4E attack every third or fourth day is enough to keep the base closed and he could fly a 150 fighter sweep from Lautern before every attack so it wouldn´t really hurt him I guess. But I have had this in mind too.

I wasn´t able to do a turn yesterday (which is quite a rare occassion [;)]) but I will do some screenshots today and will post them tomorrow.
