AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/19/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 25 encounters mine field at Maumere (28,73)

Japanese Ships
AP Kiyozumi Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire

A medium sized AP hits a Type 93 mine at a friendly port. Now that is a rare occassion! While Japanese Type 4 and Type 93 mines are only enough to scratch some paint on an Allied AK, it´s enough to put this Japanese AP into sinking condition... flt is at 54 and there are 17 fires, I expect the ship to sink...

I don´t know where all my supply has gone in two turns but the base has 0 supply now! [:@][&:] Two days ago the base had 7.000+ supplies and all my units were fully supplied. Now my units are 50% supplied and no supply is at the base left... another nice feature... I would call it a bug as there´s no reason why all the supply should suddenly vanish... [>:]

the next deliberate attack, perhaps all my supply was given to the Allied attacker... [8|] the first 1:1 attack, we still get only a sh*tty adjusted av even that we defend in a wooden hex. At least this time the Allied suffered slightly more casualties than we did, but with two bombardments we will have lost 1.500 troops more again... the fact that some 15.000 supplies vanished in one turn (7.000 at the base and 8.000 within my troops) will be the reason why I will lose this base... great! Really... great!

Next Allied target are the Fidjis, half a dozen TFs are moving in. Won´t be much of a problem to take the bases and I won´t do anything, it´s not worth it.

that´s no problem when you know that there´s not much resistance. At least I guess he should know that all those island far out aren´t really defended. Why should I... But he will reach a point where it will be painful for him. And instead of moving out of Timor, I´m happy that he disperses his troops down there...

I had two surface combat TFs and two bombardment TFs. This time one surface combat TF had the lowest TF number and the other SC TF had the highest TF number. Which TF attacks the PTs? One of the bombardment TFs of course. God damn, how does this work now? Of course we lose another DD again... Hey, those PTs are so useless... ho ho ho, I´m Santa Clause... how many threads I´ve been involved when people told me that it takes 50 PTs to sink one DD when I´ve experienced the complete opposite and all the AARs I´ve read show the same thing that happens to me... with my actions I must admit that I´m stupid, but how stupid can the game be? There´s 0 (in words: zero) supply at Dili but the Mitchells achieve 35 supply hits? So... how much is 35% of 0?

It´s wonderful when 15.000 supplies just vanish...

Miller flew in more torpedo bombers. Doesn´t matter, the DD only moved one hex after being hit by the PTs so it was dead already...

so, today we killed half a dozen PTs, a dozen ac (out of 200+) and two MSW for the loss of one DD. Points wise a victory for us but everyone knows how borked the victory points are anyway in the game.

Was there something positive this turn? Yes! We didn´t hit a mine!

I don´t know in which phase I am at the moment, I guess we´ve entered the "nothing works for the Japanse anymore phase". Third attack, third time we have hundreds of combat engineers in the hex and the third time we were not able to reduce a fort level. Stupid game...

mmm, the defender has been cut off for months, bombed for the same time (my bombers stopped flying, must be part of the "nothing works anymore phase") and over a dozen art units don´t do 10% of the damage the 5 Allied art units (that are supplied over 120 miles of trails) do at Dili.

the enemy is going in at Nandi, this was somewhat expected. There´s only one IJN base force with CD guns on the Fidjis and it is base at: Nandi [:)] unfortunately it does no damage even though there was no pre invasion bombardment. This is highly careless IMO but Miller gets away with it. What if I would have put a dedicated CD unit here? Oh well...

we LRCAPed Dili today to annoy our enemy and due to the fact that the bombers at Lautern (those that get escorts) are set to nav attack/airfield attack the bombers from Northern Australia come in first. The Mitchells pay a nice toll for their attack, many turn back due to low morale...

10 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet

this is the afternoon phase when Lautern´s bombers are coming in. Even though that the Warhawks are on escort we don´t achieve more than a 2:1... if you think we would bounce them then all I can say: dream on, the bounce is an Allied feature, if it´s happening for the Japanese side, well then it must be a bug...[8|]

we did get a shot at the bombers but didn´t achieve much...

