About orphaned carrier squadrons...

Post by Grotius »

I am playing Japan against the Allied AI, and I just had a nice Midway in reverse -- but I did lose Kaga. A couple of her airgroups made it safely to Rabaul before she sank.

My question is: is there any reason I can't put those orphaned airgroups on another carrier? I dimly recall that sometimes CV squadrons act unpredictably if you put them on a different CV, even if their "home" CV is sunk. I know there's a limit of (5?) airgroups per CV, and of course each CV has a limit on the number of aircraft it can carry. But I'm wondering if anything funny will happen if I move Kaga's groups on board, say, Soryu, whose groups are now depleted. Is it safer just to fill up Soryu's own groups -- perhaps by disbanding the Kaga groups into them?

Also: If I disband, can I do so on the carrier deck, or should I move all groups off the CV first? I'm at Truk.

They will act funny if you take the OFF a carrier... it's better if you can keep them on one, but you do have a limit of 5 air units per carrier.

Sometimes you can disband your carrier air unit into another to flesh out an understrength one, but this is sometimes not possible.

If the whole squadron got off, it's fine, and you can deploy it normally.

If the fragments got off (all your squadrons are /1 /2 etc).  You can use these fragments, realatively normally.  Just be careful that they when the escape, they might overload the receiving CVs.  I usually end up keeping them around until another normal (parent) squadron takes some casualties, and then dispand the orphaned fragment to replentish the normal squadron.

Be aware that the fragments of CV squadrons (including normal/parent squadrons from sunk CVs), will often "chase" the parent squadron/CV.

It seems like the Kaga is always the first to bite it.

Yeah, I do have some fragments scattered around several islands in the South Pacific. Perhaps I'll try reuniting them in Truk before I make any decisions. The more I think on it, the more inclined I am to disband Kaga's squadrons into Soryu's, since I'm short on trained pilots anyway.

To do this, should I offload Soryu's squadrons onto the airfield at Truk? Then disband Kaga's squadron into Soryu's; then transfer the newly-merged squadron back onto Soryu?

...then dispand the orphaned fragment to replentish the normal squadron.

Again, be aware this sometimes doesn't work... at least for some units some times for reasons i have NEVER been able to fathom... (it SHOULD work, but i had some fragments that just would never disband, despite being with the right service and the right planes...) [:@] [&:]

Time consuming, since if you offload a squadron while still in port, ALL planes will be damaged...

If you can, you might fly one unit to be disbanded onto the carrier, disband it, repeat... you might have to fly off someone to do this, so fly them to a nearby base rather than offloading to the port you are in.

Thanks for the helpful replies, guys.

Ah right, because the port uses cranes. If it will work to fly a unit onto the carrier and then disband it, I'll try that.

Yeah, I've had this too. We'll see what happens here.

Heh, is it? What's up with that? :)

Guys, you can fly aircraft off of or onto a carrier in the same port as the destination/origin base - by undocking the carrier. If the carrier is docked, the aircraft and loaded by the crane. If the carrier is at sea, even in the same hex, the aircraft will fly.

At least, I've been able to do that...

Yes I have often had problems dispanding one Carrier airgroup element into another, I normally get a message stating that Carrier air groups cannot be disbanded.

Sometimes, the stupid CV captain will decide to dock despite your best efforts, which means that if you neglected to save the turn before the transfer, all your planes are damaged... [X(] [8|]

True enough... I've learned to look at the TF and make sure that it is undocked before transferring a/c.

Yes I find it quite a common problem in CHS, especially in my PBEM game. But it doesn’t seem to be consistent, and I haven’t been able to get the message to happen in test.
