I've been playing wargames since the late '60s. In all those years, my fondest gaming memories were of playing SPI's War in Europe, on maps that covered an entire ping-pong table, with production charts spread on top of a baby-grand piano. Once a week for two years. When computer games came around, there were a couple of good old DOS games, such as Clash of Steel. Nothing ever came along approaching the fun of the old cardboard-counter board game, which was on just the right scale to be at the same time a great game and a learning tool about WWII.

Now comes along WW2:Road to Victory. I've done a good deal of carping on it over the last few months, because hey ... there ain't never going to be a computer game as good as those old board games. Period.
But after playing Road to Victory PBEM with cpdeyoung, a bit of that good old feeling returned.

Road to Victory is both: a fun game, and a pretty kewl historical learning tool. There are tons of modding options, that few players have explored yet. (Or if they have, they haven't published their mods.) There are a slew of game-time options that can shift the game balance, and still stay within the realm of historical possibilities. Take a look at the 'Road to Where' AARs to get a feel for some of the potential of this game.

Anyone on the fence, or learning of the game the first time. Get this game! Play against the AI a bit, then go for PBEM. Just a fine gaming investment.

I've been playing wargames since the early '60s. I loved SPI's War in Europe, but I also loved John Prados' Third Reich.  WiE was great, the production spiral a work of art, but 3R gave me that strategic sense that was sometimes lost in the details of WiE.  WW2:RtV gives me the same strategic sense of 3R, but with enough granularity that I experience WiE details also.

This game, WW2:RtV is a great bargain in my opinion.  The AI game can be fun and you can try your experimants here.  Then for the greatest pleasure, you can find a great human player, and experience 50 days of tension and combat.  Take a look at the AARs, and follow your gaming sense to a great experience.  Yes, get this game!

I never tried War in Europe, but have heard a lot about it. Everyone who played it talks about it with respect. Third Reich was the second ever game I tried (after the very first - Close Combat), and I liked that a lot. The WWII strategic game that have given me most fun during the years was SPI's European Theater of Operations, however. I was instantly hooked and have returned to it from time and time again. With a couple of extra home rules, it was the perfect mixture of land, air and naval combat.

RTV does give me a little of the ETO-feeling back. My only wish is that the air/naval system was a little more interesting and interactive with the land portion of the game. But you can't have everything and I do realise how difficult it would be to get that interaction working.

Me and my friends play this game every day, and have done that ever since it was released. As it seems now, we will be playing for a long time yet. [:'(]