In the end we achieve a 3:1 in ac lost today but we have also lost 13 pilots, which makes it again a 75% loss rate over my own base. Please NOTE the amazing number of Allied 4Es lost... laughable Nikmod result... I was hoping to see at least half a dozen lost but what should I say about 2... remember, 80+ were damaged...

believe it or not, Miller landed no less than 5!!!! divisions at Nandi!!! [X(][X(] What is he doing? Any explanation for this? I´m a fan of using brute force but 5 divisions? lol, that´s a good way to wreck his troops, those five divisions are down to only 40% of their combat strenght just from landing at Noumea and now at Nandi. I´m not sure why he uses 5 divisions for something two bgds would easily achieve but it serves me well. Those divs will need probably 2 months of rest now.

another deliberate attack at Dili and the first time our adjusted av gets adjusted up and the Allied one gets adjusted down. Am also happy about the losses this time... Miller asked me again if I´m going to invade Lautern to cut off his troops at Dili because I´ve used a dozen cruisers yesterday and when I look at the units at Lautern then this becomes more and more an option it seems. After weeks of recon (with Dinah IIs), Lautern shows only 38.000 troops and as recon normally multiplies the enemy troops by 1.5-2 I expect not more than 20-25.000 troops at the base. I can´t remember how many divisions landed at Lautern but I guess there were 6, so this means only 1 would defend the place with a couple of base forces. Hmmm.... landing 6 or 7 divisions could do the trick quite fast... I´m thinking about it...

the enemy TFs are still unloading the whole day, looks like there´s one TF for each division. Well, it´s surely not an abuse of a hr but there´s also no need to use 5 TFs to unload 5 TFs when I moved 250.000 troops on three TFs to India...

looks like the 5 enemy divisions are far from being combat ready, they even have problem to dislodge a SNLF unit and an IJN base force...

Hmmm, I don't know about you, but I'm starting to think I shouldn't have started my game with a mod that has nikmod style A2A adjustments. I mean seriously, ops losses=ridiculous, flak=insane, Allied bombers=absurd.

I think if this is the way the design team sets up AE I want to start playing as Allied a lot more!

the changes that were done were going into the right direction, especially the Uber cap issue. In some cases, like endurance of Allied 4Es and Allied flak it has gone too far. If you don´t have to put Cap over your bases because you can rely on the flak of a couple of base forces than I don´t know... IJN fighters vs US bombers looks good when they meet in the air IMO but overall Allied bombers are just too dominating when they are unescorted. I´m not saying Allied airforce should be dominating by 43, but not unescorted bombers vs bases with 300 Japanese fighters...

I doubt that AE has such radical changes when it goes to undestructable Allied bombers. At least I hope so. Unescorted raids shouldn´t be a cake walk against bases with hundreds of fighters IMO.

Agreed on the uber-cap issue, that was always a problem, although I would sometimes wish the cap was maybe a little bit better. I had 17 out of 18 hudsons break through 25 zeros on cap. I would surely think this would be a slaughter, and I certainly think in reality it would be. What seems to stop the allies is the morale hit more than losses.

yeah, the ONLY thing is the morale that stops them. But that doesn´t happen if they come in with escorts as then the fight vs. the escorts takes long enough that the bomber get through mostly unharmed anyway. It´s a mess...

this is the only way I can hit Allied bases. With high exp Kates from KB that drop laser guided bombs from 26.000ft which is above flak range in Nikmod... but of course this is a very rare happening as I can´t always move KB somewhere to bomb a base... why Kates have a 5 times higher accuracy in bombing than other IJN bombers is beyond my understanding. The Betty drops the same number of bombs but can´t hit anything, even when equally skilled... oh those miracles of Mr. Grigsby... [8|]

losses of today... We killed a nice number of ac at Lautern, but it was more important to close the base. Wonder how I should keep it closed though. [&:] Once again I can only shake my head about the mod though, just look at the losses I took... 17 Japanese ac lost - all to ops! Hey ho - it´s ridicoulos. Attacking a base without a real defense and still my ac crash like they would be flown by green pilots. 80 damaged 4Es return from a 1000 mile trip without a single ac lost... there is something wrong....

Just look at the Tojos! How on earth can I lose 7 Tojos to ops in one day when all they do is fly CAP??? [:@][:@][:@] Stupid!

