South Pacific Scenario No.4?

Post by kev_uk »

Hi,
I am getting my butt totally kicked playing this scenario by the Japs. Its early July 42 and the Japs have really built up Lae in New Guinea, basing remains of its Flight Carrier Groups there are well as a ton of LRBs and over 100 zeros. It has really pounded Port Moresby, landed on Buna and is now working its way over the Kokoda(sp?) pass. Through attrition, it has really reduced my AK & AP transport fleet, so I dont have enough transports left to supply Port Moresby or send troops there - as soon as they dock, the Bettys and Nells arrive along with their mass of zeros and I dont have enough fighters left to counteract. I have lost 4 carriers (yes 4!) to is 3, and now my catalinas have spotted 2 BBs and I have nothing to stop them with. I was really doing well at the start; must have sunk over 70 Japanese ships to my 10, but it seems as if I am now going to loose Moresby.

My question is this: is there an alternative South Pacific scenario instead of this hypothetical one, one where Midway occured? I usually gripe about the AI, but this time, or at least this scenario really has me beat (I think).

Thanks,
Ambassador

There is the Guadalcanal campaign scenario, which starts in August '42 and ends in early February '43.  This is sadly long enough to capture the whole map except Truk, as I discovered in my first battle in WitP (against the AI).

Right now I am playing the allies in the May 42 to February 43 south pacific scenario.  I am running low on fighters too. Now its October 42 and practically all fighters, exept the F4F-3 and F4F-4 are depleted, my commonwealth squadrons are completly out of planes. Wirrways are left but I'd rather shoot my pilots my self then send them up in Wirrways to battle Zeros.Im waiting for the fist P-38s to come on the line. He has killed most of my fighters in repeated carrier raids on PM.
Transports are really short in this scenario and I have lost a lot of them resupplying PM. Now im airlifitng enough supplies in (~ 150 C-47 from Cooktown) to send some medium bombers out hunting his shipping. Heavy Bombers from Cooktown keep Lae down, killing a lot of planes on the ground. If you do not bomb the airfield at Lae at the start, using medium bombers from PM, you will have a hard time once he getts enough fighters there. When I get P-38s and win back the sikes over Port Morseby I will resupply, send in engineers, expand the airfield and try to start heavy bomber raids against Rabaul.

What really annoyes me is the fact that my 500 lb GP Bombs do not hurt his carriers. They do not even penetrate the heavier four ones. The AI is using his carriers foolishly, killing Transports at PM, but as long as I can not hurt them, he does not pay the price he schould have to pay. Four of my Carriers (2 damaged, one almost repaired, one sunk) are in Noumea to cover the Invasion of Lunga, not many Jap planes there, foolish AI.

I should probably start to play against real people.

Both the SoPac and GC scenarios are tough to win as Allies because they don't limit the amount of fuel the IJN gets at Truk. In my PBEM in the GC scenario, my opponent parked the entire Combined Fleet off Lunga and left it there. The RL IJN could not hope to keep all those ships at sea for a few weeks let alone months on end

I just found a modified SoPac scen on Spookys site and am giving it a go. I was really after the campaign from UV - and it would have been good to have a historical scenario. But I digress.

What I miss as well is not being able to send damaged ships back to Pearl Harbour...dont see an option for that. I stick them in Brisbane because of its size 9 port.
