Sniper rifles accuracy

Post by arras »

I am using SVD for some time now ...some 5-6 battles and I am getting feeling there is something wrong with that rifle and for that matter with all snipers since I did try Einfield Enforcer to see difference with the same result.

I am having lot of misses, even more than with assault rifle or LMG. It is just feeling, I was not writing some statistics. Does somebody have similar experience?

I was using it with 3 different mercs with accuracy between 85-90. Laser target marker equipped, targeted shots. But bullets seems to fly in to blue sky. Not always but a lot. I do miss about 60-70% at different ranges.

The same mercs does much better with assault rifles. Whats wrong?

What stance are you fireing from? Standing, kneeling or Prone? Sniper rifles work best prone.

Well, all weapons probably works best from prone arn't they? I am using all three positions according to tactical situation.

What is your experience with sniper rifles? Do you use them and did you find them useful?

only question I would have, is are you sure of your line of sight to the target ?

most times I Have a good LOS I hit with my Snipers (just saying, just because you have a red dot, or sighted target, does not mean you have a good shot)

Yes I do. I never fire if merc complain he can't see something. If enemy is vissible (red icon over) and merc do not complain when receiving order to fire, I assume he have line of sight to target.

no, most times, when he complains he has a good LOS to target, alot of my kills come from guys they say they can't see

in the upper area, there is a post about LOS and some numbers you can change, so you can see what the Merk sees

the game does give you a lot of "poor" shots, or targets that you really can't see, and then skips over others you can

(think the post is FOV up in the war room)

OK thanks, I'll look at it. But then, all weapons would have the same problems not just one type of them.

I haven't noticed anything specifically wrong with the SVD or sniper rifles in general. Dagger was a killing machine for me with his SVD in my first run through of the game. However, sometimes it seems that if I shoot at the same part of the body on the same target....and miss the first time, then I'll miss on the second shot, too. But if I change to a different part of the body after the first miss, then I will most often get a hit on that second shot.

Reinforce, have you found data to support that in the game files? In my experience, I haven't noticed that being prone improves accuracy with any weapon. But it would be very interesting to know if the developers have actually coded stance into the percentage-to-hit calculations.

Ya I'm pretty sure I remember seeing something about it. But I can't recall where, I'll look it up later tonight. From my own personal experiance it helps. Alot to be honest. But the LoS issues make prone very hard to use correctly. So I would advice you use just kneeling for shooting.

arras- I agree. I have given up on sniper rifles. they seem to not have the accuracy nor damage under any circumstances. Snipers have always been my favorite, but not in this game and I have tried in many ways to use them. they just aren't worth the high ap.

You made me curious. I said that I have given up on sniper rifles so I tried again. I attacked the military base using Forester, Kouro, and Venom all snipers with high accuracy. They had 2 svds' and 1 HKPSG-1. I took different positions in front of the different entrances to the base at a maximum distance allowed by the map. The base is a good place to try this because of the open terrain. I'm sure this is not very scientific or anything but again my experience was the same. Dissappointing. The HKPSG-1 rarely make a hit, maybe 1 in 20 shots with little damage. The svds' were a little better but not much. Once I got a -96 damage with a lucky hit. Usually about 1 in 10 for a hit with -2 to -14 damage. By loading the save I did this several times with about the same results. I then moved a little closer and my 2 RPK-74 rifles held by mercs with a 85 and 87 accuracy did the killing, not the snipers!!!!! In JA2 my favorite weapon was the svd, here I like the RPK-74. But I have only found two of them. It seems to be the most effective weapon with good range and damage.. Next would be the AK105. I have been using those two weapons entirely. I only have three sectors left to take but they are the hardest. The Base, Palace, and the Butsi village.

odd, my Snipers have very good kill rates, later on when you get the fancy one shot buggers, you will pick up on what is a good shot and what is not

got to watch though some of the maps have a lot of little humps and dips on them, so what looks like a clean shot is  most times not (but overall, would say, find what you like and stick to it, I really like Morah with a tripped out Uzi until late in the game)

Pardon my ignorance, but are you referring to types of sniper rifles, as in "fancy one shot buggers?" (of the .50 caliber variety) or mercs with high accuracy?

I 'think' you are referring to the .50 caliber beasts, and if so, which ones can I look forward to finding for sale? So far, none have been on offer for sale and DJ's (I am playing Reinforce's mod).

ahh, maybe should refine that, most of the good Sniper rifles cost enough AP, that you are only going to get off one shot a phase (then you get some of the combat/auto Sniper rifles, that can put out bursts)

but yes, the 50 Cals are one, they come down the road a bit, and are a bit pricey !!!!

but, if you can ambush one of the Murader groups walking around, make sure to pick off the lady with the BIG RIFLE, most times that is a Tupolo (?) (mag fed 50 cal, not as good as a Barrett, but very good)

with CC, I can normally fire around 8 rounds for 8 kills, a bad map is 7-8 for 10 rounds, with the big boys, you don't have much ammo, or for that matter, burn up much ammo

(with the 50 do you have a chance for double kills or at least 3 knock downs with one round, if the placement is right, both are very rare, but have seen them)

I'm still trying to take the base with miserable results from my snipers. A thought just occured to me. Hard Sarge are you using a mod that might affect the rifles? I have the latest patch but no mod. In fact I don't even know how to get a mod. Where are they and how do I get one? Thanks

I have the patch and the Reinforced Mod

go up into the mod section right above here, look for the post about Reinforced mod

download and unzip it into the HG folder (open it, it should have a folder named basic in it, then copy and paste, or move it, into the HG folder and let it over write what is there)

very good mod, only hassle is you will need to restart for it to take effect

would also say to look for a post about FOV, and add in the changes that Reinforced added, that will help you get a view as the Merk really sees it

noname, I'm still playing without any mods. If your sniper misses with the first shot, try aiming at a different part of the target's body for the second shot. This works for me most of the time. Also, make sure you have "max aim" enabled by using the "v" key.