Sometimes I really ask myself how many bugs there are in the game. Guess this isn´t a bug, but hey, what kind of die rolls are there? I have nearly 300.000 high experienced troops attacking out of supply Chinese at the moment and the deliberate attack causes 1600 casualties within the defender. Miller uses 5 art units at Dili, that have to be supplied over 120 miles of trails and they do nearly 1000 casualties within my INF units! How often do I have to use the word "stupid"?

RE: it goes on...

Post by castor troy »

As mentioned above, here comes the joke of the day. And again, I have to use the word stupid.

The DD was hit by a 20mm Oerlikon! Any comments on the damage? It´s a funny game and no all the Allied fanboys are right, PTs aren´t overrated... lol, a 20mm Oerlikon hit. Glad the DD wasn´t hit twice, as it would sink then... I like that smiley...

unfortunately for us the Allied art units employ tactical nukes already. A deliberate attack of all Allied units here causes 1500 casualties, a bombardment of 5 art units alone causes 800... [:(]

You know, having served on destroyers -and watched sink ex's where equivelant guns have been used -Im not that surprised at a DD having that sort of damage -if a great long burst went marching along the length of you -but the game does'nt tell us that.
One shell -impossible damage -a burst into say a boiler room -yep!

(then again a single 20mm into the main steam crossover Vv in one engine room would have brought my last ship to a terible halt really, reall quick[X(][8|][;)]

i remember an UV AAR in which a japanese barge managed to heavily damage a US sub with a single 20 or 25 mm MK hit. later in the day, the sub went down. that may be a kind of "lucky punch"...like a fighter takeing down a B-17 with a 7.7mm MG burst.

on the other side you see subs hitting mines and the next day crash diving in front of a 6 DD ASW TF... oh well, as a Japanese player I´m used to losing my whole DD fleet to PTs anyway. Has always been so, will never be different in WITP.

besides closing the base it would also be great to score some supply hits, as supply is the most important thing for the Allied ground offensive on Timor... with the airbase being closed Miller can´t move in huge amounts of supply as I would attack those attempts no matter at what costs. So without having his airbase on Timor he won´t have 300 fighters that he could put on Cap to see 250+ in the air and this means he would have to use his carriers to cover such a big style resupply attempt. And this would again mean I would throw in everything I can. The piece meal attacks near Noumea on the enemy carriers were a disaster but around Timor I have several airbases that could launch strikes against carriers near Lautern and with hundreds of ac in the area I´m sure I could cause trouble as long as the enemy is mostly flying F4Fs. We will see... the enemy carriers are expected to be still near Noumea and it will take some time to move them into position, if Miller even wants to do that. But it seems he´s convinced that my 2nd attack on Timor is only a matter of days, the sigint he gets about my divs planning for Australian targets can´t bluff him I guess. [:D]

the fifth deliberate attack and the fifth time my divisions get shredded but with luck we achieved at least a 1:1 today which knocked down a fort level. But for the fifth time my combat engineers were totally useless. I´m rotating combat eng in and out all the time and I have no clue why they can´t achieve something here at this base. But the Chinese supply level seems to cause trouble for the defender. But the Chinese are still able to inflict a huge casualty rate with their bajonette attacks...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/27/42

Miller proved to be extremely lucky this turn again IMO. While he has been flying constant air attacks against Dili day after day after day... he stopped TODAY!!!!! Why? Heck, because I have set 440 fighters to LRCAP the damned base to intercept the enemy. What flew in? Only a couple of Catalinas to do recon over the base and to show Miller that there are 100+ Japanese fighters over Dili! Wonderful, it really seems to me that Miller has psychich abilities...[:(]

the enemy´s bombardments are more a threat than the deliberate attacks. The bombardments have worn down two of my divisions. They are completely shredded! There´s not a single gun combat ready anymore, only inf and support squads, everything else is disabled and both divisions are down to 50-60/95. Which means both divs are wrecked and not combat worthy anymore! Great. What´s even a bigger shock is the fact that both divisions stay at 80% disruption and this is something I´ve never seen before! The 5 art units cause two of my divisions to fight at only 20% of their remaining strenght and that´s more than depressing, as more than a dozen of my art units in China achieve nothing. But the Allied are bogged down here and if Miller isn´t doing the right things, then I will kill those 5 or 6 Allied divisions on Timor together with the art units and the base forces...
